Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) offers a broad line-up of youth athletics programs, adult sports leagues, and special events throughout the year with an emphasis on fair play and enjoyment for any level of experience, including the fall opportunities below.

Asheville’s newest team sports league provides an opportunity for community members over 40 who want to get back into the game or prefer to play with others around the same age. Sign up as an individual to be placed on a team based on height, position, and skill level for games played at Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center.

Instructional five-week clinic with divisions for 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12 year-olds teaches fundamentals through drills and scrimmages at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue with the intent of building a youth softball program in the future.

This introductory course teaches individuals 9-12 years-old range safety and proper shooting techniques.

!Get ready for another season of excitement as our CORE Program gears up to provide exciting games and activities for toddlers, homeschoolers, and families throughout the community this Fall. This includes include strider bikes, yard games, kid-friendly music, puzzles, foam archery, chalk and more. While the games can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age–with something available for anyone–the programming is aimed at those 1 to 15 years of age. Puptart is a tail wagging robot dog who sits and stays, pants when listening, and responds to someone talking to and petting it. It will not jump up or run away, plus it’s fur free, so no sneezes and runny noses coming your way! Every Wednesday afternoon, Puptart will be available for reading practice in the children’s picture book room. Help establish a joy of reading and develop early literacy skills. The Friends of Pack Library will have their Annual Antique and Collectible book sale the second weekend in October at Pack Library in downtown Asheville.
The Oct. 12-13 sale will feature antique and collectible books on the lower level of the library, along with comic books and music CDs. Bookends Used Book Store will have ½ price sale both days and children’s books will be 10 cents each. On the second day of the sale, Oct. 13, everything in the sale will be half off.
On Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., there will be a box sale with a box of books for only $25. Boxes will be provided. Prices in Bookends Used Book Store will return to regular pricing.

Asheville residents can share ideas at a number of stations during drop-in format events. Activities for school age children provided at workshops by APR recreation specialists. An Evening With David Sedaris: The best-selling author and well-known NPR humorist, playwright, and comedian, David Sedaris returns to Cullowhee for An Evening With David Sedaris. With more than 16 million copies of his books in print, Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The October 12th event includes a live reading of new material, time for audience members to ask questions of the author, and book signings before and after the event. Sedaris’ books will be available for purchase at the event through the City Lights Bookstore of Sylva, NC.

Buncombe County Parks & Recreation will be hosting their annual Intellectually & Developmentally Disabled Fishing Tournament at Charles D. Owen Park on Friday, October 13 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. This fishing tournament will provide a safe and unique opportunity for individuals to engage in a fun and inclusive fishing experience, meet friends and enjoy the beauty of the park!
Exciting prizes await the winners of the competition. There will be three categories: Biggest Fish, Most Fish, and Smallest Fish. Each category will each have first, second, and third place winners. Prizes will be awarded based on the participants’ accomplishments and will be announced after the results are finalized.

Over 40 Basketball League, $60 per player
Registration ends August 24, games begin September 12
Asheville’s newest team sports league provides an opportunity for community members over 40 who want to get back into the game or prefer to play with others around the same age. Sign up as an individual to be placed on a team based on height, position, and skill level for games played at Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center.
Flag Football League, $600 per team

Upper, middle, and lower divisions play at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue.

Registration ends September 5, tournament on September 16
Six sets to 21 in pool play for advance and intermediate divisions in which all teams advance to the playoffs on a day of music, fun, and volleyball at Carrier Park.
Intro to Golf, $10 for series with players responsible for their own green fees
Registration ends September 28, games played each Wednesday from October 4-25

Pumpkin Ball Softball Bash Tournament, $150 per team
