We will discuss basic wildcrafting ethics and reciprocation: what can we give back? Good footwear and a hand lens (if you have one) are useful.

Appalachian Spring Conservation Celebration – 5 pm to 8 pm

Join us in honoring the 2019 Stanley A. Murray Volunteers of the Year.

In 1989 the Stanley A. Murray Award for Volunteer Service was created to honor persons who have made outstanding volunteer contributions to the work of SAHC emulating the lifelong dedication of our founder, Stanley A. Murray.

This year, we honor the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club for its extraordinary volunteer help to SAHC in 2018 managing Golden-winged Warbler habitat around our Grassy Ridge “Birdhouse” property. TEHCC members made numerous trips to the Grassy Ridge property to open up 2.5 acres of new habitat for Golden-winged warblers. They donated fuel, equipment, and more than 383 hours cutting locusts on the property, then spent another 403 hours de-barking and transporting the locust to be used in repairing sections of the Appalachian Trail across the Roan Highlands. In addition, several members of the club participated in trail planning and building on our Elk Hollow preserve.

Appalachian Spring Tickets:
$35 member, $40 non-member, $50 at the door. $25 Student/AmeriCorps

Arboretum Reads “The Nature Fix” Book Discussion
May 16 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
The NC Arboretum

SAHC and the North Carolina Arboretum are teaming for a series of events about nature’s influence on you! This series will focus on how time in nature affects your brain, health, and creativity. You will learn about the many international scientific studies on nature’s influence on our bodies, the impact of five minutes verses five hours of nature immersion, and how sensory awareness can deepen your natural experience and its benefits.

Jump start this series with us by joining The Arboretum Reads Book Club in discussing “The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative” by Florence Williams. The book dives into completely new research, where Williams uncovers the powers of the natural world to improve health, promote reflection and innovation, and ultimately strengthen our relationships. With modern life shifting dramatically indoors, these ideas – and the answers they yield – are more urgent than ever. Access to research, related materials, and chapter summaries will be provided in advance of each discussion session. Read along or come with the chapter notes and dive into the discussion!

May Book Club Discussion: Chapters 1-4
Thursday, May 16th; 5:30-7 p.m.

Dance is a wellspring of vitality and health, a primal connector of mind, body and spirit through the fusion of music and movement. It’s not about putting someone else’s moves on your body but exploring how your body is asking to express its voice through the choreography.

Defenders is excited to announce the launch of our 2019 seasonal series: Wildlife Workshops & Walkabouts!

In this fun and educational series, you’ll have a chance to learn about your local wildlife and the habitat on which they depend. These lectures and hands-on activities will get you out into the great outdoors to discover the amazing world around you.

Our first event celebrates the salamanders of Southern Appalachia. Join us and special guest presenter, herpetologist and salamander expert R. Graham Reynolds, PhD on Thursday, May 16th to learn about the salamanders of our area – including rare and imperiled species such as the hellbender and green salamander – why they’re important and how we’re addressing conservation challenges they face.

Following his presentation, we will learn how to create backyard salamander sanctuaries of our own. Then, join us on Saturday, May 18th for a walkabout in Rocky Fork State Park, TN. We’ll look for salamanders and explore this important area that supports an array of wildlife.

Ecstatic Awakening
May 16 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Homewood

My sweet sisters, lets go on a devotional journey into the mythos of our love and dance wild and free for the health of our connection, mind, body, and spirit. To dance from the center of our essence is to explore throughout all time and the timeless quantum universe. When we gather together in greater numbers, the energy is amplified and our ability to open is enhanced.

This weekly event is dedicated to creating a safe space for all women of all backgrounds and ages to unify in our authentic connection in full support of one another. Lets lift each other up and amplify our love in devotion to our body temples and the infinite creation of existence.

Things you need to know before coming…

This is set up in a similar format as ecstatic dance where there is a drop in before and after the dance. It will have a wave of sound to take us on a journey. Within the dance we respect each others boundaries and feel and look for energetic permission to dance with another.

Come as you are! And what makes you feel comfortable to move your body. Bring your own water and whatever else you might need to for yourself to feel nourished for the dance.

I will have an alter set for each and every dance, so if you wish to place an item on the alter feel free to do so.

The financial offering for the ceremony is a sliding scale of
$8-$10 dollars.

The Dance wave will be 1.5 hours every Thursday evenings (time and location will be announced soon.
