SCP Presents: “Our Friends: Liking, Laughter, Longings and Loss”
May 13 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Jubilee! Community
SCP Presents: "Our Friends: Liking, Laughter, Longings and Loss" @ Jubilee! Community

On May 13th, Story Choreography Projects will debut “Our Friends: Liking, Laughter, Longings and Loss,” a movement theater presentation directed by Barrie Barton. This authentic theater performance interweaves personal story, movement, and multimedia, creating a montage of human experiences that are both personal and universal.

To be performed at Jubilee! Community, “Our Friends” reveals the multitude of friendship dynamics and life lessons that anchor us in sacrifice and love. The live performance is an invitation for audience members to revisit the stories of the people they have counted as friends in their lives. Theatergoers will walk away with a fresh perspective on friendships and feel nourished by seeing human relationships come to life.

“Our friendships vary from lifetime relationships to acquaintances we may see occasionally,” said SCP Artistic Director Barrie Barton. “Friends witness our lives and inform us at a core level who we are, how we cooperate and love, as well as how to say I’m sorry or good-bye.”

Tickets are $16; proceeds from the shows will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina—$3 from every ticket sale will benefit the charity’s mission to match children with adult mentors in whom they will gain a role model, a friend, and access to new experiences through which they build higher aspirations for their lives. Tickets are available at the door or in advance through Eventbrite.

Tales of an Ecotourist @ The Collider | | |

Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe presents Mike Gunter, Jr. author of “Tales of EcoTourist,” which combines humor and memorable anecdotes from five famous ecotourist destinations that offer a breathtaking backdrop to better understanding climate change. Held at The Collider, doors open at 5:30pm, and the book talk will begin at 6:00pm, following by a short Q&A. Free & open to the public.

Crossing the far corners of the globe, Tales of an Ecotourist showcases travel, from the hot and humid Amazon jungle to the frozen but dry Antarctic, as a simple yet spellbinding lens to better understand the complex issue of climate change. At its core, climate change is an issue few truly understand, in large part due to its dizzying array of scientific, economic, cultural, social, and political variables.

Mike Gunter Jr. is a Cornell Distinguished Faculty member and Arthur Vining Davis Fellow at Rollins College where he serves as Professor and Chair of the Political Science department and Director of International Affairs in the Holt School. He is the author of Building the Next Ark: How NGOs Work to Protect Biodiversity.
