The beginning of the year is a great time for Ashevillians of all ages to explore, connect, and discover with Asheville Parks & Recreation. Now is the time to take a look at winter and spring offerings in the new activity guide with registration dates, information, and listings for hundreds of fitness and active living classes, sports and clubs, arts and culture programs, out-of-school time activities, outdoor recreation, and more.
The latest winter-spring edition of Asheville Parks & Recreation’s activity guide can be found online or at community centers across the city. Community members may also download the new AVL Rec app for iPhone or search programs on AVLrec.com.
Winter-Spring Guide highlights
All opportunities and events are free to Asheville residents unless noted.
- Afterschool programs with homework assistance, games, arts projects, and more are divided into three age groups: kindergarteners through fifth-graders, fifth- and sixth graders, and sixth- to ninth-graders.
- Fitness center memberships at Stephens-Lee and Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Centers feature free weights, exercise machines, and cardio equipment.
- Celebrate Black history with events, including a soul food supper, pie baking contest, community cleanup on Burton Street, movies, and a pop-up Black history museum.
- Glow-in-the-dark basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, laser tag, and climbing.
- Adaptive and inclusive exercise classes, drop-ins, afterschool programs, tennis, and archery as part of the therapeutic recreation program. Noncompetitive basketball and baseball leagues teach the basics with an extra emphasis on fun for $40 per player.
- Festivals and special events include a Valentine’s Dad and Daughter Dance, Mardi Gras party for older adults, and Truck City 2022.
- The Asheville Fit 50 Challenge encourages all community members to stay active by walking, running, or rolling 50 miles on their own schedules between February 1-April 1. It’s a great way to prepare for events in the spring including Track 10K Challenge, Carrier Park Relay Race, and WNC Nature Center’s Running of the Goats 5K.
- Boyz 2 Men and All About Me are clubs for boys and girls, respectively, that meet monthly to take field trips, throw afterparties, host sleepovers, play games, volunteer, and more. Fee, if any, is based on activity.
- Learn something new, like healthy Latin eating (taught in English and español), basic vehicle care, painting, and more.
- Outdoor programs for all ages feature hikes, biking, paddling, archery, disc golf, and making lures for fly fishing.
- Check out weekly opportunities for retirees and older adults to line, tap, and folk dance; play games like canasta, Mexican Train dominoes, and billiards; and socialize through woodworking, sewing, and writing clubs. Low-cost clay sculpting and weaving classes are also a great way to socialize and hone a skill.
- Competitive and recreational sports include dodgeball, softball, baseball, flag football, and sand volleyball for all ages. Open gym times for pickleball, volleyball, and basketball are available throughout the week. Club sports include rugby, lawn bowling, ultimate, inline hockey, cycling, lacrosse, and disc golf. Prices vary.
- Events for dogs and their human companions include Smooch Your Pooch social media celebration at Azalea Dog Park, St. Waggy’s Day at Burton Street, and Southside Bark Park pop-up.
- Summer camp registration begins at 6 p.m. February 7. These spots go quick, so mark your calendar!

Holistic Crop Management aka CNG’s Bootcamp South, is a six-part webinar series led by local farmers and agricultural resource specialists. Beginner’s workshop lesson at 7:30 P.M., then 8-11 P.M. Contra Dance with Country Waltzing at the break and the final dance. This is a partner dance but it’s not necessary to come with a partner. We have different live bands and callers.

The upgraded playground is part of a series of improvements the county has made at Owen Park over the last couple of years, including the addition of a GaGa ball pit, outdoor exercise equipment, a musical “garden,” a wheelchair-accessible swing, and a TRACK Adventure Trail that teaches kids about the flora and fauna that can be found in the park.
Owen Park is located at 875 Warren Wilson Road (behind National Wiper Alliance). In addition to the amenities listed above, the park boasts several reservable picnic pavilions, a fishing pier, basketball courts, baseball fields, and a level, 1-mile walking path around the ponds. Owen Park is truly a gem in our community, and it keeps getting better all the time!

Over a period of several weeks in January, the old playground — which was very small and suitable only for young children — was removed and replaced with a large, state-of-the-art playground, complete with climbing walls, multiple slides, a 4-person seesaw, and much more. The colorful new playground equipment is designed for children ages 5-12, and makes quite a visual splash as you drive into Owen Park.

Holistic Crop Management aka CNG’s Bootcamp South, is a six-part webinar series led by local farmers and agricultural resource specialists. This workshop explores the tension between lyrical and narrative elements in flash. We will revise our stories to achieve the “iceberg effect.” The instructor will also share flash fiction resources, publications, and contests where you can submit your work. NOTE: This session works best if participants bring one or two stories, though this is not required. Flash fiction is a dynamic genre, and though it is not new, flash has become popular in contemporary literary culture. With the rise of social media and short attention span readers, as well as the form’s unique ability to double as prose poetry, publishing opportunities for flash fiction abound. In this workshop series, we will focus on the intensity of the short prose form as “illuminated moment.” Through prompts and exercises, we will practice writing and revising a variety of flash stories. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own flash stories for feedback, as well as read and discuss selected works as models. The classes may be taken individually or as a series. Beth Keefauver earned her Ph.D. in English and Creative Writing at the University of Tennessee, where she specialized in contemporary fiction, environmental literature, women’s studies, and served as a fiction editor for Grist. Her work has appeared in numerous national publications. Beth currently teaches creative and professional writing, environmental literature, women’s and gender studies at the University of South Carolina. While this is a soft open, the park features two fenced-in play areas; one for large dogs and one for smaller pups. “We do have plans to add other amenities and water fountains,” exclaims Recreation Services Program Coordinator Mac Stanley. “People are very excited about this new opportunity. Since it was announced, we have gotten letters of support as well as many emails questioning when will the project be completed.”
So join us in a round of apaws as we celebrate the opening of this new venue for hot dogs and cool people. “It’s an amazing place to bring your dog to run free without a leash and interact with other dogs,” says Stanley. “One of my favorite aspects of this new dog park is being able to cultivate a community. Hopefully, this dog park will be instrumental in connecting dogs as well as people within the community.” Paw-yeah, sounds great.

- Pick up poop and dispose of it in receptacles provided
- Be liable for any and all injuries caused by their dogs
Not Allowed:
- Pronged, spike or choke collars
- Aggressive dogs, aggressive humans, or dogs in heat
- Unsupervised children 12 years of age or younger
Recreation Services’ Lake Julian Park Rangers have assembled a new paddle boat fleet that is ship-shape and ready to hit the water. “We have received and assembled 17 brand new paddle boats to complete our fleet of 20 boats at Lake Julian Park,” notes Park Ranger Matt Dixon. “This is a great addition to the park and will be an enjoyable amenity for our park patrons for years to come.”
Lake Julian Park offers paddle boat rentals for $12/ hour and $8/half hour. The boats are available to rent every day the park is open (weather permitting), up until 2 hours before park closing time.
