The Asheville Choral Society presents The Deepness of the Blue, a concert featuring the poetry and musical compositions of African-American composers. We will feature guest musicians and soloists, in addition to more than 100 ACS singers.
This concert’s music includes beautiful melodies, driving rhythms and powerful messages – an evening of engaging music that highlights underrepresented artists and composers of color. The central piece on the program is William Averitt’s Deepness of the Blue, a 5-movement setting of Langston Hughes’ moving texts on love and the struggle of the human experience. Other selections include Rosephanye Powell’s The Word was God, Anthony Trecek-King’s (current conductor of the Boston Children’s Choir) I’m Building Me a Home and the gorgeous Harry T. Burleigh arrangement of Deep River.
Grab a pint and enjoy a crafted sandwich or salad from Deli Volv!

Support and community for trans, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming youth is essential to their well being, and their parents, family, and caregivers need support and community, too! Each month we have a meetup to make connections, share information and ideas, ask for advice, and be able to offer each other understanding and support. Snacks will be provided, but you are welcome to bring things to share if you’d like!
In October we will provide pizza, and veggies and hummus! And our craft projects will make-your-own lucky bamboo, mini zen sand gardens, and perhaps DIY magnets for those that love playing with #aesthetic! Please RSVP here on the event page or by emailing [email protected] so we know how much food and project supplies to provide. Thanks!
There will be no gatekeeping or demands/expectations about how you and your family navigate transition, just support and a listening ear. We are here to answer questions, offer information and support, and help you connect with other parents who are navigating similar situations, not push any agenda or expectations about what is right for your family. Bring your youth and let them enjoy the ease of socializing with other trans, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming youth while making something fun and creative that they can bring home with them while you get a chance to connect with other parents and caregivers and talk with our Support Programs Director, Mx. Tuesday Feral, LPCA.
Trained facilitators who are experienced with gender non-conforming youth will offer fun activities for the youth to participate in while the parents and caregivers network and support each other around the joys and trials of helping their children navigate the world and their gender in a separate, facilitated group.

MUSIC:
No BS! Brass – Based in Richmond, Virginia, No BS! Brass Band has quickly earned a reputation as a premier band to see for heart-pounding energy and uncontrollable dancing. They take their music into uncharted territory, embracing the spirit of New Orleans into its original East Coast modern funk and fearlessly combining elements of James Brown, John Coltrane, Michael Jackson and Led Zeppelin into their fiercely original sound. Founders Reggie Pace and Lance Koehler have cast this 11-piece band in which nearly every member has had conservatory training, holding various degrees in music. In putting together the compositions and arrangements, the “b.s.” has been stripped to give the audience something solid, unique, organic, real and powerful. They have the look of New Orleans with the raw sound all their own.
Sirius.B – Sirius.B’s music is created with an eclectic mix of vocal harmonies and instruments including cello, accordion, violin, marching band and African percussion, charango, flamenco and acoustic guitar, banjo, and melodica. Sirius.B brings to you the finest Absurdist Gypsy Folk Funk Punk that the world has to offer. Their “impressively irreverent, combustible, three-ring circus of sound [and] high-energy style is difficult to neatly categorize. They play foreign music as well as upbeat and serious originals, with a lyrical style ranging from the quirky to the absurd.” -Mountain Xpress
Lagerhosen – Lagerhosen was created over laughs and beers at the end of a wedding event featuring the Asheville Second Line marching band. Literally translated as “beerpants”, the underlying concept of a party-polka band was perfect for Beer City USA. With popular tunes such as Roll Out the Barrell, Lichstenstein Polka, Ein Prozit and others, Lagerhosen has a powerful and punchy sound.
LIVE GLASSBLOWING DEMONSTRATIONS: Enjoy glassblowers creating works of art while you watch! Select items will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting a local non-profit.

Their cutting-edge modern bluegrass is delivered with a deep knowledge of, and admiration for, the work of the music’s founding fathers. Timely yet timeless, The Grascals make music that is entirely relevant to the here and now, yet immersed in traditional values of soul and musicianship. It’s a unique sound that has earned three Grammy® nominations and two Entertainer of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. As their records prove, The Grascals’ rare musical empathy gives them an unerring ear for just the right touch to illuminate each offering’s deepest spirit – whether they’re digging into one of their original songs or reworking a bluegrass classic or a pop standard. Take for instance, fan favorite, “Last Train to Clarksville.” Non-bluegrass listeners enjoy a new take on a familiar song, while diehard bluegrass audiences who may have never heard the Monkees classic, respond in-kind, not even realizing that the song has been Grascalized.
