Women workers make up an overwhelming portion of the low-wage workforce and are the fastest growing group of those who are homeless. The lack of access to affordable housing forces many women to choose between domestic abuse and homelessness.
Housing inequalities have historically served not only to exploit the working class for profit but also to control the social status of women. The creation of private property coincided with the notion of women as property. Working-class women, especially women of color, are at the center of the housing struggle because they have fewer political rights and face greater economic insecurity (women are still 35 percent more likely than men to be low-income workers).
Join us on International Working Women’s Day (March 8th) for a forum on housing as a women’s issue. We will be gathering at 6 pm at Liberation Station (10 N Market Street).

$10 Advance / $10 Day of Show
Known best as one of the singing and songwriting voices of the band Twisted Pine, Rachel Sumner is touring in support of her solo debut, Anything Worth Doing, which explores her eclectic musical interests, from country to lush indie-folk. This solo performance will highlight her songs in their purest form.
Hailed as “the songwriter’s songwriter” by the Newport Folk Festival, Ian Fitzgerald has been crossing the country for several years singing what he’s written. Following the release of his album, You Won’t Even Know I’m Gone, and the full-band tours that followed, Ian has refocused on his solo performances, allowing him to create something more dynamically intimate with guitar and voice alone. This show will feature solo performances by Ian and Rachel Sumner as well as a special set of duets

Join us in the tasting room to celebrate the debut of Kiyoshi, our premium limited release sake featuring White Labs Kitchen & Tap yeast. We’ll have live music by Savannah Smith, tastings, food pairings, and giveaways from both White Labs and Ben’s.
More about the sake:
Kiyoshi is a Junmai Daiginjo, a traditional sake classification that highlights both the purity and high quality of the ingredients used. Junmai sake is brewed with only 4 ingredients- rice, water, yeast, and koji. Daiginjo refers to the quality of the rice, specifically that it has been milled to at least 50%. The higher the milling percentage, the more proteins and fats have been removed, leaving pure starch for the brewing process. Daiginjo style sake is light in color and delicate in flavor and aroma.

Stand-up Comedians + Scientists + You =
Stand Up Science
W special guests Ross Yates of New Belgium, Comedian Dave Waite and Aimee Tomcho of the National Audubon Society
Award-winning stand-up comedian and science podcast host Shane Mauss presents Stand Up Science!
Learn and laugh as local scientists, comedians and other special guests join Shane to bring you a one-of-a-kind show that is equal parts ahas and hahas
Stand-up comedy and science have a lot in common. They both reveal truth, change our perceptions, and challenge the status quo. So why are they so underappreciated? Admittedly, comedy sometimes underestimates the intelligence of their audience, catering to the lowest common denominator. And science has the stigma of being overly complicated, unrelatable or boring. Until now.
Funnier and more provocative than TED Talks, while smarter than traditional stand-up comedy, Stand Up Science combines the best of both worlds. This thought-provoking night of laughs will leave you a little smarter, a little happier and send you home with plenty of fuel for your own conversations.
What to Expect:
As your host, Shane kicks the evening off with some of his best material on brainy topics, before introducing special guest speakers and performers. Guests range from Ivy League professors presenting groundbreaking academic research to local stand-up comedians delivering their most cerebral material.
At the end of the night, Shane brings all the guests back onstage and opens the floor for a Q&A and interactive discussion with the audience.
Stand Up Science will blow your mind and bust your gut, but don’t worry… there is a doctorate in the house.
About the host and origins of Stand-Up Science:
Shane Mauss leads two lives.
In one life, he tours full-time as a stand-up comedian. Shane has brought his unique blend of absurdist humor, thoughtful insights and storytelling to cities all over the world, as well as TV spots on Conan, Kimmel, Comedy Central, Showtime, BBC, Epix and more.
In his other life as the host of the podcast Here We Are, he’s interviewed over 200 of the world’s leading academic experts about our most fascinating traits and behaviors while finding the funny in the innermost workings of life. Each week Shane illuminates a new area of research for the show’s 50,000 loyal listeners, earning a 5-star rating on iTunes.
Shane’s unique background, comedy, and personal philosophies have also made him a popular guest on other top podcasts like Pete Holmes’ You Made It Weird, Marc Maron’s WTF, The Joe Rogan Experience, Duncan Trussell’s Family Hour, Bertcast and more.
Guests
Ross Yates
While pursuing a studio arts degree at the University of Minnesota Ross Yates began home brewing with his dirt-bag roommates because he was too young to buy beer. A love of bicycles, death metal, and yoga drew Ross to Oakland, California where his backyard brewing buddies had laboratory access at Cal Berkeley. Now a resident of Asheville, North Carolina, Ross shares the art, science, and history of fermentation with the drinking public as an employee-owner & tour guide at New Belgium Brewing.
Aimee Tomcho
Aimee Tomcho is a Conservation Biologist with the National Audubon Society. From woodpeckers to warblers, Aimee has studied ornithology for more than 20 years. She earned degrees from Virginia Tech and Clemson University. While most of her work now focuses on practical application of the science, her research has included studying the effects of forest fuel reduction for a national fire ecology collaborative and seasonally tracking bird migration to help develop international foundational knowledge.
DAVE WAITE
Los Angeles based comedian Dave Waite is a charismatic oddball. He’s been seen on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Comedy Central, and Last Comic Standing. He’s also been a beloved guest on some of the top podcasts including Doug Loves Movies and the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show. He can also be heard frequently on SiriusXM and Pandora.

Bayou Diesel has been traveling the obscure gig-highways of Western North Carolina since 2005. The band has always focused on performing the powerful Cajun, Zydeco and Mardi Gras style dance music of Louisiana. Featuring the accordion, rubboard, rhythm section and occasional French lyrics, Bayou Diesel has cooked up some tasty jam-balaya. In 2008, the Asheville Zydeco Dance Krewe challenged the band to play some authentic sounding Zydeco grooves for their monthly dances. A list of favorite tunes was provided and suddenly, those 10-forward-gears lurched into overdrive. With the addition of the 1 and 3-row button-accordions and a dedicated 5 man roster, the band has stirred the roux on the Rue de Zydeco. Bayou Diesel’s mission is to embody the Zydeco “joi de vivre” of high-energy community-friendly dance music that all-ages can enjoy anywhere. In the spirit of Mardi-Gras, the Purple, Gold and ‘Green’ powered Bayou Diesel easily navigates the good-time mountain-bayou experience. Let the Good Times Roll!
