This is a ticketed event with limited space available. Please pre-purchase tickets to reserve your space. We are thrilled to have Chef Johnny Curiel join us for an evening. He invites you to taste truly high end Mexican Cuisine.
This is his bio: I come from a proud family of chefs—my mom, dad, and sister are all executive chefs! From a young age, I knew that I would become a chef too, and I got my start at 14 washing dishes in my dad’s kitchen. At 18, I decided to travel across Mexico and learn as much as I could about the cooking traditions of each state. In three years I visited almost all of them, learning from everyone I could—from famous chefs in bustling restaurants to abuelas in their home kitchens. At 21, I joined Richard Sandoval’s team, cooking at restaurants and competitions across the USA and Mexico—DC, New York, Los Angeles, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, and Aspen—and then joined Troy Guard in Denver, working the Kitchens of Guard + Grace, Los Chingones, and Mr. Tuna. In 2017, I joined Big Red F family at Centro Mexican Kitchen in Boulder, CO as the Executive Chef. My goal is to introduce people to the many wonderful flavors of Mexico, and in that way share my culture with them. I love seeing the look on their faces when they taste something for the first time, or when a flavor brings them back to a place they’ve loved.

FUN FOR THE FAMILY!
Join us for a special benefit concert showcasing the various groups of students in Sue Ford’s Village Marimba School programs -both youth and adult- as they perform songs they have been learning, while giving back to the culture whose music has inspired and informed them. Suggested donation $5-$20 per person, collected at the door.
Proceeds from the concert will directly benefit Zimbabwean musician and teacher Barnabas Ngalande, who was one of Sue’s teachers, and provide funds to help pay the tuition for his gifted student, Spiwe Fulutuna of Zimbabwe, to continue her education at a high school that teaches music.
Barnabas Ngalande is a traditional native Zimbabwean musician and teacher, specializing in the mbira. He teaches in community schools in Zimbabwe and has been to the US a number of times as a guest teacher. Through his work in the schools, he has become the educational sponsor of three orphaned girls who play in his ensemble “Mbirauture” and he ensures they are able to continue their education, especially in music. The students in his ensemble travel throughout Zimbabwe to perform and compete, opening them up to opportunities that would not otherwise be within their reach.
An important component of Sue Ford’s music programs is fostering an appreciation for diverse styles of music from around the world coupled by an attitude of gratitude in action, that gives back to those sources of newly found inspiration. Music is a universal language. As global citizens, it is important that we remember to bring respect and kindness to the conversation. This benefit concert is an opportunity to exercise that principle.
Guest artists will include River Guerguerian and members of the Asheville Rhythm Ensemble on an array of world percussion instruments.

Evan Goldman is plucked from his fast-paced, preteen New York City life and plopped into a sleepy Indiana town following his parents divorce. Surrounded by an array of simpleminded middle school students, he needs to establish his place in the popularity pecking order. Can he situate himself on a comfortable link of the food chain… or will he dangle at the end with the outcasts?!?

Pam Stone co-starred in the television series Coach for seven seasons as the character, Judy Watkins. She also appeared in the sit-com, “The Drew Carey Show”, the Rob Reiner political documentary, “But Seriously, Folks,” and the George Lucas 1994 film “Radioland Murders,” starring Mary Stuart Masterson and Brian Benben.
Nelson specializes in rubber-faced comedy characters, much as Red Skelton did in his heyday. His most popular originals include Jiffy Jeff, a punch drunk prizefighter with a Gym in NYC; Eppy Epperman, a brilliant but nerdy kid with deeper insights than meet the eye; an entire football team of stereotypical characters and unnamed football stars doing a charity commercial; Wilby Stuckerson, a hillbilly chicken farmer based on a life experience of Nelson’s from Shreveport, Louisiana, and Mr. Pingyeh, an argumentative Asian man who is more eloquent than the people with whom he argues. He is also known for his Jacques-Yves Cousteau impersonations and his “football act” in which he parodies the old team rundowns in the College Football All-Star games, in which players announce their names, numbers and teams (example: “Quasimodo… Notre Dame… halfback!”)
Nelson was Rodney Dangerfield’s opening act for eight years and was featured in two of Rodney’s HBO stand-up comedy showcases, alongside Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne Barr, Rita Rudner and Bob Saget. That led to two HBO specials starring Nelson, including “Nelson Schmelson”.[1] He considers Rodney his ‘Comedy Godfather’. Nelson was also in a comedy group called “The Identical Triplets” with Eddie Murphy and Rob Bartlett.

