Folk Soul Revival

A modern band rooted in old-school southern sounds, Folk Soul Revival whips up its own version of amplified Americana on the band’s self-titled fourth record.

The name says it all. Folk Soul Revival, like the band that created it, is an album that celebrates the sounds, stories, and small-town values of an earlier era, modernizing their approach with sharp songwriting and electrifying instrumental work. There’s country twang, bluegrass bounce, hillbilly hell-raising, chicken-pickin’ guitar, and roadhouse roots-rock, all sandwiched into a tracklist that mixes heartbreak, honesty, and humor in equal doses. Recorded in Nashville and road-tested on stages across the country, this is Folk Soul Revival’s finest work — an album that nods to the glory days of the past while still pushing the band forward.

Formed in southwestern Virginia in 2008, Folk Soul Revival has spent a decade growing a wide audience both at home (where they’ve become a regular presence at local institutions like the Carter Family Fold, FloydFest, and Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion) and on the road (where they’ve shared shows with Dr. Ralph Stanley, Old Crow Medicine Show, Jason Isbell, Eric Church, and others). They’re road warriors, logging roughly 100 performances a year. For Folk Soul Revival, though, those tours always lead back to Bristol: the group’s birthplace, home, and muse. Many of the life lessons that lurk inside Folk Soul Revival’s 12 tracks can be traced back to that place.

“These are stories of home,” says frontman and chief songwriter Daniel Davis, who shares the band’s lineup with Justin Venable (baritone guitar, vocals, occasional songwriting duties), Brandon Sturgill (upright bass, bass guitar), Chad Light (guitar, pedal steel, banjo), and Justin Louthian (drums, vocals). “We’re all backwoods country people who grew up in this area,” he adds, “listening to bluegrass and country. That’s where we come from, and that’s where this album comes from, too.”

With songs about blue-collar jobs, long workweeks, messy breakups, and richly-deserved weekends, Folk Soul Revival sources its material from the everyday lives of rural Americans. This is biographical music, and while the stories may be specific to Folk Soul Revival, they’ll sound familiar to anyone who hails from the country’s forgotten pockets . On songs like “Small Town,” Davis sings about front porches, back roads, and Friday night football games, sketching a picture that’s quintessentially Southern. In the background, the rest of the band chimes in with banjo, slide guitar, and vocal harmonies. The result is both fresh and familiar — a new take on a classic idea.

Elsewhere, the guys duet with folksinger Leah Blevins on “Dance with Me,” wink their way through the double entendres of the country two-step highlight “Horrible Girl,” ride a rowdy groove with the kickoff track “Other Side,” pay homage to Little Feat with a cover of “Willin’,” and even make room for swooning strings and thick harmonies (the latter provided by the McCrary Sisters) on their most layered song to date, “Broken.” Produced by Grammy Award winner Chad Brown (Ryan Adams, Hayes Carll, Patty Griffin) with additional production by Grammy Award winner Barry Bales (a longtime member of Alison Krauss and Union Station, as well as the producer of Folk Soul Revival’s previous album, Out of the Box), these songs shine a light on the band’s strongest lineup to date. Crucial to the group’s soaring progress are two new members — Justin Louthian, a versatile percussionist capable of train beats, rock patterns, and everything in between; and Chad Light, whose electric guitar riffs take centerstage on multiple tracks — whose talents help Folk Soul Revival bridge the gap between the organic punch of a string band and the electrified stomp of a country-rock act.

Released years after the band’s third release, Prompting the Dapperness, rose to Number 12 on iTunes’ country chart and Number 10 on Billboard Magazine’s Heatseekers chart (South Atlantic Division), Folk Soul Revival takes the band to new heights, merging the band’s classic influences and timeless twang with a modern, musical approach. Bring on the revival.

In an ever-evolving universe, the art of maintaining complete and total fluidity is the most necessary key for survival. Renowned for his metamorphic capabilities and expertly crafted sonic adventures, Liquid Stranger has mastered his ability to slip in and out of genres all while honing his own personal style.

