The smashingly successful Asheville Drag Brunch will host another spectacular show on Sunday, June 9 at 12:30 p.m. at Banks Ave.@ in Asheville, NC. The $20 ticket includes a fabulous brunch catered by AUX Bar and the hour-long drag show. Tickets are on sale now at www.AshevilleDragBrunch.com. This unique event is a fundraiser for Our VOICE, a crisis intervention and prevention agency which serves victims of sexual violence, age 13 through adult, in Buncombe County.
Banks Avenue Bar boasts full-service bar and AUX Bar catering promises a bountiful brunch with vegetarian options. The family-friendly drag queen entertainment promises to be sing along top-notch fun with plenty of laughter and audience interaction. The show includes performances by professional queens including Ginger Von Snap, Sya Cox, Erica Chanel and is hosted by The Bearded Lady: DIVINE (Divinity Holeburn)– they’re a hoot!

ABOUT ASHEVILLE DRAG BRUNCH:
Asheville Drag Brunch is the littlest big show in town! The event is designed to showcase local and guest drag queens, promote local restaurant businesses, and support local charities.
The show happens at multiple venues, is fast-paced family-friendly fun, and is designed to raise funds for non-profit organizations. These local groups rotate and are advertised with each individual show.
A ticket to brunch ensures a seat at a table or bar, the meal, and a beverage. Remember to bring tips for the queens as this is the main way they raise additional money for the local non-profit.
During the glitter-adorned affairs, patrons howl, clap and cheer as the queens channel celebrities with spot-on lip syncing and sky-high heels. And wherever you look, there is cause for celebration. Lively groups of different genders, races and ages whoop it up for all sorts of special occasions, from birthdays to bachelorettes to anniversaries, and even divorces.

Facilitated by Body Dialogue™ practitioner, Madelyn Ilana, this class will offer a 90 minute guided somatic practice of grounding, exploring fluidity in movement, finding ease in our breathing and feeling comfort in our bodies.
Throughout the practice, Madelyn will weave some live ambient violin music.
From a place of center and ground, after the movement practice, participants will come together for an open conversation about our planet’s waters, and discuss strategies for how individuals can all serve as stewards and tenders of Mother Earth. The class can share resources and ideas with one another.

The documentary film Gay Chorus Deep South chronicles the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir as they embarked on a 2017 tour of the American Deep South in hopes of uniting in a time of difference.
Led by Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig, the tour brought a message of music, love, and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Over 300 singers traveled from Mississippi to Tennessee through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma, performing in churches, community centers, and concert halls. The journey challenged Seeling and other chorus members who fled the South to confront their own fears, pain, and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation.
The film, which highlights First Baptist Greenville and Pastor Jim Dant, shows what happened when the lines that often divide us – faith, politics, and sexual identity – were erased through the soaring power of music, humanity, and a little drag.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A panel discussion with the film’s director David Charles Rodrigues, Executive Director Christopher Verdugo, Producer Bud Johnson, Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig, and First Baptist Greenville Pastor Jim Dant.
The documentary comes to Greenville after making its world premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.

The Asheville School of Improv is excited to offer a special edition of The Performance Lab focused on the classic long-form improv structure, The Harold. Originally performed by the troupe, The Committee, in San Francisco in the late 60s, this three-tiered structure is now performed by troupes all around the world. Instructor Tom Chalmers studied The Harold with one its original creators, Del Close, at Improv Olympic in Chicago. Tom performed Harolds as part of the college troupes, The Purple Crayon of Yale and Columbia’s Six Milks. Tom continued to do Harolds with a number of NYC troupes, including Gigantic Man, The Upright Citizens Brigade’s first house team, with fellow members Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel. Tom is currently a member of the popular Ashevile improv troupe, Reasonably Priced Babies.
This six-week course will focus on teaching the basic structure of The Harold as well as strategies on how best to execute the stages of the long-form structure; the opening, the scenes, and the group games. Students will learn how to pull apart themes, insert and invent fun filler games, as well as how to establish and return to scenes through practiced approaches like time dash, same dynamic, world within a world, and more. The class will also reinforce the philosophy preached by Del Close: there is no set way to do a Harold. Rigidity is the enemy of spontaneity.
Students will act as a Harold troupe (or troupes) and perform the format several times over the several Sundays and eventually perform a Harold in front of a paying audience as part of an end-of-class performance, currently scheduled for June 23rd.
Eligible students must have completed the Basic and Beyond Basic classes at The Asheville School of Improv or a similar level of learning at a recognized improv academy. All applying students must be approved by the instructor.

A graduate of Columbia University, Tom has been absorbing, performing, and advocating improv comedy for over thirty years. While at college, Tom spent summers in Chicago studying with Second City and Improv Olympic, where he learned under improv legend, Del Close. Tom chose to stay in New York where he trained with The Groundlings East / Gotham City Improv. He was a student, performing company member, teacher, and eventually Artistic Director. While in New York, Tom also trained with the Upright Citizen’s Brigade and Burn Manhattan. Tom’s former students have gone on to work on such shows as Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, and Family Guy, as well as several successful feature films. Tom has been an instructor at NYU, a guest lecturer at Columbia, and is currently an Adjunct Professor at Warren Wilson College. Tom takes all the best ideas and approaches from all the people and programs that he has worked with and blends them together to define his supportive yet demanding style of teaching.

Improv I: The Basics of Inspired Improvisation
Incorporating aspects of the top improv programs in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, this course covers the fundamentals of improvisational acting with an emphasis on comedy; such as listening, commitment, adding information, agreement, intuitive reaction over desperate invention, as well as recognizing and capitalizing on emerging patterns. The class is crafted in such a way to have participants gradually gain their improv instincts through enjoyable and achievable exercises rather than teaching them the taste of disappointment and frustration. Students will gain experience in unscripted comedic performance through improvised stories, scenes, games and group structures. The final class will be open to friends and family to attend to give the students a chance to feel the lift of performing for a live audience.

Improv II: Beyond the Basics – Learning to Fly
Improv II will reinforce all of the skills learned in Improv I by applying those skills to advanced scene work, original character development structures, and intentionally conflict-filled scenarios. Beyond Basic will encourage students to no longer be bound by the rules of improv but to swing freely and see that the strategies are not restricting but sound instincts. Students will gain further experience in unscripted comedic performance through more involved improvised stories, scenes, games and group structures. The final class will be open to friends and family to attend to give the students a chance to feel the lift of performing for a live audience.
Prerequisite: Improv 1 or extensive improv experience (approved by instructor)

Dr. Sarah Amedoro and Erin Gahan Clark will host this event the second Sunday of each month at Veda Studios. We will gather to chant and sing prayers from a variety of cultures and lineages. This offering is for everyone – no prior experience needed!
Song sheets will be prepared, pronunciation reviewed, and lineage/heritage discussed. Donations from the Heart are welcomed!
