Flat Rock Playhouse Presents All Shook Up July 26-Aug.18
Aug 18 @ 2:00 pm
Flat Rock Playhouse Leiman Mainstage

Performances Wednesday and Thursday at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM, Friday at 8:00 PM, Saturday at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and Sunday at 2:00 PM.

Celebrate hit songs made famous by Elvis Presley at the Flat Rock Playhouse in the upcoming production, All Shook Up! A famous Broadway musical hit, All Shook Up combines the hilarity of Shakespearean comedies, such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with the rock & roll music of Elvis Presley. In a musical presentation akin to Godspell and Footloose, this jukebox musical tells the story of a small-town girl with big dreams, a stick-in-the-mud mayor who has squashed any fun in her town, and the surprise visit of a leather-jacketed, guitar-playing, hip-swinging stranger. Experience the magic of rock & roll, gospel, romance, mistaken identities alongside Broadway-caliber musical numbers and hits such as, “Love Me Tender,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Can’t Help Falling In Love”.

Rabbit Hole
Aug 18 @ 2:00 pm
Asheville Community Theatre

“A drama that’s not just a departure but a revelation” – Variety

Becca and Howie Corbett have everything a family could want, until the tragic death of their son turns their world upside down and leaves the couple drifting apart. Rabbit Hole charts their bittersweet journey from a place of uncertainty to a new reality, as they find themselves and each other. In the end, there is always hope. Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize.

We are so excited to work with director Stephanie Hickling Beckman on this production. Stephanie is the Founder and Managing Artistic Director of Different Strokes Performing Arts Collective and has directed several times in 35below. She
shares that “Rabbit Hole has been categorized as a play about parents navigating the loss of a child. Upon closer inspection, it became apparent to me that while the polarizing incident serves as a catalyst for grief, the play can’t be defined by the tragedy that occurs eight months before the opening scene. Rabbit Hole is instead a story about how a family, each in their own way, navigates a life-changing event.”

Love Linda, The Life of Mrs. Cole Porter
Aug 18 @ 2:30 pm
ACT

Love, Linda is a one-woman musical about Linda Lee Thomas, the glamorous spouse and driving force behind renowned American songwriter Cole Porter. The story of their unconventional 35-year marriage interweaves with innovative arrangements of Porter’s timeless music and clever lyrics to create the compelling narrative of Love, Linda.

In the course of the show, Linda takes us behind the glitter of their sensational social life, sharing intimate, and at times heartbreaking moments, such as the dashed dreams of having a child, Cole’s occasional hurtful sexual escapades, his crippling horse accident and her own failing health. To quote Linda from the show, their journey together was far from “a picture-perfect postcard”, but by the end of her story, she has definitively made the case that “just because a love between two people may be difficult to define, that doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.”

Love, Linda is directed by Misty Theisen and stars Karen Covington-Yow.

Seating is limited for this show!

The music of J. S. Bach (Unaccompanied Suites #2 & 3), Benjamin Britten (final movement of Suite for Cello, Op.72), Maurice Ravel and a recent composition by Daniel Crawford will take listeners through an abridged history of the human race (with an emphasis on Western civilization) from its beginning until today. Ticket sales for the concert will support the work that the Creation Care Alliance does to bring practical and hopeful solutions to our congregations and broader secular communities by engaging hearts and minds through inspiration, education, service, and advocacy. Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes
Aug 18 @ 7:00 pm
The Orange Peel

Get a CD copy of Brittany Howard’s upcoming album “Jaime” with every online ticket order; 1 ticket minimum.

Each ticket purchased online includes 1 physical CD Copy of Brittany Howard’s upcoming album, “Jaime” which will be released on September 20, 2019. You will receive an additional email within 5 business days of order completion with instructions on how to redeem your album. US/Canadian residents only. Not valid for Fan to Fan Resale.

“I turned thirty and I was like, ‘What do I want the rest of my life to look like?,'” says Brittany Howard. “Do I want to play the same songs until I’m fifty and then retire, or do I do something that’s scarier for me? Do I want people to understand me and know me, do I want to tell them my story? I’m very private, but my favorite work is when people are being honest and really doing themselves.”

As the frontwoman and guitarist for Alabama Shakes, Howard has become one of music’s most celebrated figures – the band has won four Grammys (out of its nine nominations), and she has performed everywhere from the Obama White House to the main stage at Lollapalooza, where she sang with Paul McCartney at his invitation. But for her solo debut, Jaime, Howard boldly decided to explore new directions, with diverse instrumentation and arrangements and intimate, revelatory lyrics.

