South Asheville Turkey Trot wants to thank our incredible volunteers. Without you all, the runners may not have water on the course, there wouldn’t be anyone to direct parking, no one else helping at packet pick up, the course wouldn’t be marked, and no one would be waving their arms, signaling to turn left or right, while cheering you on. Without our exceptional volunteers, there is no exceptional race event for the community. We thank you all!

Whether you have already signed up to volunteer or are interested in more information, we ask that you please join us at Fleet Feet Asheville on Tuesday, November 20th at 6:30pm where we will lay out individual volunteer duties for during Packet Pick-Up and on Race Day.

Celtic Rock Tuesdays!
Nov 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Triskelion Brewing Company

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.

Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.

Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.

So… Tuesdays… will now be…

Peggy Ratusz has been pulling from the cream of the Asheville music crop since moving here in 2002. MATH + BEER at Habitat Brewing
Nov 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Habitat Tavern and Commons

Have you ever felt frustrated, confused, or maybe just downright intrigued by the math work you see your kid doing? If so, join me, The Elementary Math Consultant, for a nerdy evening of fun at Habitat Brewing on November 20 from 7-9pm!

We will…
+ get our hands on all the sweet math tools kids use in elementary school
+ play math games and do math problems
+ learn the importance of the “new” strategies being taught in schools today
+ answer all your questions about Common Core math strategies
+ prepare you to be your kid’s math tutor… think of all the money you’ll save!

Oh yeah… we’ll also drink beer! (If you want to.)

Why am I hosting this?

Many people experience a very real problem called Math Anxiety. It affects lots of parents and teachers, and it has been shown in several studies to be contagious! Walk into almost any classroom, and you’ll immediately be able to notice students with math anxiety.

Parents have great intentions when working with their kids on homework, but they can do more harm than good. Most of us learned math very differently than our kids are learning math today. We were not expected to connect abstract strategies – like “borrowing” in subtraction – to visual or concrete representations of math.

The Common Core standards (and the almost identical NC Standard Course of Study standards) require students to deeply understand math concepts, not just skills. Kids are meant to use reasoning and number sense to figure out problems they haven’t been explicitly shown how to solve. It’s actually pretty awesome!

I would love to show more parents how this works. I want to work with parents who don’t like Common Core math and parents who love it. The more adults in our community who can get together with the end goal of supporting our kids’ math achievement, the better.

Who Am I, Anyway?

By the way, my name is Jeannie Curtis. I have taught grades 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. Most recently I taught 4th grade at Evergreen Community Charter School. I was a Governor’s Teacher Network teacher leader and action researcher for North Carolina in 2014-15 and Teacher of the Year at Evergreen in 2015-2016. Now I am a math specialist and math consultant. I work with teachers and administrators along the East coast to improve math instruction. I work for myself and through an incredible company called Math Solutions.

It is becoming increasingly important to me to improve math instruction right here in the Asheville area. I work with teachers here, and now I’d like to work with parents. Parent support can make all the difference for kids. But for the most part, I find that parents know very little about the Common Core standards and current teaching practices. I’d like to change that!

Oh… I also love beer!

OUR THANKSGIVING WEEK TRADITION! Fill up on laughs before Thanksgiving.

While trying to get home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his wife and kids, his flight is rerouted to a distant city in Kansas because of a freak snowstorm, and his sanity begins to fray. Worse yet, he is forced to bunk up with talkative Del Griffith (John Candy), an extremely annoying shower curtain ring salesman. Together they must overcome the insanity of holiday travel to reach their intended destination.

CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class: Blues w/ Charlie

The music and dance aesthetics of Blues and Lindy share a common heritage as African American artforms which developed from late 1800’s, through the turn of the century, to today. We will be looking at blues in terms of four core concepts: Grounding, Pulse, Polyrhythms, and Lag. We will also talk about the concept of ‘dance idioms,’ specifically the blues idioms of Drag, Struttin, and the Texas Shuffle. Nov 6 — Basics of blues and added vocabulary to build you blues sentences. Nov 13 — Modulation and isolations in blues and an intro to Drag. Nov 20 — Dance control, speeding up, and Struttin’. Nov 27 — The Texas Shuffle and breaking down. This series of lessons will be focused on progressive concepts which will build on one another from week to week. This would be very useful for beginners looking to move up to intermediate or for intermediate dancers to hone their core skills.

