Corey Smith, the fan-made man, has sold over 1 million concert tickets, 1.5 million digital singles and over 220,000 albums. Smith has amassed an unfailingly devout fan base, not only in his native Southeast region, but all around the nation, simply by telling it the way it is. He has released 10 albums—including 2011’s Top 20 release The Broken Record. Corey has written every word on every album himself and he produced 9 out of 10 of the records. In Summer 2015, Corey teamed up with producer Keith Stegall (Alan Jackson, Zac Brown Band) for his album, “While the Gettin’ Is Good,” which was released on Sugar Hill Records. Smith’s concerts, which were documented on his last live record, Live in Chattanooga, regularly sell out, with audiences singing along to such fan favorites as the coming-of-age anthem “Twenty-One,” the nostalgic time warp “If I Could Do It Again” and the group hug “I Love Everyone.” Corey consistently tours, hitting around 120 dates per year and has begun releasing singles from his upcoming project, the Great Wide Underground.
On Thursday, April 25, 100+ restaurants in Asheville & WNC will donate 20% of sales to the Western NC AIDS Project to support their mission of HIV Prevention & Care in our local community. Join us to kick for a cause! All proceeds go to the Mountain Child Advocacy Center which provides free counseling, advocacy and education for children who have experience abuse, neglect or other trauma. Non members can sponsor a member or come kick for a $10 donation!

Founding father and master inventor Benjamin Franklin was also a pioneer of self-improvement. In 1727 Franklin formed the Junto, a weekly mutual-improvement club made up of a group of his peers and fellow Philadelphia tradesmen to discuss 13 core virtues and explore how to better incorporate them in their lives – and use them as a foundation for enriching the world. The club became the launching pad for all sorts of civic initiatives: the public library, the post office and the volunteer fire department, which have had a lasting impact on society.
Join us while we gather to discuss the 13 virtues in the context of the present day. We’ll meet weekly for 13 weeks and commit to making better and more conscious choices about our own behavior and work with others to spread those virtues through acts of kindness and good deeds. There is no cost and it is open to all!

Taoist Tai Chi® grew out of this tradition and is a way to develop a body that is strong, yet supple, balanced and energetic, a mind that is calm and clear, yet creative and dynamic, and a spirit that is light and peaceful, yet resilient. Taoist Tai Chi® exercises the whole physiology including muscular, skeletal, and circulatory systems, as well as tendons, joints, connective tissue and organs. Rather than depending on the development of hard muscle tissue, Tai Chi develops a body that is relaxed and strong at the deepest levels. The gentle internal movements are balanced throughout the body and have a calming effect on the mind. Taoist Tai Chi® is truly a moving meditation.

Leah Wong Ashburn is a second-generation family owner of Highland Brewing Company and serves as President and CEO. Highland is the largest brewery native to NC, the largest family- owned brewery in the Southeast, and Asheville’s beer pioneer – it was the first brewery in Asheville since Prohibition. It was founded in 1994 by Leah’s father, Oscar Wong. Asheville now has over 30 breweries, ranking at or near #1 in breweries per capita in the US.
Leah grew up in New Jersey and mostly in Charlotte, and is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Journalism.
She asked for a job at Highland soon after graduation and was declined – by her father. Eight years later she got the offer, but her career in Charlotte has taken off. This time, she turned him down. Another eight years passed and Leah joined the company in 2011, moving from sales to marketing to administrative leadership. Under her leadership, Highland’s beer portfolio has seen a revolution while original favorites reflect timeless flavors and quality. Earlier this year she led a brand refresh to position the company for the future.
Leah is married to Brock, Highland’s Engineer and VP of Operations, is a stepmother to two amazing young women, and has two cats who can do no wrong.

“Science on the Move: a science enrichment program for children of migrant farmworkers in Buncombe County”
North Carolina ranks sixth in the nation for its population of migrant farmworkers. Farmworker children are one of the poorest and most vulnerable socioeconomic groups in western North Carolina, with school dropout rates four times higher than the national average. We will discuss the first year of our 3-year collaboration with Buncombe County Schools Migrant Education Program to bring science and multimedia enrichment programming to local middle and high school migrant students.
Library Brown Bag Talks are free and open to UNC Asheville students, faculty, and staff as well as the Asheville community. Feel free to bring your lunch. Light refreshments are always served.
For questions or comments about Library Brown Bag Talks, please contact Gene Hyde, Head of Special Collections and University Archivist, UNC Asheville. [email protected] or 828-251-6645

About: Moogfest is the synthesis of music, art and technology. Since 2004, it’s been a forum for the exchange of ideas by artists, futurists, inventors, entrepreneurs, and engineers.
By day, Moogfest is a platform for conversation and experimentation, attracting creative and tech enthusiasts for four days of participatory programming in Durham, N.C. Moogfest is a tribute to analog synthesizer pioneer Dr. Robert Moog and the profound influence his inventions have had on how we hear the world over the last 60 years. The exchange between engineer and musician that he fostered is celebrated by understanding the creative process as a collaboration across time and space, in commerce and culture.