Award winning New York City director and actor Reginald Wilson will be the guest director of “Dearly Departed,” the next play presented by Mars Hill University’s theatre arts department. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, November 15-17, 2018, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, November 18. The production will feature director talkbacks after each performance; an opening night reception before the production on Thursday, November 15; and a diversity improv workshop at 12 p.m. on Sunday, November 18. Extra events are included with ticket purchases for that day’s performance.
Dearly Departed, written by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones, is a fast moving play that takes place in the backwoods of the Bible Belt. The beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpins’ other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students with student identification, free for Mars Hill University students and staff. For more information, contact the Owen Theatre box office at (828) 689-1389.

“Metamorphoses” condenses Ovid’s epic and selects the most powerful myths to illustrate the theme of change. The gods, though “not altogether unkind,” exert their influence on the mortal world by dramatically interfering with the lives of humans.
From Midas to Orpheus, and from Alcyone to Baucis, mortals undergo various metamorphoses, or physical changes, which reflect their internal traits. Hubris is punished, while charity and love are rewarded. To stress the timeless nature of these myths, some take place in antiquity, while others have anachronistic references to better tie their stories to today. These myths, however, offer more than just simple morals like the importance of humility and piety. “Metamorphoses” also shows why myths themselves retain importance and relevance.

The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band
Charismatic roots preacher Reverend Peyton breaks it down on his career defining release The Front Porch Sessions. Record debuted at #1 on the iTunes Blues chart.
Southern Indiana-bred singer-guitarist Reverend Peyton is the bigger-than-life frontman of Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. He has earned a reputation as both a singularly compelling performer and a persuasive evangelist for the rootsy country blues styles that captured his imagination early in life and inspired him and his band to make pilgrimages to Clarksdale, Mississippi to study under such blues masters as T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour and David “Honeyboy” Edwards.
That passionate inspiration has made Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band America’s foremost country blues outfit and fuels the Rev’s new release, The Front Porch Sessions. Throughout the album, his dazzling guitar mastery is equaled by his knack for vivid, emotionally impactful songwriting, and his originals are matched in their authenticity by the deeply felt vintage blues tunes that he covers. The resulting album showcases the Rev’s irrepressible personality while echoing the enduring spirit of such acoustic blues icons as Charlie Patton, Blind Willie Johnson, Bukka White and Furry Lewis, whose “When My Baby Left Me” receives a memorable reading here.
“It started as a literal whim on my part, but it turned into something really special,” Reverend Peyton says of The Front Porch Sessions. ” I wanted it to feel like you’re on my front porch. You can almost hear the wood creaking.”
The Front Porch Sessions maintains a potent level of intensity throughout, from the upbeat optimism of the album-opener “We Deserve A Happy Ending” to the blunt slice-of-life rural reality of “One More Thing” to the rollicking, playful swagger of “Shakey Shirley,” “One Bad Shoe” and “Cornbread and Butterbeans.” Meanwhile, the instrumentals “It’s All Night Long” and “Flying Squirrels” demonstrate the Rev’s nimble, imaginative guitar work.
“I didn’t have much planned when I went into the studio,” the Reverend notes. ” went into the studio with some new songs and some old songs that I’ve always wanted to try. At first, I thought ‘Well, maybe we’ll make it a download or release a single.’ But it took on a life of its own, and when it was all said and done, I was as proud of it as anything I’ve ever done. To me, it was a lesson in not overthinking things; I just went in and let my gut guide me.
“We recorded this album at a studio called Farm Fresh, which is right down the street from my house,” he continues. “It’s in the shade of the oldest poplar tree in Indiana, and there’s a graveyard next to it and train tracks run across there. In fact, I think you can hear the train on one track on this record. The studio’s in an old church, and the main sanctuary is the tracking room, so the haunting reverb that you hear is that room.
” We used a lot of vintage gear in the recording. I love that organic sound, and I’m always chasing that in everything I do. I just like things that feel timeless. Feeling timeless to me is way more important than feeling old. When you try to make something sound old, you’re trying too hard.’
That lifelong pursuit of musical authenticity was instilled in Josh Peyton’s musical consciousness while growing up in rural Indiana, where his early love for blues, ragtime, folk, country and other traditional styles gave him a sense of direction that would soon manifest itself in his own music. He and the Big Damn Band won a large and loyal fan base, thanks to their tireless touring efforts and high-energy showmanship, along with such acclaimed albums as Big Damn Nation, The Gospel Album, The Whole Fam Damnily, The Wages, Between the Ditches, So Delicious and the Charlie Patton tribute disc Peyton on Patton.
Despite his prior achievements, the Rev views The Front Porch Sessions as a personal creative milestone.
“This record’s very personal for me, because so much of it is just me,” he says. “The Big Damn Band is on there, but it’s mostly me. There’s washboard only in a couple of songs, and the drum kit is a suitcase drum set that we put together in the studio. It’s a snapshot of the week we spent in the studio, but it also represents a lifetime of me building up to it. “
The Front Porch Sessions has also spawned a series of audio-verite companion videos, many of them shot on the Rev’s actual front porch, that embody the album’s intimacy and immediacy. “A lot of these songs started on the porch, and that’s what the videos are,” he says. “I’d be pickin’ and go ‘I like the way this sounds, let me get my camera.'”
Reverend Peyton has already begun to integrate The Front Porch Sessions’ spare approach into the Big Damn Band’s expansive live shows, which are renowned for their intensity and abandon.
“In a lot of our shows in the past few years, we’ll take a break and I’ll come out and do a song or two by myself,” he explains. “That brings things down and allows me to do some songs like this. We’re definitely gonna be doing more of that, so there’s definitely gonna be moments in the shows where you’re gonna hear a lot of these songs. We may also do some Front Porch Sessions shows, and maybe present some of our other songs in a more stripped-down way. We did one earlier this year as kind of a test, and that worked really well.
“Over the years, our shows have gotten more dynamic,” he continues. “The ups are more up and the downs are more down. That’s something that’s important to me. If I go and see a show and someone’s just standing there and staring at their feet and singing their songs, I feel insulted. That’s not a performance. I want to know that you’re living that song, not just regurgitating it. I don’t think artists should seem like they’re too cool for their audience.”
The Rev’s dedication to delivering the goods on stage is reflected in his flamboyant performance persona. “The Rev is me,” he states. “Sometimes that freaks people out, because the person who’s on stage is exactly the way I am offstage. I don’t know how to separate myself from my music, because it’s so personal to me. My mom calls me Rev; it’s been my nickname since I was a teenager. It was a name that was given to me by some friends, and it sort of stuck.
“I’m one of those people who feels everything really hard, for better or worse,” he continues. “If I’m angry, I’m really angry. If I’m sad, I’m really sad. If I’m happy, I’m really happy. So onstage, I tap into that. There are certain songs that I can’t play on some nights, because they’re just too sad. That may be the rantings of a crazy person, but it’s the God’s honest truth.”
With The Front Porch Sessions showcasing his expanded musical palette, Reverend Peyton is excited about bringing his new music to his fans.
“I really think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done,” he asserts. “I’m interested in making hand-made American music, and the goal is to be timeless.”

