Saturday Special Guest-Casey Driessen
Driessen has never taken the standard path in his music career. Described by Zac Brown as “a mad scientist with a five-string fiddle,” the GRAMMY-nominated fiddle player loves to experiment, collaborate, teach, travel, and push the boundaries of not only his instrument, but of what it means to be an independent working musician in the modern music industry.
Currently, that means pouring himself into Otherlands: A Global Music Exploration. Produced, performed, recorded and filmed by Driessen, Otherlands is a travelogue of on-location recordings, short films, and essays documenting musical collaborations through Spain, Ireland, Scotland, India, Japan, and Finland. Driessen undertook this nearly year-long journey with his family, and the results are a 26-episode video series, a 13-song recording of collaborations titled Otherlands:ONE, stories from each encounter, and hundreds of photos.

Newsies JR. is a 60-minute version of the 2012 Broadway musical, based on the 1992 film. Including the now-classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies JR. is a timeless story full of spirit and heart.

NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition will welcome eight finalists to Asheville, NC, for an evening of songs and connection on Saturday, December 3, 2022. The internationally recognized event, now in its 21st year, is one of North America’s premier showcases of emerging performers and songwriters today. NewSong is proud to partner with Citizen Vinyl, a multifaceted event space in downtown Asheville, to present the finale showcase. The 2022 Finalists are: The Singer and the Songwriter (Rachel Garcia and Thu Tran; Oakland, CA ) — Rachel and Thu met and began writing and performing music together in 2006. This year they were named as a finalist in the prestigious Grassy Hill New Folk Song Competition for Emerging Folk Artists at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Cozi Anda Flounder (Cozi and Ezra Vancil; Dallas, TX) — Father-daughter Americana-ish country duo. This self-described cosmic country / Americana-ish outfit sounds itself with a group of lifelong music friends. AC Sapphire (Portland, OR)— Ethereal folk-rock. Her cosmic sound blends disparate elements into an ethereal folk rock while her strong voice shakes listeners awake as she spins her passionate, dust-blasted tales. Indus Adams (San Antonio, TX) — Indie-pop. Indus Adams, aka Devin Castleton, used Covid quarantine to take a deep dive into songwriting and recording. He is currently at work on his debut album. Mikalyn (Guelph, Ontario) — Alt-pop. As an established singer-songwriter her journey had a significant boost when a Brazilian record label discovered her original, piano-driven songs on Soundcloud and offered to transform them into EDM hits, resulting in millions of streams. Justin Cross (Pelham, AL) — Americana. Justin Cross is a singer-songwriter and self-described “noise-maker.” Though his songs are based in American tradition, he hopes they can connect with a global audience. Lua Flora (Evan Button; Weaverville, NC) — Beach-pop. The Asheville, NC-based group’s sun-kissed melodies are rooted in the harmonies of Appalachia, rhythms of the West Indies, and lyricism of American folk. Kristian Phillip Valentino (Asheville, NC) — Indie-folk. KPV’s musical palette falls between the lines of indie folk, singer-songwriter and Americana. His lyrics are a healing balm from the daily struggle as they wash over you with a deep reverence. Kristian was also a finalist at the 2022 LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition, a collaboration between NewSong Music and LEAF Global Arts. The finalists, selected from advance online submissions from across North America and beyond, will bring their musical chops to Asheville to perform, compete, and connect with one another. A panel of music industry judges will select one grand prize winner who will receive a fully funded six-song EP, recorded and mixed at Citizen Studios, plus 500 vinyl records pressed at Citizen Vinyl, and a featured, paid performance at Arts Brookfield’s Summer Concert Series in New York City in the summer of 2023.

Lazybirds is a classic American roots band from the mountains of North Carolina. Specializing in good time music that is just about impossible not to move to, there is also a depth to the band that faithful fans have treasured over the years. According to the legendary Doc Watson, “Lazybirds play a good variety of blues, jazz, and that good old ragtime sound, and you will hear the flavor of that in anything they play.” The ‘Birds cover a lot of musical ground, from early American stringband music to Dylan classics, as well as classic sounding originals, but deep roots are what hold all of these sounds together.
“I’ve listened to the music the Lazybirds play and I think it is a good variety of blues, jazz and that good old ragtime sound and you will hear the flavor of that in anything they play. If you want some good music, have these boys come out and play for you. I guarantee you will enjoy what they do.” — Doc Watson
“From our earliest days bumming around Boone, the Old Crow boys knew it was the Lazybirds who were the best musicians on the scene. Why after all it was the Lazybirds who played those infectious country blues and that feverish hillbilly swing which got all the girls going down on King Street. Back then the ‘Birds played the downbeat for every picking party in town; we listened on in awe to their incredible syncopation, ears pricked to hear the deep body of songs they played, all of us Old Crow boys new in town and hearing for the first time in a long time that familiar tongue of musical kin. ” — Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show)

