An unadulterated foodie delight, Chewdaism: A Taste of Jewish Montreal follows two Montrealers through an entire day’s worth of eating in and around the city as they discover their own personal heritage within the story of Jewish Montreal. Through charming cooking sights, the city’s rich cuisine is joyfully captured in this visually sumptuous culinary adventure that explores the art and pleasure of preparing and savoring Kosher gastronomic choices largely drawn from localized ingredients. As our guides discover the roots of the city’s Jewish community through a series of classical Jewish eateries, they tell the story of their 100-year-old community, with various guests along the way sharing tales and meals. Chewdaism is as illuminating as it is lively, joyous, and a mouth-watering feast for the eyes and the soul.

About Wild and Scenic:
The Wild & Scenic Film Festival was started in 2003 by the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL, pronounced ‘circle’), a watershed advocacy group based in the Sierra foothills of Northern California. The organization was formed in 1983 when a small group of concerned citizens banded together to fight against several proposed dams.

The festival’s namesake is in celebration of achieving Wild & Scenic status on 39 miles of the South Yuba River in 1999. The festival celebrates its annual event in Nevada City, CA each winter featuring over 150 award-winning films and welcoming filmmakers, celebrities, and activists who bring a human face to the environmental movement. SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival is a call to action! The films illustrate not only the challenges facing our planet but the work communities are doing to protect the environment and the places we love. The stories give us a sense of place and what it means to be responsible stewards of the earth.

About Mills River Valley Trail and Conserving Carolina:
A new path along NC 280 is being developed that will create a safe route for walking and biking, linking the heart of Mills River to the French Broad River. The Mills River Valley Trail will make travel along that route safer for everyone, provide opportunities for recreation, and make Mills River a more attractive place to live and work. It will also connect residents, employees and visitors to local businesses and community resources.

The Town of Mills River successfully applied for grant funding from NCDOT that will pay for 80% ($240,000) of the cost of the first phase of construction of this project. Conserving Carolina has partnered with the Town and is leading the fundraising effort for this project to raise the required 20% local matching funds. Conserving Carolina has a strong history of developing parks, trails and greenways in partnership with local governments including Henderson County and the Towns of Fletcher, Flat Rock and Laurel Park. In 2013, with the support of local donors, Conserving Carolina initiated the vision for the Mills River Valley Trail with a preliminary conceptual study developed in partnership with the Town. Since then, Conserving Carolina has continued to work with the Town to make the vision a reality.

Avital meets Avital
Apr 11 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Peace Center

Avi Avital was the first mandolin soloist to be nominated for a classical Grammy® Award. Omer Avital has been named “one of the most exciting musicians to come onto the jazz scene in the last 20 years” (DownBeat). Together, their music uncovers their shared past in a creative blend of Moroccan beats, Israeli harmonies, classical sensibility, and jazz improvisation. It’s also a meeting of two musical backgrounds: the classically-trained Avi “meets” the jazz-trained Omer; tradition meets modernism; East meets West. The result is a “foot-stomping, hip-swaying jazz and Middle Eastern fusion” (Gramophone) that tells a story of self-discovery that is as intimately personal as it is universal.
