PEANUTS™ The Great Pumpkin Patch Express returns to the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad for 2018! The excursions, which are themed after Charles M. Schulz’s classic story “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” will be departing from the Bryson City Depot in October of 2018!
The Southeast Wise Women Herbal Conference, October 12-14, is a weekend for women to learn, celebrate and connect. For one weekend in autumn, we share inspiration, celebration and practical learning about earth-based healing and women’s health. Surrounded by the ancient Blue Ridge Mountains, our venue at Kanuga Lake offers a serene backdrop for over 60 workshops and classes in herbalism, nutrition, personal growth and natural healing. Our featured speakers include Rosemary Gladstar, Ubaka Hill, EagleSong-Gardner, Deena Hayes-Green and many more!
25 years ago, Flat Rock Playhouse debuted an exciting new program, Project Playhouse, with specially priced matinees for local students as well as regular evening performances for our patrons. The play was Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, a drama of great tenderness, charm and beauty and one of the most famous plays of the modern theatre.

2nd Annual Billy Goats Gruff Mountain Races at Wolf Ridge Ski Resort.
10k will start first and reach the summit for sunrise. After the last finisher, we’ll take a break and get ready for the Hill Climb. Again, we’ll take a break to allow everyone to get back down and thenm do the 5k. DO ALL THREE or one or two of the races. 750′ of gain in one mile. 1500′ of change in a 1.5 mile loop. This race is NO JOKE!
There will be a FREE 1k Kids race as well.

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

Join us for 25, 40 and 63 miles routes at the 5th annual White Squirrel Cycling Classic! The White Squirrel Cycling Classic is a classic fall spinner during fabulous fall leaf season. Starting and ending at the Tasty Weasel tasting room at Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard NC! Riders will head out on flat valley roads near the base of Pisgah National Forest. They’ll meander along the French Broad River before heading into Henderson County and then back to Oskar Blues. These routes will lead riders on a fully guided and supported tour of some Transylvania County’s finest roads! Fully supported rest stops with medical assistance available and SAG wagons.

Marion – Where Main Street Meets the Mountains
Marion, North Carolina celebrates the arrival of autumn in the Blue Ridge during their annual Mountain Glory Festival. For 35 years, beautiful downtown Marion has hosted this popular celebration on the 2nd Saturday in October. This year, make plans to visit on October 13th between 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
Celebrate small-town life in the mountains. Visitors looking for original handicrafts will find plenty of choices shopping with three jam packed blocks, featuring 150 craft, food, non-profit and sponsor booths of locally made arts and crafts; festival foods and local wines and beers. Plus, two stages presenting Marion’s finest musicians.
Don’t miss the annual Mountain Glory Quilt Show inside the McDowell Arts Council. The quilt show is the gallery’s featured, October exhibit. The kids will have fun in the “Children’s Arena” with hands-on activities, local entertainment and the ever popular best-dressed pet contest.

Asheville Outlets (www.ShopAshevilleOutlets.com) is pleased to host the 19th Annual Autumn in the Mountains Car Show Saturday, October 13, 2018. The show will open at 9:00 a.m. with Best-of-Class awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m. Past shows have attracted over 120 cars and motorcycles. Admission is free and open to the public.
Autumn in the Mountains Car Show is an annual charitable event which is open to any and all British and European cars and motorcycles. For this year’s event, the designated charity is ‘Meals on Wheels’ of both Buncombe and Henderson Counties.
These programs are a great way to learn simple and effective techniques to teach your clients to improve their skills in dealing with resiliency and trauma. The exercises we teach you will enable your clients to strongly increase their self-regulation skills.

October means fall cleaning and that includes FernLeaf. It’s time to spruce up the school campus with some maintenance and improvement projects!
This is a great way to get in some volunteer hours, get to know other FernLeaf families, and share in community building with your kids.
Projects likely will include painting, weeding, spreading mulch, sanding wood, chicken coop needs, trail maintenance and outside standing-table construction.
Come for an hour, work for a few hours, or stay for the whole day. Just know we need and appreciate your help!
Can’t make the work day? You can still pitch in. You can donate supplies and tools for the day (please see the list and drop them off by Thursday, October 11).

Join the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and Highland Brewing Company for a moderately difficult hike to enjoy views of Thunderstruck Ridge, for which Highland’s latest seasonal is named. Participants will travel over 5 miles of rugged terrain, through red spruce and fraser firs, red oak forest, and other high elevation trees while occasionally stopping at rock outcroppings for views of Thunderstruck Ridge.
The group will hike through the 1,595-acre Plott Balsam Preserve and eventually reach Blackrock Mountain, which SAHC protected in 2013, at a towering 5,600 feet of elevation. This beautiful section of mountains can be seen from the Blue Ridge Parkway. SAHC’s conservation work in this area protects high elevation habitat and pristine headwater streams. So come out and let’s celebrate Thunderstruck Coffee Porter and land conservation together. This hike is FREE for everyone!
Following the hike, we will meet for a Thunderstruck pint at Highland Brewing Company!

Richmond Hill is Asheville’s only forested park, however, several acres of this unique urban ecosystem are overrun by non-native invasive plants. These invasives pose a threat to our native plant species by crowding out their habitat. Many of these species have the ability to grow at an alarming rate and, if left unchecked, could overgrow the walking and biking paths in Richmond Hill Park. Please join us as we take Richmond Hill Park back and restore native plants, making it a safer and more beautiful place to walk and bike! Be sure to wear long sleeves and pants as well as closed-toe shoes to this event. We will provide all other equipment necessary!