“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************

8 pm: Core Class: Beginner Partner Charleston & Jitterbug w/ Sparrow & Jean

This month we will be doing beginner partnered Charleston. Focusing mostly on side-by-side 30s style, we will also add in some jitterbug steps to give your dancing a little more variety and swing. No partner necessary! You’ll get to switch roles and dance with everyone.

“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).
*************************

GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.

The Business Side of an Herbal Practice with Katja and Ryn
Nov 20 @ 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm
American Herbalists Guild

FREE WEBINAR!
Being a professional herbalist is actually several jobs in one: you’re not only a teacher, advisor, and medicine-maker, but you also need business savvy & marketing skills – not to mention the capacity to navigate the laws & regulations around herbal products & practice. This doesn’t have to be intimidating, but you are going to need to get organized! In this class we’ll address:

– The bare necessities: a space to work in, tools & supplies, website, newsletter.
– Marketing: it can actually be fun! How to make the most of your online presence in the age of social media.
– Administrivia: the often-frustrating but important nitty-gritty of small business administration: insurance, taxes, incorporation, GMP, and more.
– Staying on target: it’s all moot if you can’t hold your focus: planning, accountability, and staying grounded.

The world needs more herbalists! It’s terribly sad when a talented herbalist gives up on their dream because the business aspects are too daunting. Let’s work together to make sure that doesn’t happen to you, so you can share your gifts and bring herbs to more people who need them!

THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride
Nov 21 all-day

All Aboard THE POLAR EXPRESS! This memorable journey will take you on an incredible journey! Believe the magic this Holiday season!

Over 88,000 guests rode THE POLAR EXPRESS with the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in 2017 and we hope to see you in 2018! The 1¼ hour round-trip excursion comes to life as the train departs the Bryson City depot for a journey through the quiet wilderness for a special visit at the North Pole. Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, guests on board will enjoy warm cocoa and a treat while listening and reading along with the magical story. Children’s faces show the magic of the season when the train arrives at the North Pole to find Santa Claus waiting. Santa will board THE POLAR EXPRESS, greeting each child and presenting them with a special gift as in the story, their own silver sleigh bell. Christmas carols will be sung as they return back to the Bryson City Depot.

THE POLAR EXPRESS begins November 9, 2018, and operates through December 31, 2018.

Thanksgiving Fast & Prayer to Address Climate Change
Nov 21 @ 7:30 am – 12:00 pm
Vance Monument

A group of concerned citizens will be publicly fasting and praying for ten days prior to Thanksgiving to focus attention on the issue of climate change. The fast and prayer will run from 7.30am Monday November 12 to 1pm Wednesday November 21st, 2018, the day before Thanksgiving.

Fasters will be in front of the Court House on Collage Street from 7.30am to 8.30am then at the Vance Monument from 8.30am until 5pm each day. A daily prayer at noon will be lead by various local faith leaders, followed each day by a short talk on climate change issues. The public is invited to be with the fasters at any time for any duration.

The Thanksgiving Fast and Prayer will be lead by Steve Norris, PhD a former Professor of Peace and Warren Willson and long term activist. Norris, 75, has been involved in social and environmental change work since the Civil Rights movement, this time last year he underwent major heart survey.

“I have to do something, we have to stop using fossil fuels and move to renewable energy but there is not enough urgency for many people to engage. By fasting for ten days before Thanksgiving I intend to add light, prayer and witness to the efforts to end climate change.” says Norris.

Historically many people have seen fasting as a spiritually purifying ritual which leads to greater love and compassion for all beings, something Norris believes is sorely needed in this country at this time. Fasting has also been used in nonviolent social movements to call attention to issues, including by Ghandi when all else had failed to quell violence between Hindus and Muslims in India during the struggle for independence.

Norris believes, “we can prevent catastrophic climate change and the sixth extinction but only if we join together with focused intention, prayer and action.”

Reclaimed Creations
Nov 21 @ 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
NC Arboretum

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.

About the Artist

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

I offer group classes at Primal Studios in West Asheville, and what I love about this studio is is their genuine dedication to inclusivity, empowerment, diversity, positivity, radical love and acceptance. aND they bring the super-fly playlists that make you feel like you’re up in a dance club ? finding your FREEdom and feeling that grOOve♥️. My love for music, dance, and yoga are coming together and I so look forward to sharing this! Come groove with me! ?.”

✨ Primal Studios is a Yoga/Buti Yoga/Movement studio that inspires you to move outside your comfort zone, and connect & thrive in the community as we evolve together! Visit us at 457 N. Louisiana Ave. in West Asheville, right inside the TRIBE Dance & Pole building! www.primalstudiosasheville.com ✨
