Without our exceptional volunteers, there is no exceptional race event for the community. We thank you all!

Celtic Rock Tuesdays!
Nov 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Triskelion Brewing Company

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.

Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.

Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.

So… Tuesdays… will now be…

Peggy Ratusz has been pulling from the cream of the Asheville music crop since moving here in 2002. This “ruby throated” chanteuse has been a finalist in the International Blues Challenge in 2008, 2010 and 2016. A winner in three categories in the 2016 WNC’s “Best of” reader’s poll (Best Vocalist, Best in Blues and Artist Who Gives Back), she’s opened for Tedeschi-Trucks Band, Geoff Atchison, the Beach Boys and the recently departed Denise LaSall

Eleanor plays a variety of instruments including piano, trombone, guitar and banjo ukulele, but her discovery of the banjo has defined her sound and image. Her unique musical style and prolific writing ability has generated significant attention outside of her bands, as she has won top honors at Asheville’s Songwriting Idol Contest and played on the Grammy Award Winning Song “Mind Over Matter” by Kid-Hop artist, Agent 23 Skidoo..

MATH + BEER at Habitat Brewing
Nov 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Habitat Tavern and Commons

Have you ever felt frustrated, confused, or maybe just downright intrigued by the math work you see your kid doing? If so, join me, The Elementary Math Consultant, for a nerdy evening of fun at Habitat Brewing on November 20 from 7-9pm!

We will…
+ get our hands on all the sweet math tools kids use in elementary school
+ play math games and do math problems
+ learn the importance of the “new” strategies being taught in schools today
+ answer all your questions about Common Core math strategies
+ prepare you to be your kid’s math tutor… think of all the money you’ll save!

Oh yeah… we’ll also drink beer! (If you want to.)

Why am I hosting this?

Many people experience a very real problem called Math Anxiety. It affects lots of parents and teachers, and it has been shown in several studies to be contagious! Walk into almost any classroom, and you’ll immediately be able to notice students with math anxiety.

Parents have great intentions when working with their kids on homework, but they can do more harm than good. Most of us learned math very differently than our kids are learning math today. We were not expected to connect abstract strategies – like “borrowing” in subtraction – to visual or concrete representations of math.

The Common Core standards (and the almost identical NC Standard Course of Study standards) require students to deeply understand math concepts, not just skills. Kids are meant to use reasoning and number sense to figure out problems they haven’t been explicitly shown how to solve. It’s actually pretty awesome!

I would love to show more parents how this works. I want to work with parents who don’t like Common Core math and parents who love it. The more adults in our community who can get together with the end goal of supporting our kids’ math achievement, the better.

Who Am I, Anyway?

By the way, my name is Jeannie Curtis. I have taught grades 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. Most recently I taught 4th grade at Evergreen Community Charter School. I was a Governor’s Teacher Network teacher leader and action researcher for North Carolina in 2014-15 and Teacher of the Year at Evergreen in 2015-2016. Now I am a math specialist and math consultant. I work with teachers and administrators along the East coast to improve math instruction. I work for myself and through an incredible company called Math Solutions.

It is becoming increasingly important to me to improve math instruction right here in the Asheville area. I work with teachers here, and now I’d like to work with parents. Parent support can make all the difference for kids. But for the most part, I find that parents know very little about the Common Core standards and current teaching practices. I’d like to change that!

Oh… I also love beer!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles – Best Thanksgiving Movie Ever!
Nov 20 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co.

OUR THANKSGIVING WEEK TRADITION! Fill up on laughs before Thanksgiving.

It is the best Thanksgiving movie ever, and last year we easily sold out 2 screenings.

This is another hilarious and heart-warming classic movie from writer/director John Hughes. Steve Martin and especially John Candy give one of the best performances of their careers.

TICKET INFO:
THIS WILL SELL OUT! $3.00 tickets are now on sale at our 675 Merrimon Avenue location and also online at our website:
https://www.ashevillebrewing.com/movies/

SYNOPSIS:
Easily excitable Neal Page (Steve Martin) is somewhat of a control freak. While trying to get home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his wife and kids, his flight is rerouted to a distant city in Kansas because of a freak snowstorm, and his sanity begins to fray. Worse yet, he is forced to bunk up with talkative Del Griffith (John Candy), an extremely annoying shower curtain ring salesman. Together they must overcome the insanity of holiday travel to reach their intended destination.

CONTENT GUIDE:
Rated R for language and a brief sexual image.

CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class: Blues w/ Charlie

The music and dance aesthetics of Blues and Lindy share a common heritage as African American artforms which developed from late 1800’s, through the turn of the century, to today. We will be looking at blues in terms of four core concepts: Grounding, Pulse, Polyrhythms, and Lag. We will also talk about the concept of ‘dance idioms,’ specifically the blues idioms of Drag, Struttin, and the Texas Shuffle. Nov 6 — Basics of blues and added vocabulary to build you blues sentences. Nov 13 — Modulation and isolations in blues and an intro to Drag. Nov 20 — Dance control, speeding up, and Struttin’. Nov 27 — The Texas Shuffle and breaking down. This series of lessons will be focused on progressive concepts which will build on one another from week to week. This would be very useful for beginners looking to move up to intermediate or for intermediate dancers to hone their core skills.

“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************

8 pm: Core Class: Beginner Partner Charleston & Jitterbug w/ Sparrow & Jean

This month we will be doing beginner partnered Charleston. Focusing mostly on side-by-side 30s style, we will also add in some jitterbug steps to give your dancing a little more variety and swing. No partner necessary! You’ll get to switch roles and dance with everyone.

“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).
*************************

GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.
