In Times of Seismic Sorrows
Oct 12 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Center for Craft

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

SVM Book Club: Jacksonland by Steve Inskeep
Oct 12 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center

The Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center will continue hosting its free book club in 2018 on the second Friday of each month at 11:30 at the museum.

Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of the month’s chosen reading selection to participate in a casual discussion of themes, questions, and musings. Coffee and tea will be provided.

The books in the series span a range of titles and include fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and prose and focus on themes related to western North Carolina and the whole of the Appalachian region.

October’s read is Jacksonland: President Andrew Jackson, Chief John Ross and the Great American Land Grab by Steve Inskeep, host of NPR’s Morning Edition. From the publisher, “Jacksonland is the thrilling narrative history of two men—President Andrew Jackson and Cherokee chief John Ross—who led their respective nations at a crossroads of American history. Five decades after the Revolutionary War, the United States approached a constitutional crisis. At its center stood two former military comrades locked in a struggle that tested the boundaries of our fledgling democracy. Jacksonland is their story.”

Live Music: Active Bird Community
Oct 12 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
New Belgium Brewing

Active Bird Community is a Brooklyn band formed in 2005 by members Tom D’Agustino, Zach Slater and Andrew Wolfson when they were in middle school. Over 10 years later, with the addition of Quinn McGovern on drums, Active Bird Community continues to enliven the stage with their sprightly slacker vibes reminiscent of 90’s indie rock. While ABC was young and experimenting with their sound, early listeners sensed something teeming beneath the surface. In the years since, they’ve released 3 full length albums and played hundreds of shows to adoring fans and delighted newcomers alike. In that time, their sound has gone under numerous revisions—not out of necessity but out of a tacit refusal to stagnate or sound like anything else. As the members matured, fell in (and out) of love, moved around and made their own way, the lyrics and arrangements of each song reflected both the harmony and the discord that comes with growing up in New York. Though, as anyone who’s seen them live can tell you, their music is so infectious you can’t help but lose yourself right along with them.

Kenn Kotara: _i_u_ opening reception
Oct 12 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Pink Dog Creative

Exhibition title: _i_u_
Venue: Pink Dog Creative Gallery, 348 Depot Street, Asheville, NC 28801 in the River Arts District Dates: October 12–November 11, 2018
Opening Reception: Friday, Oct 12, 6–8 pm

Statement:
_i_u_ is subtraction, deduction, rejection, neutral, quiet, silent, truth, literal, deliberate, less, simple, orderly, systemic, temporal, phenomena. Intentionally cryptic and a double entendre, it is the result of both initiating and responding to various catalysts. Arcane systems that in some way serve to explain our world have me constantly posing what if type questions and exploring ways of noting observations, and this ask-answer sequence fuels my practice. One particular question—how does form come into being—has led me towards creating these phenomenological meditations.
Bio:
Kenn Kotara works in a variety of media and substrates on painting, drawing, sculpture, structure and installation. Earning a BFA in Graphic Design and an MFA in Studio Art from Louisiana Tech University, Kotara’s architectural background and Louisiana southern roots permeate his work. The underpinning of his work is structured upon systems using the grid, language, and maps on which to hang his subject. His work has been in over one hundred fifty (150) exhibitions, and is in the permanent collections of the Asheville Art Museum, Louisiana State Museum, U.S. Embassy in Jamaica, University of Texas Southwest Medical Center, Bellagio (Las Vegas), Neiman Marcus, Peninsula Hotel (Paris), Sumisho (Tokyo) and Western Asset Management (Sao Paulo). Kotara maintains an active studio practice in Asheville and is Assistant Professor and Chair of the Art Department at Mars Hill University.
