Mystery of the Seahorse
May 26 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre

The Mystery of the Seahorse
Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre and the students of The New Studio of Dance present The Mystery of the Seahorse, a thrilling tale of love and bravery. Set in an endangered underwater reef with cartoon-type characters, this story explores the themes of ecology and pollution. A vibrant and colorful performance, The Mystery of the Seahorse will not only be entertaining and beautiful, but will also teach the lesson of why we need to keep our oceans clean.

Giles Collards giant puppet head creations and colorful sets compliment the inventive and original choreography of Susan Collard, the staff of New Studio of Dance and even some of the students themselves. Audiences are in for a treat as they are transported underwater for this lively and entertaining full-length dance theater spectacular.

The New Studio of Dance was established in 1970 and offers a comprehensive and wide-ranging dance education to young students of the community. Not only are there the usual classes in ballet, tap, and modern; but there are also classes in composition, swing, belly dance, and more. As the students become older and more experienced, they help to design their own dance program and are given a lot of creative freedom to discover who they are as dance artists.

Dont miss The Mystery of the Seahorse for a colorful, underwater treat. With two weeks of performances, this show will be a great way for children of all ages to spring into summer!

The class will cover basic tools, techniques, and general recipes for fermenting fruits and vegetables at home. Everyone will get to taste several Fermenti samples and will leave with an understanding of how to ferment with ease and accessibility in the comfort of your home. Includes A 2-hour Discussion, Tasting and Demos with email support after the class.

$30 per person in advance, $35 at door

Meg Chamberlain holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the Corcoran College Of Art and Design. In 2008, Meg and husband Lars began primitive homesteading in Missouri without the use of power and running water. From these conditions, a unified understanding of how traditional food preservation could be modernized without losing its heritage was identified and food waste practices were explored. At FERMENTI. we help connect you to that amazing past by teaching traditional Lactic Bacteria fermentation of vegetable ingredients and how they can help us preserve our future! Please join us and help bring this tradition back to life!

Decyfer Down “Crash” 10th Anniversary Tour – Greenville, SC
May 26 @ 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
The Firmament

DD playing the album, “Crash” in its Entirety!
Such an amazing show… Three great bands in one amazing afternoon: Relentless Flood & Halcyon Wander

All ages welcome!

Ticket prices:
$15 Presale
$20 Day of show
Meet N Greet will be available TBA

Take Grammy and Dove Award nominations, a trio of best-selling major label albums, seven chart-topping singles, plus songs in major sporting events (UFC, WWE) alongside countless viral videos, and it’s certainly been a productive decade for Decyfer Down. Add in countless headlining tours, a double bill with Korn’s Brian “Head” Welch, plus support for Breaking Benjamin, Theory Of A Dead Man, Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, Puddle Of Mudd and Red (amongst many others), and it’s been nothing short of an all around whirlwind leading up to its latest (and somewhat belated) long player The Other Side Of Darkness (set to release independently through The Fuel Music).

Sure the guys from a small North Carolina town were overwhelmingly appreciative for those opportunities, humbled at the worldwide response and thankful for at least three lifetime’s worth of experiences. However, with growing families, the constant riggers of traveling (mainly the logistics, never the people or places), coupled with mounting pressure to maintain the merry-go-round, the tension proved so tangible that at the peak of what appeared to be the perfect musical dream come true, Decyfer Down quietly unloaded the tour bus for what felt like the last time and simply retreated from public view.

Even with the overt commitment to their core beliefs, Decyfer Down’s reach has stretched well beyond simply spiritual circles. In fact, the group is just as accustomed to playing in clubs, theatres and arenas as it is faith-based events and churches, which accounts for an incredibly diverse fan base.

“People are people no matter what four walls surround them,” suggests Chris before Brandon expands. “That’s always been the heart of our band. We want to sing about the struggles we go through as Christians, but chances are there are those who are going through the exact same struggles and trials. We’ve never set out to be a mainstream band or a Christian band. Whatever doors open, we just walk through them. We love playing everywhere and we love meeting people.”

Hip Bones (Jazz) – Free
May 26 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria

North Carolina based Hip Bones features:
Gary Schwantes on saxophones and bamboo flutes, Shannon Hoover on bass and loops and Robin Tolleson on drums.

Visit:
http://www.hipbones.net
http://www.myspace.com/hipbones4
for audio, video, photos and more!

Bad long before The Bad Plus, Hip Bones has been called “renegade jazz,” “psychedelic funk,” and “monsters of the mash-up.” It has been written, “These gentlemen push the boundaries of jazz…and get away with it!”
Hip Bones’ music combines funk and dub-flavored original instrumentals, along with spirited psychedelic covers from such diverse sources as Jimi Hendrix, The O’Jays, Sting, and Freddie Hubbard. Hip Bones has released two CDs, Threedom and 4. They are working on a new release recorded in Nashville with Grammy-winning engineer/producer Bil Vorndick (Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Allison Krauss).
A trio that plays more like a five-piece, Hip Bones gives jazz a good name, bringing new listeners into the fold each performance with their imagination, irreverence, tasty musical impressions and improvisations.

