The Magnetic Theatre invites you on a trip back in time, as we present the wonderfully wicked 25th ANNUAL BERNSTEIN FAMILY CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR. Now in its 9th year, this R-rated holiday spectacle is a hilarious, envelope-pushing ode to the TV specials of yesteryear, with the dysfunctional Bernstein clan doing a variety of skits, as they pay a twisted kind of homage to beloved Christmas traditions. This show is absolutely for adults only, and only for those who are willing to go along for a ride with some delightfully depraved individuals!

A GREAT WAY TO KICK OFF THE HOLIDAY SEASON!
Expect the brilliantly unexpected from Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre’s ninth annual performance of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. ACDT shocked and surprised audiences last year with their original version of The Nutcracker. Though The Nutcracker might be the world’s most famous ballet, if it is being performed by ACDT you can guarantee it is something you haven’t seen before. Their version couldn’t be farther from Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet. It is based on the original and much darker story written in 1816 by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann.
“I always want to go back to the original work” artistic co- director Collard says. “The characters and the story are always so much more interesting.” Take for example the King and Queen of Sausages who surprised and delighted last year’s audience with delightful humor and the party guests wrapped in gorgeous costumes dancing a wild and wonderful polka. And then there is the famous Mouse King and his lovely wife and their numerous children creating havoc all over the ballet with magical aerialists flying over head creating a surrealism to visually delight all ages.
This year’s performance features the ACDT adult company, White Dog ProjectX International, and the students of New Studio of Dance. With typical ACDT flair, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King will again prove to be a wonderful Christmas story full of adventure, courage and loyalty where love comes alive in a spectacular modern dance experience.
Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre (ACDT) is a non-profit professional dance company created in 1979. As western North Carolina’s first professional modern dance company, they believe that everything everywhere is dance and everyone is a dancer. ACDT is devoted to local and international work, forging collaborations and partnerships between Asheville artists and dance artists from around the world.

Kansas returns to the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium on Friday, November 30th at 8pm for their Point of Know Return Tour. With a legendary career spanning more than four decades, KANSAS has firmly established itself as one of America’s iconic classic rock bands. This “garage band” from Topeka released their debut album in 1974 after being discovered by Wally Gold, who worked for Don Kirshner, and have gone on to sell more than 30 million albums worldwide.
Composing a catalogue that includes fifteen studio albums and five live albums, KANSAS has produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-Platinum albums (Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Best of KANSAS), one platinum live album (Two for the Show), and two one million-selling gold singles, ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ and ‘Dust in the
Wind.’ KANSAS appeared on the Billboard charts for over 200 weeks throughout the ‘70’s and ‘80’s and played to sold-out arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe and Japan. ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ continues to be one of the top five most played songs on classic rock radio, and ‘Dust In the Wind’ has been played on the radio more than three million times!
2016 marked the release of “The Prelude Implicit,” KANSAS’s fifteenth studio album. The wide-ranging progressive rock album was released on InsideOut Music, and marked the band’s first studio album release in 16 years. Throughout 2016-2017, the band has celebrated both the release of “The Prelude Implicit” and the anniversary of breakout album “Leftoverture” with the highly successful KANSAS: Leftoverture 40th Anniversary Tour. This tour is being released in 2017 as a live album, “Leftoverture Live & Beyond.”
The band, which is currently comprised of original drummer Phil Ehart, bassist/vocalist Billy Greer, keyboardist David Manion, vocalist/keyboardist Ronnie Platt, violinist/guitarist David Ragsdale, guitarist Zak Rizvi, and original guitarist Richard Williams. KANSAS continues to perform in front of large and enthusiastic audiences
around the world.
Along with constant touring, KANSAS continues to remain a fixture of Classic Rock radio. The band has reached a whole new audience through their unmistakable presence on the popular video games Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and through their songs’ inclusion in various television shows such as ‘Supernatural,’ and ‘South Park,’ and with films ‘Old School,’ and ‘Anchorman.’

