About Snowbound: It’s Christmas Eve in 1955 at a small town train depot where the snowy weather has caused some delays. Over the course of the evening, strangers become friends, friends become family, and the warmth of human connection is deepened through stories and songs. Though the weather outside is frightful, inside the depot it’s delightful as memories of Christmases past are shared. Written by local storyteller and musician Tom Godleski and performed with original music and traditional songs by local bluegrass musicians.

MUSIC
With a wide repertoire ranging from early ragtime, pop, & New Orleans trad, to upbeat American & Hot Club Swing, they play gems from every era of early jazz. With the combination of Sparrow Pants on vocals and accordion, Keith J. Smith on guitar and suitcase, Leo Johnson on clarinet, and Trevor Stoia on upright bass, Sparrow & her Wingmen are soaring to new heights.

BLUES
Band finished and you’re not done dancing? You’re in luck… stick around for our vintage blues hour! Continue dancing to DJ’d music until the bar kicks us out. $2 suggested donation for those coming just for the blues hour.

FOOD: Feeling peckish? The bar has a small selection of vegan goodies to help keep your stamina up! Ask a bartender for more details.

CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class: Intermediate Partner Charleston w/ Sparrow & Jean

We will be working on side by side variations for the first two weeks, tandem entrances, exits, and variations for weeks 3 and 4, and for the 5th week of October we will be doing a special class on switching and stealing- super useful for jams and social dancing!

“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.

8 pm: Core Class: Intro to 8-count Lindy Hop w/ Sparrow & Keith

Learn the foundations of the 8 count Lindy Hop, the high energy dance from Harlem that swept the nation and then the globe. Starting from the very beginning, breaking down the steps and rhythms in easy to understand ways, Keith and Sparrow will get ya on the dance floor and having fun in no time. No partner required and drop in friendly, though of course you’ll learn the most if you start at the beginning of the month and stay till the end!

“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).

The event showcases about 100 quilts made by the members of the Guild. The quilts range from the traditional to modern and from king-sized to wall hangings. Craft boutiques feature a variety of articles made by members for sale to visitors.

Fall and Christmas articles are always favorites at the show, and the Bake Shop always sells out of yummy munchies.

Entry is $3 and there is loads of free parking.

That’s right, the family that embodies Halloween – The Addams Family – is making an appearance at the Capitol Theatre on October 11th for Family Movie Night Series.

Join Gomez, Morticia, Lurch, Thing, Wednesday, and Pugsley as they help their long-lost Uncle Fester remember his family and stop his “adoptive” parents from stealing the Addams’ fortune. All with the oddities that a family…and a home… like the Adams family brings.

The Capitol Theatre will have a Opie’s Pizza food truck under the marquee for a quick and easy dinner with the family from 5 – 6:30. Concessions will also be available throughout the movie. Doors open at 5:30, and the movie begins at 6:30.

Asheville Outlets (www.ShopAshevilleOutlets.com) is pleased to host the 19th Annual Autumn in the Mountains Car Show Saturday, October 13, 2018. The show will open at 9:00 a.m. with Best-of-Class awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m. Past shows have attracted over 120 cars and motorcycles. Admission is free and open to the public.

Autumn in the Mountains Car Show is an annual charitable event which is open to any and all British and European cars and motorcycles. For this year’s event, the designated charity is ‘Meals on Wheels’ of both Buncombe and Henderson Counties.

Our annual Fall Festival includes free games and bounce houses for the kids, a silent auction, a BBQ sale, live music, car show, pumpkin patch, and other entertainment. We’ll also be offering tours of West Campus and Independent Living Village. We will share an update on our Second Century of HOPE. All proceeds go to meet the daily needs of the children in care.

Jeff began to play drums in the sixth grade. Then In 1975, Jeff’s first stepping stone was attending the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music. — One of Jeff’s dreams finally came true when he was accepted to Berklee in 1977. While at Berklee, Jeff studied under Bob Kaufman and Bill Norine, he attended clinics given by Alan Dawson and was taken under by his mentor Lee Venters. Jeff was lucky enough to attend Berklee with an impressive cast of musicians like Branford Marsalis, Bill Frisell, Mike Stern and Jeff Watts, Kevin Eubanks, Dean Parks, Steve Vai, just to name a few.