The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness will host a Friends of Music concert

is warmly invited to attend. Contributions will be gratefully accepted.
Ms. Steinbeck is the Artistic Director of PAN HARMONIA, an Asheville-based organization
committed to sharing chamber music with people of all ages and socioeconomic strata through
accessible, inclusive performances of works by diverse composers.
“Known in the Western North Carolina region and Upstate South Carolina for producing and
performing chamber music, Ms. Steinbeck has shown herself to be a gifted flutist and innovative
concert presenter. We are fortunate to have her for a solo recital at St. John,” said Tipton,
Organist, Director of Music for St. John in the Wilderness and creator of Friends of Music.
Ms. Steinbeck is recognized across the United States and abroad as a unique interpreter of
wide-ranging repertoire, innovative producer and collaborator, enthusiastic teacher and coach.
"What a joy to be making music with Dewitt Tipton at St. John in the Wilderness,” said Ms.
Steinbeck. “He and I connected musically years ago, and it is always wonderful to work with
him. Dewitt's superb artistry was an essential element in the success of Pan Harmonia."
Ms. Steinbeck began playing the flute in a public school music program in Western North
Carolina, where she spent most of her childhood. Musical adventures led her far and wide, from
studies with William Hebert of the Cleveland Orchestra to a Fulbright grant in Belgium, several
years performing and teaching in Germany, and later to graduate studies with Tim Day of the
San Francisco Symphony. As a freelance flutist, Ms. Steinbeck has been featured on many of
California’s most prestigious stages.
In 1997, Ms. Steinbeck moved to Asheville and began raising a family. In 2000, she created
Keowee Chamber Music with cellist Liz Austin and violist Andre Levin. KCM became Pan
Harmonia in 2011. As a teacher, she loves guiding students of all ages to discover the joy of
making music and to achieve new levels of accomplishment and self-awareness. Ms. Steinbeck
has produced two critically acclaimed albums: “Light in the Corner “with percussionist Bryon
Hedgepeth and “Luminescence” with guitarist Amy Brucksch and has recorded on projects
ranging from hip hop to ambient. She loves languages, speaks German and French, and is now
learning Spanish. Ms. Steinbeck plays on a modern wooden flute manufactured by the Abell

Inspired by the music of the Pat Metheny Group, Steely Dan, George Winston, and Kansas, the Asheville-based, Robert Thomas Band has a unique style that defies a specific genre. Audiences will appreciate the smooth and seamless crossover effect the music takes, incorporating jazz, new age, prog rock, and Celtic styles. The keyboard/guitar infused compositions are “seriously” clever, yet familiar, delighting both jazz and non-jazz listeners.
In addition to hearing songs off the their most recent CD, ‘Urban Sunset’(Apple Music, iTunes, and Spotify), the band’s set list often includes covers by the likes of Sting, Bruce Hornsby, and Elton John.
Come enjoy an evening of live music, food and drinks at the Isis. Reservations are highly recommended.

Who says you can’t become a professional musician in your sixties?! Anyone who thinks that hasn’t met singer/songwriter, Bob Jordan, who just released his first CD of 13 original compositions, “If This Dream Stands” with an All-Star lineup for a band, recorded at the renowned Seclusion Hill Music with owner/ sound engineer Phil Ludwig!
Retired English professor, Bob Jordan, who’s played music all of his life, upon retirement set out to write the Great American Novel, but found that nothing came to mind. However, lyrics began to flow from him as if it was destiny, and wonderful original songs came shortly after!
If you like grassroots rock, country, and folk music, then you truly are going to enjoy Bob Jordan’s music! Think Johnny Cash meets Willie Nelson meets The Beatles meets Crosby, Stills, Nash , and you’ve got Bob’s music.
Bob has assembled a true all-star lineup for this project including:
-Bob Jordan, singer/songwriter/rhythm guitar
-Bryan McConnell, bass
-Bill Berg, drums
-Julie McConnell, backing vocals/percussion
-Kelly Jones, lead guitar/backing vocals
-Paul Rene McIntire, violin
-Jackson Dulaney, pedal steel/resonator guitar
-Taylor Pierson, piano
—————
A pianist and drummer before he picked up a guitar, Jordan had played in bands throughout his school years and into his 30s, but set aside professional ambitions to teach. Though he taught writing, it had not occurred to him to write songs until he retired.
Sitting in front of his computer, his first thought was that now he had time to write the Great American Novel. When nothing came to mind, he decided to give lyrics a try, adding the music later.
If This Dream Stands is a project managed and produced by McConnell’s Music. Julie and Bryan McConnell recruited veteran session musicians from the Asheville area for an album that includes 13 of Jordan’s songs, along with a reprise of the opening “Old Black Snake” featuring grandson Henry Stout on vocals.
