Mixed Harvest: Tobacco in Southern Appalachia, 1870-1950 with Tom Lee
The 2004 tobacco buyout program and the end of the auction marketing system transformed agriculture in Southern Appalachia. Once a standard feature of the Mountain South’s rural landscape, the ubiquitous tobacco patches have largely vanished. Memories of tobacco linger among those who grew, harvested, and sold the golden weed, but over time the memories have grown sparser, disappearing like the barns, warehouses, and other physical reminders of a time when tobacco was king. The story of tobacco, however, is about more than nostalgia or memory. For well over a century after the American Civil War, tobacco shaped the agriculture and culture of Southern Appalachia as did no other commodity crop. Readily adaptable to the demands of mountain agriculture, tobacco provided the region’s farmers with a reliable and remunerative annual cash income, fueled urban development within the region, and bound town and country to the rituals of tobacco growing. Because of its ties to industrialization and to broader trends in the region’s history, the story of tobacco reflects in fresh ways the story of Southern Appalachia and the intricate dance of forces that resulted in a mixed harvest for the region’s people.
A native of Johnson City, Tennessee, Tom Lee graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from East Tennessee State University, received a Master of Arts degree from Wake Forest University, and received a doctoral degree from the University of Tennessee with a specialization in the history of the U. S. South. He has taught at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Roane State Community College, and Hiwassee College, and is currently an Associate Professor of History at East Tennessee State University. In addition to the U.S. history survey, the Tennessee history survey, and the department’s historical methods course, he teaches courses on the South, Appalachia, agricultural history, urban history, and public history. From 2006-2012, he served as an advisor and as the public historian for the Tennessee’s First Frontier Teaching American History Project and served as acting secretary for the Society of Appalachian Historians from 2010-2016.
In 2005, the University of Tennessee Press published his book, The Tennessee-Virginia Tri-Cities: Urbanization in Appalachia, 1900-1950. He is currently working on several agriculture-related articles and projects, and he claims to be working on another book, this one focused on the history of tobacco in Southern Appalachia.
Tom lives in Johnson City with his wife Tamitha and their son David. Tom and Tamitha’s two oldest children, Morgan and Andrew, attend Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Appalachian Evenings are free of charge and all are welcome. The event will be held in the Ramsey Center, which is located inside Renfro Library on the campus of Mars Hill University.
For events that happen before 6pm on a weekday, please park in the lot on Bailey Street just next to the Greenway – across the street from Chambers Gym. After 6pm, visitors may park in any available green or white parking space, even if it is designated “faculty” or “students.”

Circle Round presents BEYOND THE VEIL. The period around Samhain and the descent into the dark part of the year is stamped with themes and myths around the Underworld and the soul’s journey after leaving the incarnate realm of humans. What do pagans/wiccans believe about what happens to the soul after death? What Deities assist with the soul’s journey as it leaves the human realm? How can Pagans/Wiccans honor their beliefs and the beliefs of the deceased in their rites and practices when someone in the community dies? How can those that follow an Earth Religion path protect the Earth and honor the natural cycle of life and death when someone dies? We will discuss all of these topics and more. Love donations for use of space and/or contributions of canned goods for the foodbank are welcome. Presented by Kore, a Second Degree Wiccan priestess of SerpentStone Tradition on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 6-8 pm.
Circle Round is a monthly forum which meets on the third Thursday of each month from 6-8 pm at the Raven and Crone, 555 Merrimon Ave., Asheville, NC. For further info, or if you wish to be a presenter for a future meeting, contact Rhiannon at [email protected].

Momentum Gallery hosts a special reception to celebrate the opening of its highly-anticipated new space located at 52 Broadway Street in downtown Asheville, Momentum on Broadway, on Thursday, November 15th, 6-9pm. A number of Momentum’s Artist Partners plan to be in attendance. The reception is free and open to the public.
For more info, check out this post on our website: https://momentumgallery.com/blog/74/
This event marks the official unveiling of the first phase of renovation, for a 4000 square foot space on the ground floor of the historic, three-story building Momentum acquired earlier this year. Clean lines and a brighter, more open venue await visitors who were familiar with the space previously occupied by Stuf Antiques. Momentum Gallery intends to continue upfitting additional square footage in the building over the coming months while maintaining locations on both North Lexington Avenue and Broadway Street.
Select works by Momentum Gallery artists occupy the new space along with two exhibitions which also open November 15th, Small Works, Big Impact and Casey Roberts – Cyanotype Paintings. The former is an annual curated collection of paintings, sculpture, and mixed media works by gallery artists and special guests. Emotive ceramics, surreal painting, intricate glass curiosities, embroidered foliage, and memento mori come together in a provocative collection of intimately-scaled works by familiar and new gallery artists. Although small in size, these works are nonetheless powerful, conveying the vision and prowess of their accomplished makers and taking on themes of mortality, natural phenomena, and discovery. The exhibition features new works by Samantha Bates, Cristina Córdova, Amber Cowan, David Ellsworth, Hillary Waters Fayle, Amy Gross, Alli Hoag, Ron Isaacs, Kate MacDowell, Kit Paulson, Lawrence Tarpey, and more.
The gallery is thrilled to announce the Asheville debut of Casey Roberts with a one-person exhibition to open the new space on Broadway. Dreamy and contemplative – Roberts’ large-scale cyanotype paintings on paper depict a variety of domestic and wilderness subjects which evoke a still and wonderous world. Subjects the artist often revisits include trees, water, animals, and sky. About these works, the artist comments, “there is an intuitive wisdom in nature.” Through his thoughtful use of silhouettes and selective color, Roberts’ ethereal works, profound in their simplicity, tap into our longing for connection through nature.
Jordan Ahlers is fulfilling his vision of two decades to elevate the Asheville art scene with the opening of Momentum on Broadway. Already a cornerstone in the downtown gallery district, Momentum Gallery (and now Momentum on Broadway) add to the expanding cultural offerings Asheville is currently enjoying. We look forward to seeing you!

“Blending folk and country with a blues edge, the brothers Meadows pack a powerful punch for being just two dudes armed with only a couple acoustic guitars and a harmonica. But their harmonies are the type of stuff only siblings can usually muster and their songs smack of souls much older than their earthly years would let on.”
Ian and Dustin Meadows are the Meadows Brothers. They share that essential brother-band DNA: a telepathic tightness, the ability to stop and start vocal phrases in lockstep, to fall effortlessly into close harmonies, trade off phrases and navigate together the fresh expression of American roots music they create.

An introduction to the fun & exciting Brazilian street dance. Samba owes its rhythm and moves to African dances. The traditional African circle dance with a lone central performer relied on weight shifts, rapid steps, and slides to a 2/4 percussive beat, and a fairly still upper body with arms and hands responding to the hip and leg movements. samba is irresistible, its gyrations richly colored by regional and international influences. Today, it would be impossible to imagine carnival without samba.
