We are excited about inviting local and regional actors to come and try out for roles in our simulation events and the production of a series of mini movies called Stories. Our mission at the REAL Academy is to equip social workers with the tools and confidence to make good decisions in child welfare cases. We have seen the benefits of simulation training for social workers and the best way to provide that is using skilled actors to play realistic roles that challenge students before they practice in the community. This is a great opportunity for theatre students and professional actors alike because they will be paid for their work and also contribute to communities across North Carolina.
The One Act Festival is scheduled for June 11-26, 2021. Submissions are free and open to all local playwrights with plays 5-15 minutes long!
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Please limit your cast to a maximum of six actors

Scripts with minimal set, costume and prop requirements are preferred

We are not considering Theatre for Young Audiences at this time
-
We will not accept Screenplays or Musicals at this time
The Magnetic Theatre tends to produce plays that have not received major/recent productions in the Asheville area. We respond primarily to plays with a sure command of language, that are accessible to a diverse and discerning audience, and clear dramatic action that truly uses the resources of live theater.
If you wish to submit a play for consideration, please include a complete manuscript, bio, resume, and any other supporting materials (e.g. reviews) that might help pique our interest in you and your work.

Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. Soon, this naïve newbie falls prey to a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.

The Speakeasy is designed to use improv for positive change through fast-paced play and collaboration. Through teaching the deeper nature of improv, The Speakeasy aims to inspire Artists to stay actively engaged in their craft, grow as individuals, and contribute to the growth of their artistic community. We want our community to have a blast, grow as people, and feel comfortable doing exactly what our name says… speak easy! Instructor Tim Hearn’s approach to both the arts as well as the craft of teaching prioritizes the process of play over the final result. He implements the rules of improv as a philosophy for living and as an indispensable tool for performance.
The first course offered will be “The Fellowship,” Sundays or Mondays at 7:00pm, beginning March 7th and running for 10 weeks. With specific learning targets addressed through a focus on process over product, this course is suited to new students who have never before taken an improv class as well as to seasoned improvisers looking for a new take on familiar techniques. Each week offers a distinct lesson designed to ensure students learn through group experience and active play. Classes will be in-person with enrollment limited to ten students, and all COVID precautions will be observed. Location is TBD.

With fun, on-your-feet activities and games that focus on creative play and improvisation, this high-energy class is perfect for little kids with BIG imaginations.

Through a series of on-your-feet improv games, activities, and creative prompts, young artists will learn to follow their instincts and celebrate their individuality.
Elevate your voice through poetry and prose in an all-new virtual writing and performance class led by professional poet, actor, and improvisor TJ Simba-Medel. In a fast-paced class that celebrates individuality and expression, teen artists will explore foundational writing and performance skills through prompts, group sharing, and private coaching. Silence your inner critic and amplify your confidence as you discover the power of sharing your own unique story.

Dive into the world of theatre design in this introductory course for teens led by CJ Barnwell, Flat Rock’s Resident Lighting and Visual Media Designer. Learn design principles by studying real-world productions, engage with peers in lively discussions, and get creative with a series of artistic prompts (no previous design experience required). Whether you are interested in light, sets, or costumes, this class will give you the confidence, tools, and language to convey your creative ideas!
