RBG – Film
Oct 28 all-day
Online

The Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning documentary RBG, directed by award-winning filmmakers Betsy West and Julie Cohen, chronicles the inspiring and personal story of Ginsburg’s rise to the nation’s highest court while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. “From her Supreme Court chambers to her exercise room, what a privilege and a joy it was for us to train our cameras on RBG, and capture the story of this feisty, determined, brilliant woman who used her talents to make our world a better place,” said West and Cohen.

“What makes it memorable is its portrait of a woman with an exceptional intellect, to be sure, but also a lifelong capacity for staggering amounts of minutely detailed, unswervingly purposeful work.” – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

“The movie’s touch is light and its spirit buoyant, but there is no mistaking its seriousness or its passion. Those qualities resonate powerfully in the dissents that may prove to be Justice Ginsburg’s most enduring legacy, and RBG is, above all, a tribute to her voice.” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times

In addition to owning the film, you’ll also have access to a long-form Q&A with the directors from earlier this summer.

WINNER of the Warsaw Phoenix for the best documentary film from the Warsaw Jewish Motifs Film Festival, 2018

Thousands of Jewish women were brought to Argentinian brothels from Eastern Europe in the early 20th century. Their pimps, also Jewish, were regarded as “impure” by the “normative” Jewish community. So were the unfortunate women. Through his own family story, the director unveils the complex relationship between the women trafficking organizations and the rest of the Jewish community which was deeply ashamed by their co-religionists activities while enjoying their economic riches.

Watch + Discuss: Guardians of Our Trouble Waters
Dec 3 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Zoom Webinar

Join us Thursday, December 3 for this virtual film screening event!

Award-winning film director David Weintraub has been an oral historian and filmmaker for over 20 years. His films have appeared on PBS stations around the country and at film festivals around the world. Weintraub’s latest documentary Guardians of Our Troubled Waters, tells the story of our early communities and their deep connections to their rivers and streams as a source of spiritual sustenance, as their lifeblood, and as a critical component of their livelihood; how that changed during the industrial era when paper mills, tanneries, and other manufacturing plants turned clean, protected water into moving cesspools; and the heroes who rose to challenge the destruction. So much of our environmental consciousness and economic vitality sprung from the champions of our waterways of the past. So much of our future depends upon our ability to continue their legacy today.

Guardians focuses on three communities — Western North Carolina, East Tennessee, and South Florida, the stewardship efforts that grew to protect the French Broad River, the Pigeon River, and the Everglades, and the lessons learned for today’s world.

The Details
Location: Zoom webinar – a link will be sent to all registered participants in advance of the event
Time: The documentary screening will begin at 5:30pm and the film runs approximately 77 minutes. Afterward, the director will answer audience questions.

This event is brought to you by the Western North Carolina Historical Association and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville.