Liquid Stranger has earned his reputation for exuding incommensurable talent and taking audiences on a soul-stirring aural journey of genre-bending beats on the dancefloor. He has performed at some of the most innovative events and festivals around the globe including: Shambhala, Bella Terra, Escape from Wonderland, EDC Orlando, Summer Camp, Paradiso Festival, Beyond Wonderland, Inox Park, SXSW, Enchanted Forrest, Elements Festival, Infrasound Equinox, EDC Las Vegas, etc.

In his latest installment, Nomad Vol 2, Liquid Stranger seamlessly blends three tunes- Bounce, Freefall & Zenith- that radiate aqueous harmony, are dripping in luxurious bass and topped off with a splash of funk. The Nomad Series in itself is an excellent representation of Liquid Stranger as an artist as it was created purposefully to push the envelope of genres and create something that could easily satisfy the likes of anyone listening. In accordance to Liquid Stranger himself, “I travel a lot and go through phases of living a somewhat nomadic life style.” He goes on further to explain how much of his inspiration is drawn from these journeys, “and the Nomad series is about taking all these influences and blending them into one sonic stew.”

Liquid Stranger is no alien to the Beatport charts, and has held the #1 spot on numerous occasions and in several different genres including: dubstep, reggae and drum & bass. Over the course of six full-length albums, countless EPS and a plethora of single releases, he’s yielded worldwide hits as diverse as “Ripple” and “Bombaclaad Star”, which reigned supreme as the #1 reggae track of 2011. “Shake My Ass” dominated the drum’n’bass chart at #1, while his third album Private Riot has become a timeless dubstep classic, solidifying him as a force to be reckon with.

In 2015, Liquid Stranger continues to transcend musical dimensions by curating thought- provoking harmonies. This year he has also brought us Wakaan, a label pioneered by Liquid Stranger himself. With the new label he has given free-form compositions and artists a place to thrive. However, what’s next to come is simply unforeseen, as he is a jack-of-all-trades. But one thing is for certain, whatever he brings to the table will be produced mindfully and masterfully to the highest artistic standard.

Those who are unfamiliar with his music often tend to categorize him as only a heavy dubstep artist, which is anything but the truth. The most effervescent quality of Liquid Stranger is his ability to shift from genre to genre all while maintaining a sense of smoothness and consistency, which in turn makes him one of the most unpredictable artists to date. In a sense, he has ended genre barriers for the sake of musical storytelling taking whatever sounds he needs to put forward the intended vibe.

Liquid Stranger’s omnifarious approach to music has led him to stand out amongst a pack of artists desperately trying conform to a commercial demand. Proven to be a timeless staple to the world of electronic dance music by bridging the gap between mellow and heavy, what’s next can not be foreseen for this contrastive musician.

Satsang is a power trio creating a unique blend of soul, folk-rock and hip-hop, Satsang delivers lyrics that come from and are rooted in change, growth, awareness, and imperfection. The live show is everything that the band name suggests: a gathering of people to assimilate and share their truths. The rhythms put forth by the band keep everyone on their feet, and the lyrics leave them craving active and positive change. Satsang has toured all over the country and has shared the stage with the likes of Michael Franti & Spearhead, Steel Pulse, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Trevor Hall, Chris Berry, Mike Love, Jon Wayne and the Pain, Tubby Love, and many more.

Lead singer and songwriter Drew McManus creates music for his soul, fueled by the ever present task of personal growth and the beautiful life that he found in the Beartooth Mountains of Montana. Commenting on his difficult upbringing in Des Moines and residency in Chicago, McManus says, “I grew up in an environment where aggression, violence, abuse, and addiction were always present. It made me a lot of things; angry, sad, and ashamed. I hated my story and I was a slave to addiction. I tried for so long to hide from the reality of my story and the reality of how beautiful life could be.” It wasn’t until an intense spiritual experience lead Drew to break his cycle of addiction. “I had changed my entire outlook on everything” say McManus, “I began to realize that had everything not happened to me exactly like it did, I would not be exactly who/where/what I am right now.” In an effort to share his revelation with others who may be in the same predicament, Drew began to write every day. “I was flooded with the urge to write down the lessons that kept revealing themselves in this surrender. And the connections I began making with other people by making this music vulnerable and open, began to change everything.” These songs are a statement of lessons learned and a further understanding of self. “The whole story is what makes it beautiful, not just the good bits.”