“Together they sound like a band twice their size. They’ve also managed to achieve that prized goal of musicians – a unique sound.” Paul Wertico
“It’s one thing to mash-up songs using studio trickery. It’s another to do so onstage with your bare hands, like jazz-funk trio The Hip Bones does.” (Metromix)
“Angular melodies, time-twisting rhythmic figures and fluent solos, often over hard-grooving loops. Anyone interested in quality jazz, funk, and world music for that matter, can find plenty of interest in Hip Bones.” (Roanoke Times)
“Seriously funky jazz from San Francisco, this all-instrumental trio is all about deeply textured grooves and tight improv, on material from the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bob Marley, and Radiohead.” (Connect Savannah)

Dressing for the Occasion: a New Temporary Exhibit
May 27 @ 9:00 am – May 28 @ 5:00 am
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

A new temporary exhibit titled “Dressing for the Occasion: Mid-Century Sandburg as Celebrity and Family Man” opens on May 13, 2019. The exhibit, which runs through October, is part of the Sandburg Home tour and features clothing and accessories from both the park’s permanent collection and loaned items from the Sandburg family.

“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.

Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.

Carl Sandburg Folk Music Festival 2019
May 27 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site hosts the 33rd annual Carl Sandburg Folk Music Festival on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2019. This free festival offers live music performances from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The folk festival honors Carl Sandburg and his preservation of American musical heritage, as found in his collection, The American Songbag. The festival’s performers are skilled in sharing traditional stories in distinctive ways. All performances take place in the amphitheater, unless otherwise specified, and signs will direct festival goers.

Parking
Keep in mind that our parking lots fill up quickly. We will run a courtesy shuttle from satellite parking lots at the Flat Rock Playhouse (located across the street) and from the Flat Rock Village Offices (110 Village Center Drive) to the park entrance, throughout the day. It is a short walk from the park entrance to the amphitheater. There will be also be a shuttle operating inside the park to take visitors from the entrance to the amphitheater, Sandburg Home and barn area.

At 11:00 am, Lillian Chase and Friends perform old time music on fiddle and guitar. Lillian is a talented 15-year-old Appalachian fiddler and ballad singer. Her fiddling draws both from old-time styles and bluegrass. She has won awards at prestigious music contests in the region, including at the Mount Airy Bluegrass and Old-Time Fiddlers’ Convention.

At 12:00 pm, Drayton and the Dreamboats perform a mix of swing tunes, latin numbers and vocal ballads from the golden age of radio. With clever arrangements and rock solid musicianship, the band breathes new life into some of the twentieth century’s greatest tunes. Their unique approach transcends nostalgia and offers listeners something both vintage and new.

At 1:00 pm, the Leeda ‘Lyric’ Jones Band plays soul music. Lyric started out busking on the streets of Asheville while touching many hearts. Since taking to the streets, Lyric has shared the stage with legends such as George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Gladys Knight, Booker T. Jones, Little Big Town, Dionne Warwick, Count M’Butu and Warren Haynes.

At 2:00 pm, Jamie Laval and vocalist Megan McConnell take the audience on a musical journey through Celtic lands, reimagining Gaelic love songs, and ancient mythic tales with violin and voice. Laval is recognized throughout the U.S and Britain as one of the premier performers of Celtic violin music. He has performed for Her Majesty the Queen, appeared on Dave Matthews’ platinum “Some Devil” album, and presented a TED Talk on the value of arts and music in our communities. Vocalist Megan McConnell is lauded for the ethereal, lyric beauty of her singing, her broad stylistic range, and her perky, theatrical performance sense.

Goat Barn Area
From 11:00 am to 3:00 pm near the barn, Steve and Jean Smith will be performing on mountain and hammered dulcimer music. Steve and Jean have performed in at least nineteen states and two other countries, as well as on radio and on television. They have taught dulcimer workshops at festivals across the region and are award-winning musicians.

Parking will be available at the Flat Rock Playhouse and Village of Flat Rock with a shuttle running from these locations to the park entrance. It is a short walk from the entrance to the amphitheater.

The event will be held at the new amphitheater located near the park entrance. Bench seating is available and visitors are also welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets as seating is expected to fill quickly. Come prepared for warm weather, with sun protection, water and snacks. Dogs are not permitted in the seating areas for the festival.

Carl Sandburg began playing the guitar in the early 1900’s to enhance his lectures and performed during the era of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. He was the mentor for Burl Ives. Sandburg played the guitar, banjo, and harmonica; and collected a series of folk songs, which he published in his book The American Songbag. The festival began in 1987 and is supported by the National Park Service, Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara, Eastern National, and a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council; administered by the Arts Council of Henderson County.
