Writer Jasmin Pittman Morrell will host a class on constructing personal narratives November 11 at 10 a.m. in the Laurel Forum in Karpen Hall. Registration is $20 and open to the public. During the class, participants will explore constructing personal narratives, defined as stories about ourselves, the world, and the intersections of the two. By engaging poetry, excerpts of memoir essays, and using a tool called “the ladder of abstraction,” we’ll discuss the value of showing and telling in storytelling – and why we need both to deepen meaning. Making meaning is the purview of storytellers, and when we share our interpretations of events both public and intimate, we have a powerful opportunity to create empathy and shared understanding. There will be time for writing and feedback in this workshop that welcomes you to craft art birthed from your true stories.
Jasmin Pittman Morrell writes about identity, place, and belonging. Her work is most recently featured in “Bigger Than Bravery: Black Resilience and Reclamation in a Time of Pandemic,” as well as “Meeting at the Table: African-American Women Write On Race, Culture and Community”.

Visitor Parking
Visitors may park in faculty/staff and All Permit lots from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends, holidays, and campus breaks. Visitors are not permitted to park in resident student lots at any time.
Prior to 5pm, any visitor (regardless of their reason for visit) need to adhere to the current practices listed on the parking website. Get your visitor parking permit here
TFAC invites all artists: painters, sculptors, writers, performers & more — to a casual weekly drop-in gathering on Saturday mornings at 9 AM to share your works in progress, alert others, and chat about art and what’s happening in your community.
The first weekly Coffee is Saturday, August 20 at 9 am.
No RSVP needed, just drop by!

Now, each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand-new novel.
If you are doing NaNoWriMo this year, the Buncombe County Public Libraries are here to help! Several branches will be hosting “Write-ins” throughout the month of November, offering quiet spaces for writers to come chip away at their word count. Each Write-in will have its own unique spin (snacks, ambient music, writing prompts, local author hosts, etc.), so please check the library event calendar for specific details.
In addition to the Write-Ins, a NaNoWriMo Wrap Party will be held at rEvolve Mercantile on Wednesday, December 6th from 6pm – 8pm. All NaNoWriMo participants are invited to join us for food, activities, prize raffles , and “micro mic” readings that will give each writer a chance to share a paragraph or two from their novel.

National Novel Writing Month National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, empowering approach to creative writing. The challenge: draft an entire novel in just one month. Why do it? For 30 wild, exciting, surprising days, you get to silence your inner critic, let your imagination take over, and just create! We want to help. Come by our library and have a quiet space with other would-be authors to think, plan and perhaps, talk over ideas. We’ll have coffee and light refreshments available, along with comfortable seats, and a place to spread out a bit and think. Maybe one day we’ll have YOUR novel in our library collection! This month we’re discussing Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. The Leicester Library Book Discussion Group meets the second Tuesday of each month at 1 pm in the Community Room at the library. Newcomers welcome!

Great news for poets and poetry lovers: Dark City Poet’s Society is returning to the Black Mountain Library. DCPS is a completely free poetry group that is open to poets of all ages and experience levels. Join us at the Black Mountain Library from 6-7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month for our (respectful) critique group. Puptart is a tail wagging robot dog who sits and stays, pants when listening, and responds to someone talking to and petting it. It will not jump up or run away, plus it’s fur free, so no sneezes and runny noses coming your way! Every Wednesday afternoon, Puptart will be available for reading practice in the children’s picture book room. Help establish a joy of reading and develop early literacy skills. Please join us at The 2nd Act in Hendersonville, NC for our first monthly book club meeting that strives to read books that create a closer knit and more inclusive community! We will meet virtually and in person monthly to discuss a book, so read the book and then join in the discussion in person or online every third Thursday. All are welcome! At the end of each meeting we will vote on the next book! The virtual club meeting will be in Zoom format and will meet 2.5 hours after the in-person meeting (8:00pm EST). After the meeting there is live acoustic music so stay and enjoy the vibe with your new friends! Put us down on your calendar for every third Third Thursday!

Children’s book author Marsha Almodovar, who is also LEAF’s Easel Rider and ULEAF Community Events Coordinator, will be sharing her new book, Mucho Mucho. Copies will be on sale at the event for $23.
Mucho Mucho is a Spanish-language book (with English subtitles). Its principal character is an Afro-Latina child from Puerto Rico who talks about the things in the world she loves that all kids have access to regardless of where they come from or their economic background. It’s a big topic told in a very simple way. The book’s demographic is early-elementary children.
Regular entry free to LEAF Global is a suggested donation of $5.
