Boxing at the Depot will host the 2023 South Carolina Golden Gloves Boxing State Championship on February 23-25 at The Memorial Arena at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium (385 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303). Golden Gloves has been contested in the Carolinas since 1934 and nationally since 1928. Boxers will compete for State Championship belts, All-State certificates signed by South Carolina Governor Henry Mc Master, and spots on South Carolina’s Elite High Performance Boxing Team. There will be three competition divisions for men and women: Elite Open (18-40 years old; 11+ prior USA Boxing bouts); Novice (18-40 years old; 0-10 prior USA Boxing bouts); and Masters (40+ years old). Winners of the Elite Open Division will join Team South Carolina and travel to Birmingham, Alabama to compete in the Southeast Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions against the champions from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The winner of the Southeast Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions will then compete in the Golden Gloves National Championship. The following Olympic weight classes will be contested at this year’s tournament:

Flyweight (112 lbs.), Featherweight (125 lbs.), Light Welterweight (139 lbs.), Welterweight (147 lbs.), Light Middleweight (156 lbs.), Middle-weight (165 lbs.), Light Heavyweight (176 lbs.), Cruiserweight (189 lbs.), Heavyweight (203 lbs.), and Super Heavyweight (203+ lbs.).

HRC Adult Pickleball Training

Hendersonville Racquet Club is offering several levels of pickleball training starting February 22nd.  Try Pickleball is a five week series of classes for adult beginner pickleball players. Pickleball 201 is a four week class for 2.5 to 3.0 level players who want to improve.  Pickleball 301 is a four week class for 3.0 to 3.5 level players.

All classes are taught by HRC Pickleball Pros.  Try Pickleball starts February 28th on either Tuesdays 2-3 or Fridays 6-7. The cost is $120 for the five weeks and includes five hours of instruction, a Paddletek pickleball paddle and a pickleball.  Pickleball 201 and 301 start February 22nd Wednesdays at 1pm and 2:30pm, respectively.  The cost is $80 for HRC members and $120 for nonmembers.

“Pickleball is the latest racquet sport craze. It combines elements of several racquet sports including: tennis, ping pong and badminton. It intensifies hand coordination and increases volley abilities. ALL WHILE HAVING FUN!” stated Certified Pickleball Professional Cre Still.

Hear what the experts predict for the economy in 2023. Our presenter, Dr. Harry M. Davis, is the Professor of Banking (1980) and Economist (1981) for the North Carolina Bankers Association. He is professor of Finance and past Chair of the Department of Finance, Banking, and Insurance at Appalachian State University (1981-1998).
As the North Carolina Bankers Association Economist, Dr. Davis puts together quarterly economic forecasts that are carried by various news outlets. Dr. Davis is frequently interviewed throughout the year by newspapers, television, and radio stations for stories on the economy and banking. Dr. Davis is a frequent speaker at state, regional and national banking conventions on economic and banking issues.

Dr. Harry M. Davis is the Professor of Banking (1980) and Economist (1981) for the North Carolina Bankers Association. He is professor of Finance and past Chair of the Department of Finance, Banking, and Insurance at Appalachian State University (1981-1998). Dr. Davis is the past Chairman of the Board of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and continues to serve on that board. He is also on the advisory board for the Western Youth Network.

As the North Carolina Bankers Association Economist, Dr. Davis puts together quarterly economic forecasts that are carried by various news outlets. Dr. Davis is frequently interviewed throughout the year by newspapers, television, and radio stations for stories on the economy and banking. Dr. Davis was also an instructor for the South Carolina School of Banking (2006-2016).

Dr. Davis is active in the consulting field and has presented seminars to business groups both in North Carolina and nationwide. He puts together feasibility plans, business plans and valuations for both financial and nonfinancial corporations. Dr. Davis has served as a consultant for numerous start-up banks in North Carolina. He helped start a local bank in Boone and served on its Board of Directors for over 20 years. Dr. Davis is presently on the Board of Directors of LifeStore Bank in West Jefferson, NC.

2023 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament

The Southeastern Conference has announced a three-year contract with Greenville, S.C. to host the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament in 2023, 2024 and 2025

 

A face value reserved ticket book for the tournament, to be held at Bon Secours Wellness Arena is $130. A ticket book contains seven tickets, one for each session, which allows one person to attend all 13 games. All ticket prices are subject to additional taxes and fees and can be purchased hereSeating for sessions 1-3 is General Admission. Single session tickets, if available, will go on sale in February.

The Madness of March begins in Asheville. The Southern Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships return to Asheville March 2-6, 2023. The SoCon Basketball Championships produce some of the first tickets punched to the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments. Institutions that make up the Southern Conference are The Citadel, East Tennessee State University, Furman University, Mercer University, UNC Greensboro, Samford University, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Virginia Military Institute, Western Carolina University, and Wofford College. The Men’s Championship will consist of 10 teams participating in games from March 3-6. The Women’s Championship will consist of 8 teams participating in games on March 2,3 & 5.

Summer Day Camp is a great option for kids ages 9-17 with any skill level to learn and practice on the iconic rivers and lakes of Western North Carolina. Paddlers from beginner to advanced will receive high-quality instruction from our elite team while having fun and making friends.

The Southeastern Conference has announced a three-year contract with Greenville, S.C. to host the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament in 2023, 2024 and 2025

 

A face value reserved ticket book for the tournament, to be held at Bon Secours Wellness Arena is $130. A ticket book contains seven tickets, one for each session, which allows one person to attend all 13 games. All ticket prices are subject to additional taxes and fees and can be purchased hereSeating for sessions 1-3 is General Admission. Single session tickets, if available, will go on sale in February.

Beginner Youth Tennis Classes

Hendersonville Racquet Club

Registration is now open for the next session of youth tennis classes starting March 3rd at Hendersonville Racquet Club.  Kids are put in groups based on age and ability with seven levels available.  The session is six weeks long and is $79 for members or $99 for non-members for one class a week.  Two days a week (12 sessions) is $139/169.

“Our youth tennis program has something for any child who wants to play.  From beginner to high performance player, we put them into situations where they will be challenged and can succeed while having a fun time doing it.” stated HRC Junior Tennis Academy Tennis Pro Cre Still.

Hendersonville Racquet Club is a six acre complex that includes 6 outdoor tennis courts, 3 arena tennis courts, four racquetball courts, 7 pickleball courts, an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, group fitness room and outdoor leisure area by Shaw’s Creek and pond.

The Madness of March begins in Asheville. The Southern Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships return to Asheville March 2-6, 2023. The SoCon Basketball Championships produce some of the first tickets punched to the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments. Institutions that make up the Southern Conference are The Citadel, East Tennessee State University, Furman University, Mercer University, UNC Greensboro, Samford University, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Virginia Military Institute, Western Carolina University, and Wofford College. The Men’s Championship will consist of 10 teams participating in games from March 3-6. The Women’s Championship will consist of 8 teams participating in games on March 2,3 & 5.
