Bumpin Uglies with Villanova and LOZ
3.14.2019
$10 @ Bit.ly/TF-BumpinUglies
$15 DOS
+$5 under 21
For nearly a decade now, Bumpin Uglies have been playing their brand of groove-heavy jams – a curiously fun mix of ska, Reggae and good ole’ punk rock – all while putting strong lyrics at the forefront of the music. It’s a formula that quickly took them from local favorites, playing around Annapolis, to a national stage. With a wildly infectious sound, tattoo-worthy lyrics and an itch to take their music to the masses, the band piled into the van years ago and have rarely seen home since.
When they aren’t on the road, they’ve been camped in the studio, churning out four full-length albums, two acoustic albums, three EP’s and a Live record. Their latest, 2018’s Beast From The East came out on Space Duck Records and is proof that the band has found their groove. The album consists of a dozen stand-out tracks, any one of which could be considered instant classics for the band. The album also features some big names in the East Coast reggae-rock community including Ballyhoo!’s Howi Spangler, the Movement’s Gary Dread, Passafire’s Ted Bowne, Tropidelic’s Derek McBryde, Matthew Roads & Young James, Zach Fowler of Sun Dried Vibes and Oogee Wawa’s Jesse Lee. Buzz magazine raves “Beast From The East IS A CAREFULLY CRAFTED PUNK-REGGAE GEM.”
The Bumpin Uglies’ origin story begins with singer/guitarist Brandon Hardesty playing open mics around Maryland. He met bassist Dave Wolf not too long after and Bumpin Uglies was born. With a proper set of wheels and TJ Haslett on drums, they went off to spread their music across the country like modern day Johnny Appleseeds. The group recently added Chad Wright on keyboards, expanding on their sound.
Raised on everything from Bad Religion and The Beach Boys to Sublime and Reel Big Fish, Bumpin Uglies have managed to take inspiration from some of the best out there, run it through their own distinctive filter and end up with a truly original take on the various genres creating an original hybrid. With a unique sound that’s nearly impossible to ignore, the band has gotten everyone from dreadlocked kids to PBR-fueled tattooed punks moving their heads to their music at festivals and on headlining tours across the country.

If you’ve caught shows in Asheville over the last few years with The Milk Carton Kids or Sierra Hull, you are familiar with the powerful bass playing and refined musicianship of Ethan Jodziewicz. On March 14, he returns to town leading his own quartet, playing brand new original compositions falling somewhere between jazz, classical, acoustic music, and pure free improvisation. Featuring fellow virtuosos Mike Seal (electric guitar), Mark Raudabaugh (drums) and Aaron Walters (keyboards). ABOUT The Ethan Jodziewicz Group is guitarist Mike Seal, drummer Mark Raudabaugh, keyboardist Aaron Walters, and upright/electric bassist Ethan Jodziewicz. Brought together in 2017 by their love of the music of Chick Corea and Weather Report, they quickly found a satisfying connection in musical collaboration and improvisation. The group has become a vehicle for Jodziewicz’s original compositions, and spur-of-the-moment group free improvisations, bringing to the Nashville music scene expressive, playful, and virtuosic new sounds occupying the space between jazz, funk, classical, and free music. As individuals they have worked with a long list of jazz and acoustic music luminaries including The Jerry Douglas Band, The Jeff Coffin Mu-tet, Ike Stubblefield, Béla Fleck, Bernard Purdie, Jeff Sipe Trio, Sierra Hull, Fred Wesley, Howard Levy, Bobby Lee Rodgers and The CodeTalkers, Donna The Buffalo, Colonel Bruce Hampton, and more. Calling on these years of experience on the road and in the studio, The Ethan Jodziewicz Group focuses on pure musical communication and connection, with striking compositions, sounds, and grooves to be enjoyed by music-lovers and musicians alike.

