The original compositions & playing of Up Jumped Three are a collection of varied influences – West Coast jazz, free jazz, & modern/avant-garde. With no drummer, the trio format opens up, allowing the timbre & unique character of each instrument to shine through in an almost ‘chamber music’ type of atmosphere. Up Jumped Three continues to carve out its own space on the AVL jazz scene.

Come see the hopeful and uplifting representations of masculinity that the artists of ZaPow have created in the forthcoming group show; Reclaiming Masculinity.
Masculinity does not have to equal assaulting people with less power. It’s time to stop accepting that Boys will be Boys. In these troubled times we look to our heroes and role models in Pop Culture to reclaim what it means to be masculine.
Actor Terry Krews flexes his giant muscles while also proudly proclaiming his status as a feminist. Spok highlights the benefit of cool headed contemplation in place of naked aggression. Fin and Jake (from Adventure Time) are rough and tumble adventure seekers but they would never use their power or abilities to harm others. Gandalf succeeds in battling the darkness of Sauron through clever planning and orchestration of others strengths in place of shock and awe desolation. Nick Offerman, (famed woodworker and man’s man) eloquently stated what it can mean to be masculine when he was asked in an interview about the last time that he cried:
“I went to theatre school. I took two semesters of ballet. I’m the sissy in my family. I cry with pretty great regularity. It’s not entirely accurate to equate me with manliness. I stand for my principals and I work hard and I have good manners but machismo is a double-sided coin. A lot of people think it requires behavior that can quickly veer into misogyny and things I consider indecent. We’ve been sold this weird John Wayne mentality that fistfights and violence are vital to being a man. I’d rather hug than punch. Crying at something that moves you to joy or sadness is just as manly as chopping down a tree or punching out a bad guy. To answer your question, I recently saw Alicia Keys perform live. I’d never seen her before and the sheer golden, heavenly talent issuing from her and her singing instrument had both my wife and me in tears. What a gorgeous gift she has. Her voice is so great. And I had no shame [about crying.] If you live your life openly with your emotions, that’s a more manly stance than burying them.”
So, if you have grown weary of domestic terrorism and sexual violence, visit ZaPow to help us focus our culture’s attention on the good that masculinity has to offer our society. Let us not lose hope for what we may build if we stand together.

As we step into 2019 ,there is still a substantial amount of unrest in the world. Yogi Bhajan said we would get though these times. By gifting us with his teachings and kundalini yoga so many years ago, we now have the tools to carry us through so that we might help others do the same. Kundalini yoga has given me an inner strength to move forward, as a healthy, happy,(w)holy human and I hope to share it with you.
Please come and dive into this series as we focus on developing a neutral mind and a fully open heart. In this we can find grace, compassion, courage, inner peace and embrace all that is available to us to change our world within and around us.
This is a great place to start if you have never tried Kundalini Yoga. If you have questions [email protected] or 828-606-4092

Join soprano Simone Vigilante and pianist Daniel Weiser in this powerful, inspiring, and exciting program of Spirituals and Ragtime to celebrate the African-American musical experience
AmiciMusic, meaning Music Among Friends, is an award-winning musical organization based in Asheville, NC that is dedicated to playing the highest quality chamber music in intimate venues and non-traditional spaces. They aim to break down barriers between performers and audience by establishing a more informal and relaxed atmosphere often including food and drinks. Dr. Weiser also presents short anecdotes before each piece is played about the composer to help put the works in socio-historical context. This is chamber music the way it was meant to be heard and seen—in a true chamber—and performed with the spirit, energy and intensity that this great music requires.
