Haywood Waterways is a nonprofit watershed organization based in Haywood County, NC. Our mission is to reduce nonpoint source pollution and improve surface water quality throughout the Pigeon River Watershed. We accomplish this through education and focusing attention on the watershed as a natural, economic and recreational resource to be conserved and enhanced for this and future generations.

We offer a variety of educational opportunities but our premier event, Kids in the Creek, is consistently one of the most memorable experiences students have from middle school. Kids in the Creek is a hands-on learning experience that gets students in the Pigeon River, flipping over rocks and learning about the river’s incredible water quality. We’ve reached 14,000 students in the event’s 21-year history, and the teachers love it and say it helps with End of Grade testing: “Kids in the Creek does more to increase students understanding of water and water quality than anything I could do in the classroom. It has been a valuable learning tool for many years and something the students and I look forward to every year.”

The VIP Champagne Reception is a catered event by the chef of the Renaissance Hotel, featuring passed hors d’oeuvres both savory and sweet, music, champagne and wine. Mix and mingle with friends, reflect on the evening, and meet Tarana Burke!

From her perspective as a survivor and a silence-breaker, Tarana will talk about what it takes to turn a moment into a movement and will inspire us to take action to create a community free from sexual violence.