Satsang released their sophomore album Pyramids in March of 2017 and saw it quickly rise to #1 on the Billboard Reggae charts and #2 on the iTunes charts. We also surprise-released a new EP, In Between Another Blink on 12/6 and had it crack the top 20 on the iTunes Singer/ Songwriter chart with no advance promotion. The band spent the majority of the past summer touring in support of Michael Franti, Trevor Hall, Wookiefoot and Nahko and Medicine for the People creating legions of fans from coast to coast.

“For a generation lost in a sea of mindless beats and meaningless words, Satsang is a breath of fresh air. In a time where poetry feeds and stems from rebellion and roots music resurfaces as the anchor for social justice and people powered movements, these kinds of troubadours are imperative for greater change. I am honored to be witnessing these young men hold a torch for positivity and love in the struggle and remind us all that change takes hard work, but together we can preserve a world that we all want to live in.”
– Nahko

” I welcome Satsang warmly to my senses. I’m instantly drawn to the familiar style of singing that devours island radio; caught off guard by harmonic elements. I like this!”
– HIRIE

“Satsang is a Sanskrit word that translates to mean “being with the truth.” Satsang (the band), is a Montana-based trio, creating some of the most exciting underground and conscious music released today. Their Americana style is at times part folk, part melodic hip hop.”
– Rootfire

The Realignment Workshop
Feb 9 @ 8:30 am – Feb 10 @ 4:00 pm
Wellspring Wellness Center

This program is for anyone seeking to grow. The goal of this workshop and the entire curriculum of Consciousness Studies is to create an ever-increasing community of transformed individuals who will transform the world. Listen to Haydn Hasty, President, comments about the workshop here: https://youtu.be/xMZlE44zrPM

DESCRIPTION:

Most of the time people function on the periphery of their lives. The constant focus on survival, money, being loved, and achieving status and success inevitably produces a misalignment that no medication can cure and no therapy can heal. At the same time, it is this very suffering that eventually forces you to examine your life attitudes and gives you an opportunity to change.

This program is an initiation to living a conscious life, moving from the periphery to the center of who and what you really are. When your inner core is off-center, your outer life is out of balance, too. When your inner being is upright and clear, that center can hold in the middle of a storm, in the middle of everyday difficulties. When you are in a state of harmony, you notice that the day-to-day barriers dissipate. You begin to experience freedom and peace.

As you become more conscious, you see that your inner attitude has the power to move outer circumstances. That is what this weekend is all about: resolving everyday challenges through consciousness. Consider The Realignment Workshop as your next step in accelerating your growth and living a conscious life.

Translated from Cherokee into English, the word “Cataloochee” means “wave upon wave.” From the summit hikers will indeed be able to see wave upon wave of Blue Ridge Mountains including other SAHC-conserved properties such as the 8,000 acre Waynesville Watershed (protected in 2005); the Plott Balsam conservation easement protecting the top of Plott Balsam Mountain (2003 and 2006); the Crawford Creek conservation easements at the base of Cold Mountain (2000); and the high ridgetop properties of one of SAHC’s primary farmland focus areas: Sandy Mush, Buncombe County.

Little One-Inch
Feb 9 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Asheville Community Theatre

Our Saturdays at ACT series combines terrific shows for children and their adults with tickets that are affordable (they’re only $7.00)!

On Saturday, February 9, we host Lisa Sturz and Red Herring Puppets for Little One-Inch, a beautiful and magical tale. Lisa shares: “Little One-Inch was my favorite story growing up. My Dad, who was stationed in Okinawa during World War II, passed on to me his deep love of the Japanese language, people and culture. He read this story to me. I was enchanted by the magical elements, inspired by the idea that a little person could achieve great things, and reassured that love can blossom in unlikely circumstances.”

Little One-Inch is the story of an old couple whose prayers are answered when they find a small baby by the side of the road. When he comes of age, tiny Little One-Inch sets off on the adventure of a lifetime where he meets a princess, defends her against a dumbstruck ogre and, for his bravery, grows when the princess uses the ogre’s magical hammer on him.

You may think your child won’t sit still for a 45 minute show, and guess what? Wiggling, whispering, pointing, and exclaiming are all 100% wonderful!
