This intensive course combines wilderness medicine with urban medical care practices into a single month-long program that includes clinical rotations helping to provide care for real patients. After four weeks of classroom education, practical skills, scenarios and full-scale mock rescues, you will be ready to handle medical emergencies, in the wilderness or right in town.
The first three weeks of the experience is focused on EMT training, with an immersion into urban care. You will complete mandatory clinical time on an ambulance, emergency room setting, and/or long-term care facility, and be eligible for both the NC OEMS exam and the NREMT exam at course end. At the end of the EMT experience, a fourth week of the NOLS Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals enables you to receive your NOLS WEMT certification.

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”
Hikers will witness what has been described as some of the most stunning scenery on the entire 900+ mile Mountain to Sea (MTS) Trail. This hike follows the MTS Trail to top of Bearwallow Stand Ridge and includes some bushwacking to arrive at the junction of the Old Perley Crockett Railroad grade. These mountain, the Blacks, are the highest mountains in the Eastern United States and take their name from the darkly colored Fraser fir and red spruce trees that adorn their slopes.

DeTour de Skunk is a charity bicycle ride through the foothills of the Blue Ridge that begins and ends at the Albino Skunk Music Festival, Saturday October 6, 2018. Check in starts at 8:00 am, the ride starts at 9:00 am. Riders get a commemorative t-shirt, and a wristband good for a few hours of entry to the festival afterwards and a cold beer (if 21, of course).
Proceeds of our Fall 2018 rides benefit Lennox Ostendorff, a regular Skunkfest kiddo and all around cool 9 year old dude. Lennox has been diagnosed with X-linked ALD, a rare and incurable genetic disorder (learn more here: www.stopald.org/what-is-ald). Details about Lennox and a direct donation link can be made here: https://www.gofundme.com/loving-lennox
The ride costs $35. Advance, on-line sign-up is now closed. Saturday morning day-of sign-up will be available starting at 8:00 am (cash or check). Please be there by 8:30 am, as the ride leaves at 9:00 am.
There are two routes of differing distance and difficulty. The short route is a beginner-friendly 15 mile run (639 total feet of gain) along rolling country roads from the Skunk Farm to 1909 Campbell’s Covered Bridge and back. The long route, which is 34 miles (1928 total feet of gain) and has a couple of more difficult climbs, includes the short route and also goes through Tigerville and past the 1820 Poinsett Bridge. There are parks at each bridge. We’ll have manned rest stops at each with refreshments, and for a look and photos if you like.
Route information is immediately below for Map My Ride and Google Maps. Note that the Google Maps Long Route shows an optional Bypass if you wish to go further than the Short Route takes you (through Tigerville and up to Route 11), but you want to skip the difficult climb past the Poinsett Bridge.
We will have pre-race equipment checks and adjustments and an on-call SAG vehicle if a need arises on the routes. We will have personnel with food and drink at each rest stop.
And as a reminder, we now have two private showers for campers and cyclists!
