A year of jazz conservatory at Virginia Commonwealth University left Ben Phan rebellious: uninspired by the environment and fed-up with the structure, he knew he didn’t want to be an academic musician.
So Phan began his professional career as a founding member of the Richmond Afrobeat Movement, a blend of jazz, funk and African dance music which earned significant attention in the South, including a TV appearance and other media features.
A stint as Musical Director for Free Run Wine Merchants gave Phan a chance to develop his professional skills, setting up musical events for the company, which included solo jazz gigs as well as band arrangements.
Phan then joined a bluegrass and folk band, the Rusty Strings, and discovered the joy in sitting on a porch and singing together with others, simply for the love of music.
In 2014, Phan decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail and his life changed forever. Along with everything else he needed, he carried a mini-guitar on his back and became known by the name “Shredder” because of how he “shredded the guitar” when he played. Five months of travel on foot, 2,668 miles from the Mexican border all the way into Canada, playing for himself and the people he met, transformed his relationship with music. He began writing songs, drawn from his experiences on the trail as well as his past struggles with depression, addiction, loss and love. The music offered hope and solace, to him and to his audiences.
The time on the Pacific Crest Trail renewed Phan’s passion for music. With a prolific body of original work, he returned to Asheville to record his first solo EP, “Hold On, Let Go.” He assembled a band, made up of some of the best musicians in Asheville: besides liking his music, they appreciate the dedication and professionalism Phan brings to his work. The band released it’s debut album, “Dreams in Modern Folk”, to a sold out crowd at the Altamont Theatre, one of Asheville’s finest listening rooms. The band continued to perform successful shows over the following year, refining their high energy sound which combines fiery improvisation with rich composition. This led to a successful kickstarter campaign to fund their next album, “Fear is the Teacher”, which the band is currently recording with Grammy winning producer Matt Williams. Phan continues to perform with the band, as a solo artist, and in collaborations with other musicians; he has also built a successful guitar teaching practice, which he finds a great source of inspiration.
Phan is a prolific poet, songwriter, and guitarist, with the soul of an improviser. He crafts his songs to give room for improvisation, presence, and self-expression in the moment. He believes that the best live music is when everyone playing is co-creating – which means that every one of his concerts offers audiences a different sound and a unique experience.

Lining: Sheathing is a large-scale installation about the tactile and protective qualities of textiles by collaborators Denise Bookwalter and Lee Running. The artists have been working together for five years, creating installations and artist books that include printed fabric, handmade paper, woodblock prints, custom garments and embroidery. This installation has been developed in residencies at Penland School of Crafts, Penland NC, Constellation Studios, Lincoln NE, and Small Craft Advisory Press, Tallahassee FL. The focal point of the installation is a room-size tent suspended beneath a skylight. The tent is made from large printed and dyed textile panels which create a space that viewers can enter. Viewers are invited to try on one of the handmade garments and view the series of eight queen bed sized woodblock prints on handmade paper. For the exhibition at the WCU Fine Art Museum, Bookwalter and Running will also create a three-story site-specific window installation for the atrium of the Bardo Arts Center.

Living Web Farms to Offer DIY Instruction on Building A Germination Chamber
It’s time to start early seeds for the vegetable garden, and getting a jumpstart in these finicky temperatures can be really tough. Wouldn’t it be great to have a small-scale germination chamber where you could propagate seeds under ideal conditions without having to constantly monitor and adjust temperature and humidity? On January 30th, Living Web Farms offers a class on building such a germination cabinet, using recycled materials and commonly available hardware.
Mills River, NC- It’s already hard to start food crops early in the calendar year, and with the recent variable temperatures, getting seeds off to a good start, or healing tree grafts can be stressful for farmers, and often more trouble than its worth for home gardeners. The solution many growers turn to is a climate-controlled chamber for seedlings and grafts, however commercial models can cost several thousand dollars. On January 30th at 6pm, Living Web Farms’ Richard Freudenberger will teach farmers and gardeners how to build one for themselves, at low-cost, and how to use it to maximize results.
“In the workshop, we’ll explore the use of recycled and repurposed materials and some commonly available hardware store and electronic parts to assemble a functional and reliable germination chamber that will get your starts off on the right foot,” Freudenberger says. The applications are many—with local farmers needing vegetable starts to sell at the beginning of market season, home growers needing to set plants out after last frost, and fruit enthusiasts looking for a solution to the high needs of freshly grafted trees.
Participants in the class will learn how to construct an insulated benchtop chamber that fits seven seed-starter trays and uses a temperature-controlled water bath, wide-spectrum interior light, and controlled humidity to provide an ideal environment for seed starting and new-graft healing, and can also be used for small-scale sweet potato and winter squash curing. The controlled environment improves germination rates and maintains consistency, a big advantage at harvest time. It also reduces the need for watering due to the high humidity content.
Freudenberger will explain the construction techniques, insulation choices, heating and lighting requirements, and precise humidity control using an inexpensive microprocessor. The workshop is designed for beginners, so even those without knowledge of technology or construction are encouraged to attend, and materials lists and research references will be provided to take home, allowing all attendees to confidently complete the project on their own farm or garden.
