2019 Summerfest

Clarion Inn Asheville Airport

Crop-Paper-Scissors is once again hosting our Summerfest next year at the Clarion Inn Asheville Airport. The fee will be $160.00, which will give you a six-foot table to yourself, breakfast each morning, a welcome bag, giveaways throughout the retreat, and vendors. We are offering an early bird check-in for Thursday from 8:00 P.M. to 10:00 PM so that you can set up your area to be ready to go first thing in the morning. The fee for this is an additional $25.00 . If you want to make it a girls’ weekend, the Clarion is offering us a special rate of $94 a night, which will be for two queen beds if you want to share a room and split the cost. Please contact the hotel directly at (828) 684-1213 and tell them you’re with the Crop-Paper-Scissors group, which includes Thursday night at that rate. The group rate block will only be in effect until May 20th. And, the icing on the cake is that our one and only Tanya and Sara are coming to give us massages for an extra fee. It is well worth every penny. So, get your nonrefundable deposit of $50.00 in to save your space in early or until it’s a sell-out, which it always is. Your spot is not reserved until your payment is received. You may send a check to Crop-Paper-Scissors at 154 S. Melissa Way, Hendersonville, NC 28791, or via Paypal using friends and family (so there’s no fee) at [email protected]. There will be a $25.00 late fee charge for any late payments. And while we love our families, you must be at least 16 to attend.
Payment in full is due by May 1, 2019. This retreat will be a sell out so don’t delay in reserving your spot. Spots are limited and there will be no refunds for no-shows. Any vendors who are interested in having a table, please feel free to contact [email protected]. To sign up, please go to our website http://www.crop-paper-scissors.com/ and fill out the registration form. Thanks, Faith and Marilyn

Structural Essentials: Arches and Legs
Jun 7 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Western North Carolina School of Massage

Sponsored by the Western North Carolina School of Massage. For more information and to register, contact Hope DeVall Morgan at 828-761-1553 or [email protected]

The Structural Essential series is a set of intensive soft-tissue technique courses divided into functional regions. Combining movement and manual techniques for the most efficient and long-lasting results, and using the latest research on the interaction between skeleton, muscles, joints, and fascial proprioceptors, this series of workshops will take you to a new level in therapy.

Designed with the busy manual therapist in mind, each Structural Essentials event gives you a new understanding of the relevant area. The content will outline how the structural and functional anatomy relates to many common issues as well as to the rest of the body. Based on many new and established approaches this series will give you the skills in palpation, BodyReading and functional analysis needed for the modern multidisciplinary therapist.

Arches and the Legs – Underpinning all of our structure is the foot’s interaction with the ground, imbalances here clearly have consequences further up the body. Effective arch balance can be essential for easy and graceful walking, pelvic stability, low back efficiency and even head and neck support. The feet and legs are literally the foundation for the rest of our structure and this workshop will analyze the bones of the feet and how they conspire to help or hinder the arches. We will look at the forces coming from the leg muscles and create strategies to help maintain better mechanics by dealing with myofascial restrictions and imbalances.

The Knee and Thigh – A complicated hinge in the middle of two long levers is perhaps not the best of designs – but this “elbow designed by committee” is an excellent work of engineering. The knee joint mediates forces coming down from the hip and up from the foot and still allows a wide range of movement in all but the frontal plane.

Objectives

How to differentiate your analysis of the foot and legs from the rest of the mechanical chain, giving an accurate reading of their skeletal relationships
How to assess and then provide good foot and leg support through the three (or four) arches of the foot
How the arches act in walking and standing and their relationship to the pelvis and the AT lines
How to balance the support the arches receive from the long muscles of the calf
Effective strategies to unwind rotational compensations in the foot, the tibia-fibula complex and the knee.
Learn how the structures of the knee and thigh co-operate to achieve this and learn to recognize some of the structural dysfunctions that can occur.
BodyRead the various imbalances which can occur
Learn to balance the common rotational movements of the knee

Asheville Gallery of Art June Show 2019
Jun 7 @ 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Asheville Gallery of Art

Asheville Gallery of Art
June 2019 Show
“The Wonder of It All”

Asheville Gallery of Art’s June show, “The Wonder of It All,”
features the works of Anne McLaughlin and Sandra Brugh Moore, whose complementary painting styles capture the magic of experiencing the
natural world. The show runs June 1-30 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. A reception for the artists will be June 7, from 5-8 at the gallery, 82 Patton Avenue.

Anne McLaughlin grew up in rural Kentucky where she learned to appreciate the beauty of the world. “I was endlessly fascinated by birds, flowers, and trees.” Though her life-long career was physical therapy, she continued to follow an interest in art and art history that evolved into learning to paint. She took classes at the Atlanta School of Art and also studied privately. Anne would spend time in art museums wherever she traveled.

When Anne and her husband retired to Spring Creek in Madison County, she said the beauty of the area compelled her to try plein air painting. “I work primarily in oil and love capturing what I see when I sit by a stream or am out for a hike. I incorporate figures to tell a story, but leave room for the viewer to imagine their own. I am charmed and fascinated by the wonder of it all and love to share that with others.”

Sandra Brugh Moore believes wonder describes the area where we live. “Being sensitive to the landscape and trying to capture that feeling on paper is my artistic journey. Those special moments in time when the light reveals something extraordinary is why I paint.” Through experimentation, workshops, and studying books about watercolor she ays she has the confidence to put on paper what she sees and feels in nature.

The artist graduated from West Virginia University with a BA in Art Education. Sandra paints with the Asheville Urban Landscape Painters and will be one of the demonstrators this summer. “Painting on location in plein air gives me the grounding I need in my work.” In the past five years, she has been adding pen and ink lines to some of her paintings. “This is a meditative process that takes what is old and turns it into something new; it’s my unique way of recycling.”

For further information about this show, contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.
