*Assembly Required: Ashevile Designer Toy Expo
Feb 25 all-day
Highland Brewing Company

Adding a Southeast destination for designer toy makers and collectors, *Assembly Required brings designer, bootleg and art toy artists from around the country, to present and sell their work.

Asheville’s premiere designer toy expo, *Assembly Required, is presented by Unboxing Asheville, Morgan’s Comic’s, 103.3 Asheville FM and Appalachian Pinball Museum. Focusing on this artistic movement, designer toys are a form of lowbrow pop art. These toy makers pull inspiration from a variety of subversive segments of culture, as well as subcultural elements, including (but not limited to) comics, tattooing, street art, and everything related to toys of the 60’s through the 80’s.

Echoing production methods of traditional toy manufacturers, designer toys are usually intended to be displayed as collectibles, rather than to be played with. Toy makers mediums range from resin to vinyl, from plastic to plush; with molding, and production techniques such as kitbash, sofubi and bootleg (recently coined ‘Artisanal Action Figure’, by New York Times writer, Rich Juzwiak [11/23/18]). (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/23/style/bootleg-toys-action-figures.html).

Juzwiak interviews such artists as the Sucklord and Killer Bootlegs, both of whom will be present at *Assembly Required.

Chimney Rock Village RiverWalk Trail Clean Up
Feb 26 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Chimney Rock Village

Our iconic RiverWalk Trail in Chimney Rock Village doesn’t stay this inviting on its own. We have to maintain it regularly with limited financial and human resources.
So, if you love this trail as much as we do, and you can spare an hour or two, grab your gloves, shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows. We’ll meet at the entrance to the RiverWalk Trail in Chimney Rock Village (next to the entrance of Bubba O’Leary’s) this Tuesday, Feb. 26th at 9 am to buff up this beautiful, but fragile recreation spot. We realize short notice, but several things fell together very recently where we’ll be able to use some of the equipment from the Chimney Rock Volunteer Fire Department. So, if you can make it, please consider helping us work on the trail for an hour or two – whatever time you can spare is genuinely appreciated!

Fermenting Pickles with Meg
Feb 26 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Hickory Nut Gap

Meg from Fermenti is the master of fermenting! What is fermentation, you ask? To put it succinctly, fermentation occurs when salt-loving (halophilic) bacteria and yeast consume sugar and produce either natural alcohol or natural acids, which in turn preserve food. This is an anaerobic process, meaning it occurs without oxygen. Most importantly, you don’t have to be a scientist in a lab to create delicious fermented foods like pickles and kraut!

Walk away with a firm grasp on basic fermentation principles, as well as creative recipe inspirations and a free fermentation kit to make your own pickles at home! Learn to reduce food waste, cut your food budget, and discover the innumerable health benefits of probiotic rich foods.
