The number of opioid related deaths in NC has risen from 170 to 601 in 5 years; Heroin deaths have increased by 584% during that time. In 2018, 26.7% in Swain County reported using opioids. What can we do?
Please join Brandon Wiggins (Swain EMS), Kallup McCoy (Rez Hope), Ted Duncan (Bryson City First Baptist Church), Rebecca Hoffman (Cherokee Pharmacy), and others to address and discuss questions related to opioid prevention, use, and treatment. This series is meant to unite WNC communities, and learn from the community members – you are the experts in the area. We encourage EVERYONE to be a part of the discussion to a potential solution. Together, as a whole, we can make a difference.

SUBMIT APPLICATIONS AND NOMINATIONS AT www.ventureasheville.com/venture15
The Venture 15 awards the 15 fastest-growing Asheville-area startups. This event recognizes the area’s outstanding entrepreneurs, and serves as an elite setting where they can share their talent and wisdom as well as offer inspiration to other fledgling companies to be part of this exclusive group.
Startups are measured by their Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), using year-end revenues. This is a valuable measurement to view a venture’s growth rate over time, and allows us to use one metric to compare all ventures. Application deadline is Nov. 7 at 12 pm.
Venture Asheville Honors
In addition to honoring the 15 fastest growing ventures in our area, we will also award the Venture Asheville Honors to:
Mentor of the Year
These are individuals actively participating in any of the facilitated mentorship programs from the area who have gone above and beyond what is required of mentors. This award goes to an individual who exceeds expectations, is an ally, advocate, and adviser to startups in a purely volunteer capacity.
Investor of the Year
These are investors who do more than cut a check and wait for a return. Not the most active investor, in terms of amount funded in the last year, but to an investor who becomes an asset to the startup in terms of funding, guidance, board service, or mentorship.
Entrepreneur of the Year
This award goes to an individual entrepreneur who leads a growing startup and adds value to the entrepreneurial ecosystem either through mentorship, volunteering, progressive advocacy, community involvement or other examples of entrepreneurial leadership.
Resource of the Year
This award goes to a resource partner, organization, or special program that provides exceptional value in the form of support to startups.
and the 2018 Award of Courage
This award honors a tenacious and resilient entrepreneur in the community. One who may be going through ups-and-downs but should stick with it, not quit, and keep on striving!
These awards will be determined by open nomination and committee selection. DEADLINE TO NOMINATE is Nov. 7, 2018

This Thursday, December 6th, you are cordially invited to the Astronomy Club of Asheville’s 7th annual club holiday social and fundraiser auction! The event begins at 6:30 p.m., giving you time to look over our selection of nice silent and live auction items (many of them make wonderful holiday gifts) as well as time to enjoy an appetizing spread of tasty food and refreshments!
The event is open to the general public and you need not be a member to attend.
While we are thrilled that our meeting attendance is typically astronomical (pun intended), we seldom have enough time to socialize and get to know our like-minded friends better. We’re a strange breed – we often meet in dark locations, craning our necks upwards and chatting for hours with folks we won’t recognize in the light of day. But Thursday you’ll have a chance to prove you’re not THAT strange (well…. myself excepted)! Please join us and partake in some esprit de corps, get to know each other better, bid on an item or two and contribute your company to make our holiday event a success.
AND… if you do attend, we promise you will LAUGH heartily at our guest auctioneer, Randy Latta. We haven’t a clue what character he will conjure (that’s part of the fun!) but we guarantee it will be entertaining. Do yourself a favor and come along – if not for the food, drink, good company or the chance to bid and possibly win any number of great items, then come for the LAUGHS!!!!
Those who attend and register for an auction paddle will automatically be entered to win one of three special door prizes. While you will need to be present to win, you need not bid on any item to be eligible. And if you have an item that might be suitable for our auction, please bring it along.
Food, drink, friends, prizes, a chance to show your support for our club, AND LAUGHTER. What’s not to like???
We hope to see you Thursday at the Manheimer Room at UNCA’s Reuter Center. The festivities start at 6:30 p.m.