Shueh-li Ong
Shueh-li Ong is a Nashville-based songwriter, composer, producer, synthesist, and world-renown thereminist. Her music bears elements of her Australian-Singaporean heritage, and training in classical and electronic music.
Shueh-li has been crowned “Queen” of the theremin in the Music City, and “Diva” by Singaporean media.
Though flattered, she’s simply eager to compose new material for the instrument played without touching. ThereminVox Italy said, “Shueh-li’s an inspired artist with a solid background who has brought fresh ideas into the theremin field.”
For her east coast gigs, Shueh-li is unveiling a multi-movement piece written for her Moog customized Etherwave, extended synth techniques and the tin whistle, produced to address her favorite genres to play.
This means that motifs and themes will warp and weft through fusion, prog-rock, electronica, and esoteric soundscapes to tell a story.
Shueh-li has released 4 albums to date, showing off her production talents. UsaProgMusic said of her 3rd album, “New, original and engaging sounds are abundant throughout this wonderfully crafted album.”
Her theremin playing also appears on an indie sci-fi film, a contemporary classical work, and albums by several prog-rock artists.
Those familiar with her musical offerings can look forward to a show that will be clever and entertaining.
Artists who have worked with Shueh-li include: Chris Currell (MJ’s BAD tour/album), Dean Parks (Steely Dan), Curtis Randall (LeAnne Rimes), Tom Brislin (Meat Loaf), Beegie Adair (Steinway Jazz artist), and Eric Struthers (Aaron Neville Quartet).

TOWN MOUNTAIN
Raw, soulful, and with plenty of swagger, Town Mountain has earned raves for their hard-driving sound, their in-house songwriting and the honky-tonk edge that permeates their exhilarating live performances, whether in a packed club or at a sold-out festival. The hearty base of Town Mountain’s music is the first and second generation of bluegrass spiced with country, old school rock ‘n’ roll, and boogie-woogie. It’s what else goes into the mix that brings it all to life both on stage and on record and reflects the group’s wide-ranging influences – from the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia and the ethereal lyrics of Robert Hunter, to the honest, vintage country of Willie, Waylon, and Merle. The Bend Bulletin’s Brian McElhiney says Town Mountain, “has serious country and rock ’n’ roll DNA.” Town Mountain features guitarist and vocalist Robert Greer, banjoist Jesse Langlais, mandolinist Phil Barker, fiddler Bobby Britt, and Zach Smith on bass.
Town Mountain just finished recording their 6th studio album at Echo Mountain Studios with roots music hero Caleb Klauder producing. Slated to release October 26th, the album is full of new material and features several guest artists including Tyler Childers who co-wrote one of the songs, Miles Miller (Sturgill Simpson, drummer), and other friends. Their most recent album, Southern Crescent (April 1, 2016) debuted at #4 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart while staying for ten weeks on the Americana Music Association’s radio chart Top 40, and widely considered one of the best bluegrass albums of that year.
TELLICO
With vivid, original storytelling, vibrant musicianship and intelligent arrangements, Asheville, NC band Tellico creates an innovative sound that redefines what today’s Southern Appalachian music can be. Instead of modernizing tradition, Tellico takes it deeper, effortlessly weaving meaningful, imaginative songwriting with intelligent arrangements. There is no gimmick here, and yet, there is nothing tired or cliche. Tellico explores the beauty of songcraft through the lens of tradition and an unmistakable sound.
At its core is the voice and guitar of Anya Hinkle. Her sound is rooted in the mountains of her home in southwestern Virginia, but seasoned by travels across the world and back. With arresting honesty, her singing and songwriting comes from the heart. The foil to Hinkle’s heartfelt singing and songwriting, can be found in fellow songwriter, vocalist, bass and harmonica player, Greg “Stig” Stiglets. Inspired from the stories and events of daily life, his attention to melody and groove help to further showcase the instrumental prowess of the band.
Both Aaron Ballance (dobro, lap steel, pedal steel) and Jed Willis (mandolin, clawhammer banjo, electric guitar) hail from central North Carolina. The state itself provides its own conservatory for study, and its students learn from first generation roots music pioneers as well as serious students of the genre in the classrooms of jams, bands, and festivals. Obsessed with playing music going back to their teen years, Ballance and Willis are veteran players.
These four musicians deepen their awareness each year of the synergy among them while eyeing terrain that is yet uncovered. From their converged paths emerges a sound that has jelled over more than a decade of collaboration. Their freshman effort Relics and Roses was well-received, gathering accolades from tastemakers and earning them stage appearances at the country’s most prestigious festivals (MerleFest, Bristol Rhythm & Roots, Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival, Official Showcase Artist and World of Bluegrass-IBMA).