While studying at Berklee, Jeff met and played in a band with Steve Vai and Baron Brown called “Winter”. This experience turned Jeff on to a wide world of music and rhythm which gave him valuable tools that he still carries with him today.

After his stay in Boston, Jeff moved to Atlanta in 1983. There he began gigging and teaching at the Atlanta Institute for Music and at a popular hang out for Atlanta drummers, Atlanta Drums and Percussion. Jeff spent time sitting in with local musicians and was introduced to Bruce Hampton through Dan Wall, a keyboardist that he had been playing with…..and that’s the rest of the story. It seemed too fitting that their first meeting took place at a wedding because not only was there a marriage there was a wedding of vast musical intention. Jeff then asked Oteil Burbridge and Jimmy Herring to sit in on this free willed musical band wagon and the Aquarium Rescue Unit was born.

In 1996, Jeff met up with Swedish-born bass extraordinaire Jonas Hellborg and the Memphis guitar monster Shawn Lane. This Trio did many Europoean tours as well as American tours. Jonas released 4 recordings of this band including “Temporal Analogues of Paradise”, a classic.

Jeff’s interest in bluegrass music led him to 3 years with “Leftover Salmon” where he gigged almost non stop! The recording “Nashville Sessions” was a high lite of that period having an opportunity to work with Randy and Earl Srcruggs, Bela Fleck, Waylon Jennings, Lucinda Williams, Taj Mahal, & Jerry Douglas among others.

Jeff took on his own creation known as the Zambiland Orchestra. This experimental big band featured Ricky Keller conducting members of Phish, Widespread Panic, Michael Ray and the Cosmic Crew, the Derek Trucks Band, the Fiji Mariners, MOE, Little Feat, Sam Bush, John Cowan, Warren Haynes, Stanton Moore, the Atlanta All-Stars, Little John, Sonny Emory Randy Honea, and many others.

The Zambiland Orchestra performed as a charity event for six years in a row every December just before Christmas at the Variety Playhouse as a benefit for Hospice and the food bank.

By the 4th year into it there where 83 players on stage being conducted by the great spirit Ricky Keller and Jeff. One invited guest was Matt Butler who was so inspired by this spirited event that he began his own version called the” Everyone Orchestra”.

Even more recently Jeff teamed up with long time friend and guitar maniac Jimmy Herring on a project known as Z, that’s Project Z to most. Together with fellow Atlantian producer/musician Ricky Keller and mega organ/keyboardist Oliver Wells, Project Z recorded a self titled debut album filled with juicy fusionisk tunes that gathered praise from all realms. Since then a second Project Z has been released as well as Jeff’s solo release “Timeless” featuring Paul Hanson, Derek Jones, Jason Crosby, Kofi Burbridge, Count ‘M Butu and Derek Trucks.

A night of classic drag pageantry with the haunting twist of Halloween creativity. Contestants will bring their most creative gowns, jaw-droppingly good talents and unique on-stage answers as they compete for the title of Miss Inferno 2018. Our audience will be on the edge of their seats as these ladies fight for the win.

Contestants that haven’t already achieved the title and crown of Honey Boo/Inferno are eligible. Contestants must be in good standing with Scandals Nightclub and not work at any other establishment within 50 miles.

BACKSTAGE NOTICE
No one except for contestants, dressers, and dancers are allowed in the dressing area. Dancers are only allowed backstage prior to talent and must leave after your talent. Upon crowning, no one is allowed backstage except judges, contestants and dressers. THIS IS WHEN JUDGES WILL BE DOING CRITIQUES AND WILL NEED TO MOVE QUICKLY IN THE BACK ROOM. NO EXCEPTIONS. All extra bodies backstage at those RESTRICTED times will be removed from the property.

JUDGING NOTICE
To be fair to all contestants, the highest and lowest scores for each category will not be considered in the final tabulation. Furthermore, an additional judge may be added or substitution may occur due to an absence.
