The Parental Tool Box contains the largest array of practical strategies and skills assembled in one book for parents and clinicians. The latest research in attachment theory, neurobiology, and evidence-based therapeutic strategies and interventions are integrated into three major sections: The Power of Words, Relationships, & Change and Personal Development. The content of the chapters teaches ways to avoid power struggles by creating a family environment of mutual respect. The comprehensiveness of The Parental Tool Box makes it an ideal ongoing resource which helps parents effectively deal with any problematic behavior. Written in a strength-based and practical manner, each chapter includes Home Improvement Projects to practice the skills introduced. Each tool is examined through The Three Rs: Reframe, Replace, and Rewire. This breakthrough perspective reframes attitudes, replaces undesirable habits, and rewires the biochemistry/neurology to make lasting changes. The Parental Tool Box is written by two professionals who have each had over 40 years in the field and have practiced all of these tools in real time with both typical and highly challenging youth and families. It contains a vast library of verbal strategies, clear and concise social skills, and relational exercises presented in easy to master formats. Written in a descriptive and specific manner for all parents to understand; it is both a skills manual and a comprehensive parenting resource. Clinicians can choose any chapter and use it with parents, children, and adolescents as a tool in the therapeutic process. For parents, each page is finely crafted to help turn the hard work of parenting into a joyful and rewarding experience. It is extremely useful for therapists working with parents of children in out-of-home placements and those working in intensive in-home treatment. Educators can adopt The Parental Tool Box for use in their classrooms or use its content to improve the learning environment with their students. Additionally, the contents of this book have been used for many years successfully in parent training programs. This book will transform the parenting experience, providing tools for creating a successful relationship between parents, children, and adolescents. Additional resources (podcasts, blogs and more) are available at https: //theparentaltoolbox.com.
We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here. Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you. Make sure you write your preferences in the comments if you purchase online.

Patrick Dodd, a fan-favorite contestant from The Voice, will be joining us every Thursday to rock out with his band and the occasional special guest. Swing on by the Tasting Room for some southern-styled rock and jam influenced tunes, $3 pints of Highland Pilsner, and a limited small batch brew that we like to call For the Love of Dodd!
About Patrick Dodd
After years of honing his chops on Beale Street in Memphis, TN, Native Memphian, Patrick Dodd was recently thrust into the national spotlight as a contestant on NBC’s The Voice. Viewers loved his signature rasping growl that echoes with soul and heartfelt rocking rhythm that Dodd displayed on stage for a worldwide audience to hear! Viewers cried “Foul” when Dodd was eliminated from the show and demanded that he get on the road and tour.
Patrick and his band have been influenced by such gifted players as Gregg Allman, The Black Crowes, The Black Keys, Gov’t Mule and Derek Trucks along with soul icons like Steve Wonder and Ray Charles. The group gets every room moving, from the first note to the final guitar flourishes.

The Snowbird Day School evolved from Quaker-led initiatives in the late 19th century to educate young Cherokee Indians living in Tuti yi, a Native community in Western North Carolina. By the early 20th century, the school was administered by the federal government via the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and as with most federally-run schools for Native students, it sought to assimilate Indian youth into white, Anglophone culture. Over the course of nearly seven decades, an estimated 550 students attended the school before it was closed in 1963 due to federal desegregation efforts.
Trey Adcock, an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and Whiting Foundation Public Engagement Fellow, is working in partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to collect and preserve oral histories, mainly in the Cherokee language, to tell the story of the Snowbird Day School. As a collaborative, tribal-led initiative, Tuti Tsunadelogwasdi Uninohelv (Stories of the Snowbird Day School) will bring Cherokee communities together to reflect on their history, document the experience of cultural transition, and contribute to the preservation of their language.
Adcock will be joined by Gilliam Jackson (Project Co-Coordinator) Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Jackson grew up in the Tuti Yi community where he attended the Snowbird Day School. Currently, Gil is a lecturer in Languages and Literatures at the University of North Carolina Asheville where he teaches Cherokee Language courses and resides on tribally controlled lands in the Tuti Yi community.
Trey Adcock is an assistant professor of Education and director of American Indian & Indigenous Studies at the University of North Carolina Asheville. His research interests include American Indian education, Curriculum Studies, and Indigenous methodologies. He also serves on the Advisory Council of the Center for Diversity Education.
Appalachian Evenings are free of charge and all are welcome. The event will be held in the Ramsey Center, which is located inside Renfro Library on the campus of Mars Hill University.
For events that happen before 6pm on a weekday, please park in the lot on Bailey Street just next to the Greenway – across the street from Chambers Gym. After 6pm, visitors may park in any available green or white parking space, even if it is designated “faculty” or “students.”
