Female fronted gothic metal featuring the double bass (no guitars in their music). Death Positive.
Something Wicked(ly Awesome) This Way Comes…
Formed in 2006, Valentine Wolfe is the combined effort of the Lady Sarah Black and Braxton Ballew. Imagine Sarah Brightman being backed by Francois Rabbath blowing through a Marshall stack at midnight. Having dubbed their music “Victorian Chamber metal”, the duo have synthesized a love of metal, classical and industrial, infusing them with a Victorian sensibility that evokes the likes of Bram Stoker and Edgar Allan Poe.
The ethereal soprano vocals of Sarah Black–which call to mind not only the aforementioned Brightman, but also Dianne van Giersbergen of Xandria and Tarja Turunen–are buttressed by the thunderous growl of Braxton’s electric upright bass, and the two coalesce over pounding rock and electronic grooves punctuated by a maelstrom of synthesizers, keyboards, samples and sound design.
In addition to their gothic metal stylings, their post-graduate backgrounds in music (Sarah has an MM in Composition, and Braxton a DMA in Double Bass) has afforded them multiple opportunities to broaden their musical horizons in recent years, having been contracted to lend their unique sound to theatre productions; composing and performing the scores for Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest (Warehouse Theater), The Winter’s Tale (Furman University), and Twelfth Night (The Distracted Globe), the voice of The Angel in the Warehouse Theater’s production of Angels in America, silent films and short horror films (most notably, Your Cold Black Heart).
Drawing inspiration from all things Victorian, including literature, poetry, and history, and blending them with their musical proclivities and sensibilities and new media (such as Game of Thrones– which they recorded several songs based on the source material–and Penny Dreadful), their music has found particular favor amongst the Steampunk set.
But in a genre dominated by airships and gearwork, tophats and goggles, they follow the back alleys of streets lit with yellowed gaslamps, casting shadows long against the walls; where Jack the Ripper stalked his victims, where Dracula walked with Mina. Together they’ve provided the drama and the grandeur of the gothic at conventions all up and down the East Coast; rocking con raves with Industrial metal for a pre-industrial age, where the glowsticks are filled with absinthe.
Their latest release, The Nightingale: A Gothic Fairytale, behind which they are currently touring, is an dramatic adaptation and reinterpretation of both The Emperor and the Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen and Ode to a Nightingale by John Keats, set in a sinister Poison Garden, based on the Alnwick Botanical Gardens in England, where every single plant can kill.

TAUK, Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad, Rusted Root, Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, Tom Hamilton’s American Babies, Big Mean Sound Machine, Dynamo, The Soul Rebels, The Southern Belles, Flux Capacitor, Consider The Source, Hambone Relay, Cousin Earth, Appalachian Gypsy Tribe, Chestnut Grove, Dr. Slothclaw, YAM YAM and many more…
Imagine the nostalgic bands of your past making music that is fresh again. Modern songs built from your memories. This is the frequency movement. Musicians capturing the amalgamation of retro sounds in the current hip climate of today’s music; moving yesterday’s sound into “the now”.
#ComeGetSome #JoinTheMovement #BecomeAFreque #AMFM
The live show frequently moves from 5 to 10 musicians, each bringing a spin on original songs that seem immediately familiar. The movement hints at your memories, yet feels fresh. The musicians are virtuosic and enjoyable to watch interact with each other and the environment.
The record features 30+ live musicians over 3 days in Lancaster PA. The cast is world-class. The arrangements are emotive, dark, tense, fun and at times uplifting – as in the final resolution of “Social Club” where the 3-minute battle of tension and war concludes with a sense of light overcoming darkness.
“Consistently stellar” (Price, PA Musician Mag), AMFM is a funk-driven movement from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, led by guitarist Andy Mowatt, “an absolute musical genius” (Devoy, Tellus 360) and “jazz-rock flamethrower on guitar” (Gigspots). “Incredible musicians; “they mastered meshing together jazz, jam, rock, funk, soul and blues”…Mowatt’s “bright arrangements keep things sounding fresh” (Kelley, PA Musician), “and yet, through many influences, each tune retains a sound that is distinctly Mowatt’s” (Fly Magazine). “Confident, to-the-point, and elegant” (Rocha, The Flinging Times).

John Kadlecik Band
John Kadlecik – Guitar, vocals (Dark Star Orchestra, Furthur, Golden Gate Wingmen)
Jay Lane – Drums, vocals (RatDog, Primus, Furthur, Golden Gate Wingmen)
Benjie Porecki – Keyboards, vocals (Chuck Brown, Keller Williams)
Robin Sylvester – Bass, vocals (RatDog, Live Dead 69)
While John Kadlecik is well-known for his love for playing music of the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia, his shows offer an extensive repertoire of songs. John has been writing music and playing in bands for over three decades and has gained an appreciation for music of all kinds. His set lists are original for each show and always include a wide variety of originals and covers. From George Harrison to The Who, from Bob Dylan to Van Morrison, John’s arrangements are both interesting and inventive. And while he enjoys paying tribute to many renowned artists, his song choices are unique and often obscure.
The John Kadlecik Band currently features an amazing line up of longstanding musicians with a variety of musical backgrounds. On drums will be the incredible Jay Lane. He and Kadlecik, first played together in Furthur in 2009. Lane had been drumming in RatDog prior to the dawn of Furthur, and with Primus before that. As of late, Golden Gate Wingmen and Oteil and Friends have been ongoing projects for Kadlecik and Lane, as their musical brotherhood continues to deepen.
Benjie Porecki will be delighting audiences with his soulful and playful approach to keys. Porecki has been playing for many years with numerous great artists, such as Chaka Khan, Marshall Keys, Chuck Brown and Pieces of a Dream n the DC area and beyond. More recently he has been featured in Keller Williams’ Grateful Gospel and plays frequently with his jazz organ trio, Firm Roots.
New to JKB for this tour is San Francisco-based bassist, Robin Sylvester. Well-known for his work with Bob Weir and RatDog, Sylvester has played with many greats, including Billy Preston, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry and more recently with David Nelson & Friends and Melvin Seals & JGB. Most recently, Robin has been touring with Live Dead ‘69. His creative and energetic musicianship, connection to the Grateful Dead family and long-term background with Jay Lane are sure to make this show an extravaganza not to be missed!