It doesn’t get much better than Todd Hoke at Sanctuary Brewing Company! Join us for an evening of music and laughter Thursday March 14th, 2019 @ 7 PM! We Love Todd Hoke and know you will too!
Todd Hoke was born in Conroe, Texas (just north of Houston), lived in Austin for a dozen years, and currently pays his utility bills on time in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Todd Hoke has 2 dogs and a wife. Todd Hoke has recorded & released 3 albums of music covering a wide array of topics, styles, and moods in the process. Todd Hoke has played a lot of shows. Some were utterly fantastic and some landed somewhere south of that. Blah blah blah…This is dull. How about this:
Todd Hoke has never been in a barfight but he has provided music for one. Seriously.
Todd Hoke is charmed by shiny objects.
Todd Hoke very much enjoys wearing his flipflops in situations where close-toed shoes are the expectation. Weddings, funerals, courthearings, whatever.
Todd Hoke very much wants to live in a world where strangers spontaneously burst into song. In harmony.
Todd Hoke is puzzled by pleated trousers.
Todd Hoke thinks the Blue Jays really have a shot at going all the way this year. Unless they face off against the Bears and/or Pirates. Blue Jays have no defense against Bears and/or Pirates.
Todd Hoke was kicked out of the green room at Austin City Limits shortly after saying “Excuse me.” to Eric Clapton. Todd Hoke has been exceedingly rude to rockstars ever since.
Todd Hoke is learning Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” on ukulele.
Todd Hoke wears a size 13.
Todd Hoke may someday learn to tapdance. Or Todd Hoke may not. That’s how Todd Hoke is.
Todd Hoke had one grandmother named Jewel, another named Pearl, and still has an uncle named Punky who wishes everyone would call him Walter instead.
Todd Hoke earns his rent and beer money as a hospice nurse.
Todd Hoke probably couldn’t live off guacamole, but he would be willing to participate in a study to find out. For serious.
Todd Hoke very much likes Townes Van Zandt, Leon Redbone, Guy Clark, Tom Waits, and Louis Armstrong. Todd Hoke is also quite fond of his mother. And fried chicken.
Todd Hoke does not sing songs about rainbows, unicorns, or dolphins. Elves nor fairies neither. It’s good to know this up front about Todd Hoke.
Todd Hoke has a peculiar fondness for his denim jacket.
Todd Hoke (the one we’re discussing here) may or may not be the Todd Hoke doing flips on a wakeboard on Youtube.
Todd Hoke finds brussels sprouts most loathsome among vegetables.
Todd Hoke donates 100% of money from his CD sales to charity. Because Todd Hoke is a very nice person. Just like his mother says.

Laura Blackley and the Wildflowers
Pisgah Brewing Company Taproom Stage
Thursday March 14th | 8pm | FREE
Food Truck: Out of the Blue Peruvian Fusion Cuisine
——————————-
Laura Blackley is a singer, songwriter and purveyor of high lonesome Appalachian blues and soul. She was an on-air host and producer for seven years at WNCW 88.7 FM in Spindale, NC, spotlighting regional music, women in roots music, and bluegrass and old-time. She currently works (in addition to her gig schedule) as a Teaching Artist with Musicworks!, a program that utilizes music and musicianship to teach life skills to young children. A born storyteller, she has played in many bands, traveled many back roads and interstates and enjoys digging up old tunes and hearing the stories behind them. She believes that music has a healing power and is a communal act, and is very much looking forward to the next gig.
The Wildflowers are Ian Harrod on bass and vocals, Josh Gibbs on lap steel, @Richard Foulk on drums. And sometimes awesome guests like Lyndsay Pruett on fiddle and Dorsey Parker on ‘lectric guitar.

