9-11pm: Swing AVL Dance w/ Gravyhouse Storytellers
11-12pm: Vintage Blues Hour w/ DJ
~~~~~~~~~~~~
PRICING: Dance/Band is $5 (includes blues hour) and classes are $10/$8 for Swing Asheville members. Vintage Blues Hour is $2 suggested donation for those who didn’t pay for Dance/Band admission.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Interested in free dances or half priced lessons? Want to help promote the swing scene? Consider volunteering for Swing Asheville! To see what sort of opportunities are available and to sign up, please head over to http://signup.com/go/qiyRjLG
MUSIC
The Gravy-House Storytellers presents mouth-watering musical marmalade from the 1920’s through the 1940’s. ‘The Gravyhouse Storytellers’ is a small-combo swing ensemble from Asheville, NC. The storytellers perform authentic arrangements of Pre-WWII-era Blues Shoutin’ and Swing tunes. Their repertoire favors ‘mid-tempo blues’ and is appropriate for Lindy, Balboa, and East/West coast alike.
BLUES
Band finished and you’re not done dancing? You’re in luck… stick around for our vintage blues hour! Continue dancing to DJ’d music until the bar kicks us out. $2 suggested donation for those coming just for the blues hour.
FOOD: Feeling peckish? The bar has a small selection of vegan goodies to help keep your stamina up! Ask a bartender for more details.
CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class: Intermediate Partner Charleston w/ Sparrow & Jean
We will be working on side by side variations for the first two weeks, tandem entrances, exits, and variations for weeks 3 and 4, and for the 5th week of October we will be doing a special class on switching and stealing- super useful for jams and social dancing!
“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************
8 pm: Core Class: Intro to 8-count Lindy Hop w/ Sparrow & Keith
Learn the foundations of the 8 count Lindy Hop, the high energy dance from Harlem that swept the nation and then the globe. Starting from the very beginning, breaking down the steps and rhythms in easy to understand ways, Keith and Sparrow will get ya on the dance floor and having fun in no time. No partner required and drop in friendly, though of course you’ll learn the most if you start at the beginning of the month and stay till the end!
“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).
*************************
GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.
Eliada’s Annual Corn Maze
Oct 23 @ 9:29 pm
This year, Eliada will maintain some beloved attractions including the tractor ride, which now drives all the way around the Corn Maze, jumping pillow, corn kernel sand box, spider web climber, tube slides, and corn cannons.
The Corn Maze raises $100,000 for the agency every year, and we have come to rely on this event to support our programs,” says Davis-Bryant. “I never thought I’d have a job in which I relied on a field of corn growing! I am proud of the agency for engaging in this kind of risk taking. The corn has grown beautifully, and we can be proud of the ways we have improved the event for the long-term sustainability of our land.
This year, Eliada is also adding beer and cider sales to the makeup of the event.
This option, available to guests only on weekends (Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons), will help the agency increase revenue to support the growing needs children and youth face in our community. Eliada is excited to work with local and national partners to provide an array of beer and cider options!
The Get Right Band
“The Get Right Band are the type of performers that you just know will break out. Their songs are infectious and take you immediately to a very happy place. The lyrics are smart and bear weight.”
-The Huffington Post
THE GET RIGHT BAND is “hip-shaking, earthquaking pure funk fun” (The Alternate Root). They are one of Relix Magazine’s “On The Verge” picks, Home Grown Music Network’s 2015 “Best New Band of the Year,” and were voted “Best Progressive Band” in Western North Carolina by Mountain Xpress readers. Combining catchy, clever, honest songwriting with musical expertise and fearless improvisation, the live show promises to move your head, heart, and hips.
GRB has performed on the famed World Cafe, a nationally syndicated NPR show, and has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Everclear, Rusted Root, Dr. Dog, Ozomatli, Smash Mouth, Victor Wooten Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Boyd Tinsley (of Dave Matthews Band), Martin Barre (of Jethro Tull), Badfish, Turkuaz, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, Mike Dillon Band, and many more.
“Tight and diverse jams and a distinctive, intellectual but accessible worldview.”
-Live For Live Music
The band is built on the musical brotherhood that guitarist/vocalist Silas Durocher and bassist Jesse Gentry have formed playing music together since middle school. Durocher, who is a trained composer and has been commissioned to write for symphonies and chamber groups, possesses guitar chops that can soothe or rage and a charismatic swagger as a frontman and a singer. “Durocher has an impressive range and rich clarity to his vocals—think a more soulful Dan Auerbach” (Connect Savannah). Gentry’s virtuosic bass playing “catapults from elastic to nasty” (The Mountain Xpress). With the addition of Jian-Claude Mears, a drummer with “precision, passion, and an inescapable momentum” (Live For Live Music), the group’s sound has become an unstoppable force. They have been wowing audiences around the country and the Caribbean since their inception in 2011 with an unparalleled live show and a relentless tour schedule.
“I love this song!”