Josh Card
Josh Card was raised in a small “one stoplight” town in Northeast Florida, where everybody knows your name, the County Fair is the best time of year, and simpler ways of living still exist. His small town beginnings and humble Southern upbringing landed him at age 13 holding a guitar that his Grandmother bought him, sitting on the porch of the house his Grandfather built, at the end of a dirt road, trying to play along with her Conway Twitty albums. The rebellion stage soon followed, and driven by teen angst and a thirst for loud music, Josh spent the next 15 years playing in several successful punk and hardcore acts, touring internationally and releasing several albums.
Now, residing in the hills of Kentucky, Josh has reunited with his roots to play the music that he has carried with him throughout the years. The songs he’s been writing and storing are finally being heard. Josh went into the studio in November of 2016 and recorded his first Country album. Pulling elements and influence from his Honky-Tonk and Outlaw heroes, Josh made an album that provides to his listeners what modern day Country music lacks: authenticity, honesty, substance, and soul. In early 2017, Josh released his debut full length album titled “Josh Card and The Restless Souls”. Building steam with his passionate and captivating live performances, the album paved the beginning of his career in Country music.
Soon after, he joined the road with Whitey Morgan as a member of the 78’s, playing Honky Tonk across America. In April 2018, Josh began tracking his second album at OmniSound Studios in Nashville, TN. He has set out to make a record that he says will be a “straight forward, from the heart, honest Country record” that is sure to be a game changer in today’s world of watered down, pop induced “Country” music. “These songs come from my deepest, and sometimes, darkest places. I write about what I’ve lived. The heartache, the love, the highest highs and lowest lows.”
Josh’s sophomore album is due Fall of 2018 and in the meantime, he and his band are tearing up the highways, bringing his brand of twangy, roots-filled music to a town near you.