Tank and the Bangas
plus Maggie Koerner & Alfred Banks
Show: 8pm
Doors: 7pm
$22 – $25
Ages 18+
Tickets & Info: www.theorangepeel.net/event/tank-and-the-bangas/
Coming from New Orleans, Tank and the Bangas are surrounded by plenty of grand musical traditions. And the five-piece group has a rare knack for combining various musical styles—fiery soul, deft hip-hop, deep-groove R&B and subtle jazz—into one dazzling, cohesive whole that evokes the scope of New Orleans music while retaining a distinctive feel all its own.
“It’s music that can’t really be put in a box,” says singer and poet Tarriona “Tank” Ball. She fronts the band with vivid charisma that helped Tank and the Bangas win NPR’s 2017 Tiny Desk Concert Contest by unanimous acclaim, standing out among 6,000 entrants because of what Bob Boilen called “the depth of their lyricism and the versatility of their players.” Those same qualities also attracted the attention of Verve Records, which has signed the band.
Ball’s lyrical depth has been years in the making. She came up in the strong local slam poetry scene before meeting her bandmates: Merell Burkett on keyboards, Joshua Johnson on drums, Norman Spence on bass and synth keys and, eventually, Albert Allenback on alto sax and flute. “Growing up, I always could sing, but I wrote better than I sang, so I focused on writing,” she says. After her team won the National Poetry Slam Championship two years in a row, Ball turned her full attention to Tank and the Bangas.
What started as a loose collaboration at an open-mic night in 2011 has grown into a mesmerizing musical force that’s only picking up speed. After a featured set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival early in the band’s career, the musicians built a reputation outside their hometown by grinding it out on the road, honing their live show and releasing the 2013 album Think Tank, all the while converting audiences into passionate fans and garnering critical acclaim, from the New Orleans Advocate to The New York Times. “It made us work hard,” Ball says of playing Jazz Fest. “It made us want to feel deserving of it.”
Their hard work is paying off: The Huffington Post says Tank and the Bangas defy description onstage, adding, “It’s music that you have to experience.” The experience is subject to change from one night to the next.
“One show will feel very electronic, or hip-hop, and another show will feel slow and vibe-y and jazzy, and then another show will just be poetry and off-the-cuff riffs,” says Johnson. “As a band, we don’t like to hear ourselves do the same thing for too long, so we might change a small thing here or there, and if we change enough small things, it seems like a big change.”
Tank and the Bangas won the Tiny Desk contest with “Quick,” a riotous single they released in 2017 (and soon accompanied with a cheeky, not entirely safe-for-work video). There’s more new music where that came from as the group works on the follow-up to Think Tank. “It’s going to be awesome,” Ball says. “It’s going to be fun, and a little vulnerable at the same time.”
The band’s ongoing evolution involves more than just music: Ball continues to grow and develop as a performer and writer. Even back in the open-mic days, she was a force of nature. “I don’t know if there’s such a thing as too free, but it was totally uninhibited. She was inspired,” Spence says, laughing at the memory. More recently, Ball has become less of a dervish onstage—“I was running around so much I didn’t have time to sing at all,” she say—while finding new ways of expressing herself as a writer.
“I don’t just think about myself when I write now,” she says. “Just being with my bandmates taught me to think more about other people. And when you have an audience of people ready to listen to you, you’re excited to connect with them, you really are.”

Adding a Southeast destination for designer toy makers and collectors, *Assembly Required brings designer, bootleg and art toy artists from around the country, to present and sell their work.
Asheville’s premiere designer toy expo, *Assembly Required, is presented by Unboxing Asheville, Morgan’s Comic’s, 103.3 Asheville FM and Appalachian Pinball Museum. Focusing on this artistic movement, designer toys are a form of lowbrow pop art. These toy makers pull inspiration from a variety of subversive segments of culture, as well as subcultural elements, including (but not limited to) comics, tattooing, street art, and everything related to toys of the 60’s through the 80’s.
Echoing production methods of traditional toy manufacturers, designer toys are usually intended to be displayed as collectibles, rather than to be played with. Toy makers mediums range from resin to vinyl, from plastic to plush; with molding, and production techniques such as kitbash, sofubi and bootleg (recently coined ‘Artisanal Action Figure’, by New York Times writer, Rich Juzwiak [11/23/18]). (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/23/style/bootleg-toys-action-figures.html).
Juzwiak interviews such artists as the Sucklord and Killer Bootlegs, both of whom will be present at *Assembly Required.
