The Asheville-Buncombe Air Quality Agency (AB Air Quality) is now accepting nominations for our twentieth annual air quality awards program. The goal of the Clean Air Excellence Awards is to recognize businesses and organizations that have truly gone above and beyond regulatory requirements to improve air quality for the residents of our area. Past years’ award recipients have included Dynamite Roasting Company, Eaton Corporation, and Western North Carolina Veterans Affairs Health Care System; each initiated voluntary efforts that improved air quality in the Asheville-Buncombe County Area.
Award guidelines explain the criteria for the awards and different categories of awards apply to different types of permitted facilities, organizations, and individuals that would like to nominate themselves or another entity for consideration.
To submit a nomination for a Clean Air Excellence Award, please download the application form online and include a brief summary describing what was done to improve air quality for Buncombe County. Examples of voluntary pollution prevention measures include: significant energy efficiency upgrades, switching to more environmentally friendly and lower-emitting solvents and cleaners, installing renewable energy systems, and upgrading fleet vehicles to more fuel-efficient or lower-emitting models. We ask that nominations be submitted to our Agency by April 12, 2024. We encourage you to submit any and all efforts your company (or another company or organization) has undertaken to reduce emissions. Agency staff are available to assist with emissions-related questions.

| Join us for Chamber Challenge training designed for ALL fitness levels with YMCA Personal Trainer Suzanne Ion beginning next Tuesday, March 19th!
These free sessions will be held Tuesdays at 5:30 PM through April 23rd at the Asheville Chamber (36 Montford Avenue). The last session will be a preview run/walk of the actual Chamber Challenge 5k course beginning at the Chamber, winding through historic Montford and finishing in the parking lot once again. These training sessions are open to anyone – whether you’ve registered to participate in the event or not! We recommend you bring your own water bottle. The doors to the Visitor Center will be open 5:00 – 5:30 PM on training days so you can come in to get water and/or use the restroom! Meet in the parking lot in front of the building. Thank you to our Training Partner – the YMCA of Western North Carolina!
Our trainer for the second consecutive year is Suzanne Ion, a sixth generation native of Hawaii who grew up on the island of Maui and in the north Georgia mountains. Whether this is your first 5k or your 500th, you’ll be in good hands with Suzanne. No stranger to health challenges, she lost over 70 lbs. after a debilitating illness with a commitment to interval cross training and a determination to teach again. Her motto is “Someday I will not be able to do this. Today is not that day.” She was the only girl on an all-boys soccer team, ran track in high school, and was a basketball cheerleader and member of the drill team/dance corps in high school and college. Suzanne has Three Star Elite Instructor status for spinning and has continued her fitness education with group exercise certifications through AFFA, ACE, TRX, Silver Sneakers, Mat Pilates, and Tabata Boot Camp. An active participant in 5k’s, 10k’s, half and full marathons, she achieved a Top 20 overall women’s finish at the Lake Tahoe marathon. Whether it’s scuba diving, kayaking, sup, hiking, or glacier climbs, Suzanne is always ready for a challenge. |

Ribbon Cutting: United Way’s Born Learning Trail
Asheville’s longest running comedy open mic happening every Wednesday night. The show starts at 8:00, and there is no cover. Anyone wanting to perform can sign up starting at 7pm, and will get four minutes on stage. Local and not-so-local, professional and not-so-professional comics perform or just anyone wanting to get up in front of people and try to make them laugh. Always fun. Always free.

Asheville Comedy Festival and Highland Brewing Co. Join Forces to Present Comedy Great Tammy Pescatelli in a Special Event, One Night Only on March 21st, 2024, at Highland Brewing’s Event Center.
Tammy Pescatelli, a seasoned and acclaimed comedian, is no stranger to the spotlight. With multiple appearances on The Tonight Show and a notable role in the highly praised Showtime Comedy Special, “Women Of A Certain Age 2,” Pescatelli’s comedic prowess is well-established. Her extensive list of accolades includes co-creating, executive producing, writing, and starring in her own reality show, “A Stand-Up Mother,” on the WeTV Network.
Pescatelli’s comedic journey has taken her to the sets of various television shows, showcasing her talent and versatility. Modelface Comedy brings you the best comedians from all over the country. This Thursday we are bringing the Underwear Comedy Party back to Asheville at Different Wrld
Underwear Comedy Party is a nationally touring show featuring comics telling their best jokes in nothing but their underwear. From thongs to long-johns, there’s no telling what the comics might wear.
What started as a monthly show at the Village Theatre in Atlanta, Underwear Comedy Party hit the road in early 2014. Since then, the show has traveled to over 40 cities and multiple comedy festivals. It was recently named one of the 9 Most Unique Concept Shows in the Nation by Laughbutton and one of the 13 Sexiest Things to do in Atlanta by Thrillist.
All the comedians will be in their underpants, and we encourage the audience to do the same. However in accordance with NC liquor laws titters cannot be fully exposed.

