We are honored to share our passion for our Beloved Black Bears in our exhibit at the “FW Gallery” in Woolworth Walk – downtown Asheville. We are grateful to have been chosen to be their Featured Artists. We want to also thank the many lovely people who work at Woolworth Walk and have supported and assisted us with the exhibit.
The FW Gallery exhibit will end Tuesday, January 29th at 6pm. Our permanent artist booth #229 downstairs “Beloved Black Bear” has over 50 black bear canvases 11×14 at $75 each. We hope you will stop by to visit.
We are happy to say that many black bear canvases have been sold and are now adorning many homes. Our wish is for all of us to share our compassion for the black bear with our friends, family, and neighbors and create connections with the bears giving them a voice.
Love, April Johnson & Jeff Miller

Fireside Collective at 5:30pm
Empire Strikes Brass at 7:10pm
#ResilienceIPA #ButteCountyProud #Butt
Empire Strikes Brass (ESB) is a high energy Brass-Funk-Rock band hailing from the city of Asheville, North Carolina. Formed on the streets of their hometown, ESB is rooted in the New Orleans Brass Band tradition of second-line parades and deep moving grooves reminiscent of old school funk. Combining complex musical arrangements with thoughtful lyrical song structure, ESB can stretch out and dig deep when they are feeling it or keep things tight and concise. The fat sound of the horns paired with one dirty rhythm section makes the music downright psychedelically nasty! Founded in 2012, ESB intentionally stretches the boundaries of the stereotypical brass band paradigm, fusing sounds from various genres and weaving them together with the common thread of Brass. The diversity of the music within their sets keep audiences guessing what is next to come.
Fireside Collective Quickly blazing a name for themselves with their progressive approach to American folk music, Fireside Collective delights listeners with memorable melodies and contemporary songwriting. Formed in the mountain city of Asheville North Carolina, the band plays original songs on stringed instruments, intended for a modern audience. Following the release of their debut album “Shadows and Dreams”, the band hit the road seeking to engage audiences with their energetic live show built on instrumental proficiency, colorful harmonies, and innovative musical arrangements.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. brewed Resilience Butte County Proud IPA to raise funds for those impacted by the Camp Fire. Sierra Nevada will donate 100 percent of Resilience IPA sales to Camp Fire relief and is asking every other brewery in the country to brew the beer and do the same.
Over 1300 breweries responded to the call for support. The brewery established the Sierra Nevada Camp Fire Relief Fund, which will provide much-needed long-term support for community rebuilding efforts. All donations from Resilience IPA will go to this fund. .Additional donations towards this effort can be made here: https://www.goldenvalley.bank/Community-Foundation.aspx
Grab a pint or two, take a photo with Bigfoot, get your dance moves on, and let’s raise money for such a strong community!
THANK YOU to our wonderful brewing community!

? Instructor Sharon Saltzgiver is a dancer, choreographer, and performer. She debuted as a tapping kangaroo at 4 and later earned a dance minor at Bates College. Selected to perform a solo at an ACDF Gala performance, she was also picked as a member of the African Dance Company while studying at the Amercian Dance Festival at Duke University. Sharon performed at venues around Boston’s North Shore with Exit Dance Company and Greg Cole’s African Dance and Drums.
In her own words:
“I dance because it is the language of my soul and my spirit’s power source. Dance is a wellspring of vitality and health, a primal connector of mind, body and spirit through the fusion of music and movement. It’s not about putting someone else’s moves on your body but exploring how your body is asking to express its voice through the choreography.
Through dance you practice authenticity of movement so your physical presence embodies your true spirit. You enter a room truly expressing your essential being and power and divine grace. “

Join Sanctuary Brewing Company and Ben Phan, Guitarist and Songwriter on Thursday January 10th, 2019 for an evening of incredible music by an even more incredible person!
A year of jazz conservatory at Virginia Commonwealth University left Ben Phan rebellious: uninspired by the environment and fed-up with the structure, he knew he didn’t want to be an academic musician.
So Phan began his professional career as a founding member of the Richmond Afrobeat Movement, a blend of jazz, funk and African dance music which earned significant attention in the South, including a TV appearance and other media features.
A stint as Musical Director for Free Run Wine Merchants gave Phan a chance to develop his professional skills, setting up musical events for the company, which included solo jazz gigs as well as band arrangements.
Phan then joined a bluegrass and folk band, the Rusty Strings, and discovered the joy in sitting on a porch and singing together with others, simply for the love of music.
In 2014, Phan decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail and his life changed forever. Along with everything else he needed, he carried a mini-guitar on his back and became known by the name “Shredder” because of how he “shredded the guitar” when he played. Five months of travel on foot, 2,668 miles from the Mexican border all the way into Canada, playing for himself and the people he met, transformed his relationship with music. He began writing songs, drawn from his experiences on the trail as well as his past struggles with depression, addiction, loss and love. The music offered hope and solace, to him and to his audiences.
The time on the Pacific Crest Trail renewed Phan’s passion for music. With a prolific body of original work, he returned to Asheville to record his first solo EP, “Hold On, Let Go.” He assembled a band, made up of some of the best musicians in Asheville: besides liking his music, they appreciate the dedication and professionalism Phan brings to his work. The band released it’s debut album, “Dreams in Modern Folk”, to a sold out crowd at the Altamont Theatre, one of Asheville’s finest listening rooms. The band continued to perform successful shows over the following year, refining their high energy sound which combines fiery improvisation with rich composition. This led to a successful kickstarter campaign to fund their next album, “Fear is the Teacher”, which the band is currently recording with Grammy winning producer Matt Williams. Phan continues to perform with the band, as a solo artist, and in collaborations with other musicians; he has also built a successful guitar teaching practice, which he finds a great source of inspiration.
Phan is a prolific poet, songwriter, and guitarist, with the soul of an improviser. He crafts his songs to give room for improvisation, presence, and self-expression in the moment. He believes that the best live music is when everyone playing is co-creating – which means that every one of his concerts offers audiences a different sound and a unique experience.
