Budget Advocacy 101
Jan 29 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
YWCA of Asheville

(Español abajo)
What do you value? What do you want to change?

Government spends money on the things that we value collectively, like safety and roads. It decides every year the prioritization of issues to address and services to provide.

Are you already working with a group that’s working to make specific change? For example childcare, housing, education, justice system, community health.

The government budgeting process is where the rubber hits the road and is one of the most important processes for change in our community. During the budgeting process, government allocates money to these issues, as well as specific projects.

What if you feel your values aren’t heard?

If you want to the government to address issues or make change, the budgeting process is where you should speak the loudest.

How do you do it?

Find out how you can participate in the city and county (and even state and federal) budgeting process through an interactive workshop. You will learn content of budgets, the timeline and processes for approval, and the best ways to advocate for change.

FOOD, CHILDCARE AND INTERPRETATION PROVIDED

Hot Buti Yoga + HotCore
Jan 29 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Primal Studios

Get in on this HOT new class that enhances core strength!!

Starting January 1st, this class combines 30 minutes of Hot Buti Yoga, with Cynthia Sims followed by 30 minutes of HotCore, with Ebonie Morris!

Be sure to ARRIVE TO CLASS HYDRATED and bring a towel! Dress for the heat…. a heated class is no place to be modest! Less is better for your body’s natural cooling mechanism.

Heated classes will flush toxins from the skin, improve your strength and allow you to safely go deeper into poses and stretches. Working in the heat helps the body to relax, improves breathing, and focuses the mind, which develops better mental concentration.

A yoga mat, hand towel, bottled water, and smiles are encouraged. Please consult a physician before taking a heated Buti Yoga class if you have hypertension, low blood pressure, heart disease, or extreme sensitivity to heat.

**Hot Buti Yoga** 30 minutes with Cynthia
Heated 82-90 degrees! Hot Buti is a soulful blend of power yoga, tribal dance & conditioning, with the focus on deep abdominal toning through the buti spiral structure technique.

***HotCore*** 30 minutes with Ebonie
HotCore® is a 30 minute class that utilizes the Spiral Structure Technique® to engage the deep muscles of the core. Broken into pre-sequenced sets to maximize muscle toning, look and functionality, Hotcore® is the perfect add-on class for students looking to enhance core strength or push the limits of their yoga practice.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING:
Students practice Hotcore in socks to facilitate fluid “drag” or friction creating resistance. The majority of movements in Hotcore® build deep core strength best a ccessed through an exaggerated tucking of the pelvis and intentional rounding of the spine. In between sets, students move to restorative yoga asanas to stretch and lengthen. Most Hotcore® classes consist of 4-5 pre-set sequences at the discretion and timing of the instructor.

Disclaimer: Your socks can be cute however the purpose is function- lol. The more slippery the surface, the easier movements will be to execute with fluidity and grace. You have the option to double or triple layer socks, wear leggings with knee high socks or knee pads for extra security.

Craft & Barrel Night: Build Your Own Dreamcatcher
Jan 29 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Highland Brewing Company

Craft & Barrel Night is a celebration of craft in all forms. Each month we will invite a local craftmaker to lead a weekly class focused on the creation of a small piece of art. This January we will have The Bloomery leading classes on how to create your own dreamcatcher.

Craft & Barrel Night will also celebrate the craft in “craft beer.” Our growing barrel program has grown rapidly in the last year, yet each beer requires time, skill, and creativity to ensure that the final product is a work of art. Each week will feature a dollar off a featured barrel-aged beer.

Start the new year with happy dreams and beautiful beer!

The cost of this project is $15-$40 depending on the size you choose at the event. No preregistration required. All forms of payment are accepted.

Intro to Samba with Vivie
Jan 29 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Studio Zahiya

An introduction to the fun & exciting Brazilian street dance. Samba owes its rhythm and moves to African dances. The traditional African circle dance with a lone central performer relied on weight shifts, rapid steps, and slides to a 2/4 percussive beat, and a fairly still upper body with arms and hands responding to the hip and leg movements. samba is irresistible, its gyrations richly colored by regional and international influences. Today, it would be impossible to imagine carnival without samba.