You might also know Ari from the storytelling show he created and hosted on Comedy Central called “This Is Not Happening.” Ari also has a Netflix special called “Double Negative” and a Comedy Central special called “Paid Regular.” Ari Shaffir has also appeared on WTF with Marc Maron, The Adam Carolla show, Your Mom’s House, 2 Bears 1 Cave, Theo Von’s podcast, Andrew Schulz’s podcast, TigerBelly, and many many more. These appearances have made him a favorite in the comedy podcast world. His own podcast, Ari Shaffir’s Skeptic Tank is a chart topper that comes out every week wherever you watch or listen to podcasts. Ari is the reigning president of the LOS podcast to which he has no affiliation. And he placed first in the non-steroid category of the legendary Sober October challenge, which he also destroyed shortly thereafter so he could found Protect Our Parks with Shane Gillis and Mark Normand which he fooled Joe Rogan into hosting.

Award-winning Storyteller Tim Lowry will be joined by special guest Lee Lyons in a show about love, life, and lunacy. Lee is an author and actress hailing from the Appalachian town of Highlands, NC but she’s got roots in the South Carolina Lowcountry and family tree branches that reach back to Ireland. She’s from storied stock. Tim’s got mountain moonshine, South Carolina sea salt, and Scots-Irish DNA running through his blood. Do you need a summer job, internship, or first job out of high school and don’t know where to start? Or maybe you’re nervous about applying for an opportunity or preparing for your first interview? Pack Library will be having a free Teen Job Skills Fair on March 23 to help you get ready to work this summer.
Teens are encouraged to attend any or all of these job skills training workshops led by career development specialists:
- Noon: Dream the Job – Career assessment and job search skills training with Jordan Meeks, Faith Bischoff, and Kristin Kress of NC Works Next Gen.
- 1 p.m.: Apply for the Job – Teen resume and cover letter writing tips and tricks with Caroline Long, Buncombe County Recruiting Manager.
- 2 p.m.: Land the Job – Teen job interviewing skills and mock interview practice with Jimmy Knight, Director of the Cothran Center for Career Readiness at Mars Hill University.

Learn about Asheville’s strange, sometimes sordid past from our ghoulish guides. You’ll laugh! You’ll scream! You’ll discover mysteries and chilling tales of scandal and murder on the blood-stained streets of this picturesque town!
Ghosted runs approximately 60 minutes. Beer and wine are welcome onboard, but no open containers, and absolutely no liquor, please! All beer and wine must be purchased from the LaZoom Room. (Passengers must be at least 21 years old to drink on the bus, and must have valid ID.)

The Asheville-Buncombe Air Quality Agency (AB Air Quality) is now accepting nominations for our twentieth annual air quality awards program. The goal of the Clean Air Excellence Awards is to recognize businesses and organizations that have truly gone above and beyond regulatory requirements to improve air quality for the residents of our area. Past years’ award recipients have included Dynamite Roasting Company, Eaton Corporation, and Western North Carolina Veterans Affairs Health Care System; each initiated voluntary efforts that improved air quality in the Asheville-Buncombe County Area.
Award guidelines explain the criteria for the awards and different categories of awards apply to different types of permitted facilities, organizations, and individuals that would like to nominate themselves or another entity for consideration.
To submit a nomination for a Clean Air Excellence Award, please download the application form online and include a brief summary describing what was done to improve air quality for Buncombe County. Examples of voluntary pollution prevention measures include: significant energy efficiency upgrades, switching to more environmentally friendly and lower-emitting solvents and cleaners, installing renewable energy systems, and upgrading fleet vehicles to more fuel-efficient or lower-emitting models. We ask that nominations be submitted to our Agency by April 12, 2024. We encourage you to submit any and all efforts your company (or another company or organization) has undertaken to reduce emissions. Agency staff are available to assist with emissions-related questions.