Free Theater! Romeo & Juliet

Montford Park Players

Montford Park Players Presents Classic Love Story, Romeo & Juliet

Romeo & Juliet
by William Shakespeare

Produced by Montford Park Players at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre

Show Dates:
August 2-24
Friday, Saturday and Sunday @ 7:30pm

Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre
92 Gay St. Asheville, NC

We’re proud announce our upcoming production of the classic romance Romeo & Juliet. All performances will be held at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in the heart of Asheville’s historic Montford District, from August 2nd through the 24th on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30pm. This performance, like ALL of Montford Park Players’ shows, will be absolutely FREE to attend.

Romeo & Juliet remains one of the most-enduring stories in all of history, spawning countless productions at theaters around the world and filmed versions, both of the original and stories based on it, seemingly every few years. In this years’ version, director Mandy Bean presents the show close to as it may have originally been produced, traditional costumes and production concept.
The story of these “star-crossed lovers” was last presented by Montford Park Players five years ago. It tells the story of the Capulets and the Montagues, two families in a long-standing feud. When their children Juliet and Romeo, respectively, fall in love, the blowback is violent and even deadly. Although, it is a tragedy in the traditional sense, the play is very funny, charming and romantic in its early acts. Director Bean hopes that those who perceive of the show as a tear-jerker, will see the brilliant antics set forth in before things get heavy.

Romeo here is played by Jackson Cole with MPP-regular Sophie Stanley as his love, Juliet. The cast contains some of Montford’s most-popular players, including Devyn Ray Villareal, Haven Volpe, Jason Williams and David Broshar. The show is, as mentioned, directed by Mandy Bean, who directed the hit A Midsummer Night’s Dream last season. Costumes will be by Sam LeBroq, with choreography provided by Kristi DeVille.

For more information or to reserve seats, go to montfordparkplayers.org, or call at (828) 254-5146.

Adult Literacy tutoring
Aug 19 all-day

Interested in a short-term tutoring commitment?

While the majority of Adult Literacy students require a year-long commitment in order to gain basic literacy skills, we are seeing an increase in students who have their eyes on a more short-term goal: earning their HSE (High School Equivalency). The most well-known of these certifications is the GED, and most Adult Literacy students currently on the waiting list are looking for 1-on-1 tutoring to prepare for one of the four subject tests – Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, or Science. If you have a background in any of these subjects, and you are looking for a more short-term tutoring commitment, HSE tutoring may fit your schedule. It typically takes 4-6 months of tutoring to prepare an Adult Literacy student for a single subject test.
 We’d love to have you!

Tyler Cassidy (fka Froggy Fresh) +Band at Grey Eagle Asheville

The Grey Eagle

Tyler Cassidy (formerly known as Froggy Fresh) and band performing the new material from Piano Songs live for the first time ever!

For the longest time, Tyler Cassidy, formerly known as Froggy Fresh, formerly known as Krispy Kreme, formerly known as Tyler Cassidy, was an enigma – having blurred the lines between who he is and his elaborately written character. The franchise was one of textbook Youtube legacy, a self-produced project that earned hundreds of millions of views, John Cena endorsement, Tosh.0 appearance, and survival of a rebrand and a follow-up album that charted 3rd on the Billboard Comedy chart. However, everything you thought you knew about Froggy Fresh was wrong. In a later self-retrospective, it was revealed that the project was birthed in Tyler’s feeling lack of attention to the preceding original music he had made.

In 2017 – almost five years to the date of the first YouTube upload – Froggy Fresh surprised fans with a live tour, playing to packed venues across every crevice of the continental US. The tour was a swan song of the Froggy Fresh project as Tyler had grown out of it (and feared being stuck throughout his career as what he described as a Pee-Wee Herman type character). The formative life-experience of extensive travel through touring and connecting with fans, re-ignited Tyler’s creative flame as he taught himself to compose and perform on the piano.

The initial offerings were solemn tunes of love, loss and redemption – written for a concept album. Now the listener, who had extended a Kleenex for Froggy’s nose in the Baddest, would use it for their own eyes. While these songs would earn Tyler critical acclaim and more millions of likes and views, his biggest hit would stray from the more serious, heart-wrenching material and land a spot on the cover of Reddit.

Garnering the attention of major players in the music industry, Boyfriend rivaled the virility of any video from the Froggy Fresh project with one major difference – the video was a simple iPhone shot of him performing the song on his grandma’s piano, and finally his songwriting was recognized on its own. Additional material followed which features sultry tales, irreverent streams of consciousness, and a healthy dose of millennial “fockitol” in response to this age of doom and confusion. Froggy Fresh was Tyler’s Trojan horse and he’s emerged with multiple albums of material plus a high-energy backing band…. and this born entertainer is just getting started.