Mandolin Orange
Show: 9pm
Doors: 8pm
$25 – $30
Ages 18+
Tickets & Info: www.theorangepeel.net/event/mandolin-orange-3/
Mandolin Orange’s music radiates a mysterious warmth —their songs feel like whispered secrets, one hand cupped to your ear. The North Carolina duo have built a steady and growing fanbase with this kind of intimacy, and on Tides of A Teardrop, due out February 1, it is more potent than ever. By all accounts, it is the duo’s fullest, richest, and most personal effort. You can hear the air between them—the taut space of shared understanding, as palpable as a magnetic field, that makes their music sound like two halves of an endlessly completing thought. Singer-songwriter Andrew Marlin and multi-instrumentalist Emily Frantz have honed this lamp glow intimacy for years.
On Tides of A Teardrop, Marlin wrote the songs, as he usually does, in a sort of stream of consciousness, allowing words and phrases to pour out of him as he hunted for the chords and melodies. Then, as he went back to sharpen what he found, he found something troubling and profound. Intimations of loss have always haunted the edges of their music, their lyrics hinting at impermanence and passing of time. But Tides of A Teardrop confronts a defining loss head-on: Marlin’s mother, who died of complications from surgery when he was 18.
These songs, as well as their sentiments, remain simple and quiet, like all of their music. But beneath the hushed surface, they are staggeringly straightforward. “I’ve been holding on to the grief for a long time. In some ways I associated the grief and the loss with remembering my mom. I feel like I’ve mourned long enough. I’m ready to bring forth some happier memories now, to just remember her as a living being.”
For this album, Marlin and Frantz enlisted their touring band, who they also worked with on their last album Blindfaller. Having recorded all previous albums live in the studio, they approached the recording process in a different way this time. “We went and did what most people do, which we’ve never done before—we just holed up somewhere and worked the tunes out together,” Frantz says. There is a telepathy and warmth in the interplay on Tides of A Teardrop that brings a new dynamic to the foreground—that holy silence between notes, the air that charges the album with such profound intimacy.
“This record is a little more cosmic, almost in a spiritual way—the space between the notes was there to suggest all those empty spaces the record touches on,” acknowledges Marlin. There are many powerful ways of acknowledging loss; sometimes the most powerful one is saying nothing at all.

Sarah Louise (Album Release Show!)
w/ Paula Stretch, Kima Moore
at The Mothlight
Saturday, February 2nd
Doors 8pm
Tickets: $8adv, https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1812877
Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars is Sarah Louise’s most fearless work to date. Louise broadens beyond folk forms on her latest, turning streams of raw electric guitar into entire oceans of aural texture. Her rich playing is warped beyond recognition through inventive synthesizing and digital manipulations. The innovative songs share warmth and compositional tendencies with Deeper Woods; however, remarkably, Sarah Louise’s stunning sophomore Thrill Jockey album breaks through the boundaries of solo guitar, bearing little resemblance to its predecessors.
The pieces on Nighttime Birds mine components of the Appalachian folk music Louise is steeped in, as well as spiritual jazz, contemporary classical, and new age, while drawing intensely personal inspiration from the natural world. “Ancient Intelligence” ruminates on the power of and connection to Mother Earth through wordless, almost alien skitters. For Louise, the natural and the psychedelic are indelibly linked through their ability to provide healing. Drawing inspiration from a profound healing experience she had, Sarah assembled the pieces in dedication to that healing. Compositions exude spiritual relief and exploration, as they are both explorative musically and soothing in their gentle, delicate details. Moments of surreal intensity bubble forth on tracks like “Chitin Flight” which stoke curiosity and provide flares of tension and relief. Pieces like this offer Louise’s unique take on what a guitar solo can be while whimsically playing with guitar tropes of the psychedelic era.
Technically she approached performance on the album in a patulous manner, improvising on electric guitar in standard tuning, rather than her signature 12-string acoustic guitar and song- specific tunings. This radically different approach for Sarah was in and of itself liberating as well as inspiring. Louise carried this intuitional mindset with her into recording new pieces. Like Deeper Woods, she engineered the album herself, but with a new focus on innovative use of her recording program. With her improvisations as the raw material, she carefully crafted deliberate compositions that are her most painterly and cosmic work to date. Sampling herself, Louise’s approach to composing with guitar magnifies single notes, short patterns and overtones to reveal microtonality and otherworldly timbres. Frayed rhythms flow freely atop and between lush waves of devotional drones. Variations in speed and tone transform the guitar across the album from brassy bellows to the sounds of rustling insects.
Louise’s daring blend of heartfelt stream of conscious playing and bold studio processing demonstrates her unique ability to craft poignant music regardless of what tools she uses. She finds harmony rather than dissonance in synthesizing raw and organic materials with the technological. Sections of electronic bursts swell and ebb with a lifelike pulse, collapsing distinction between the natural and artificial. Each piece inhabits its own biosphere and Louise’s guitar and voice act as the flora and fauna. With Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars, Sarah Louise has reimagined the limitations of guitar music to create a work of sublime resplendence.
