Nominations are Now Being Accepted for the 15th Annual ATHENA of Henderson County Award
Mar 10 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
online

Vanessa Mintz 0507

The Henderson County Chamber of Commerce, Pardee UNC Health Care, Optimum/Morris Broadband, and Judy Stroud/State Farm Insurance are pleased to announce the 15th Annual ATHENA Leadership Award in Henderson County in memory of Vanessa Y. Mintz. Nominations are now being accepted for the ATHENA Leadership Award, which will be presented at the Professional Women’s Luncheon in May to an exemplary leader who has achieved excellence in their business or profession, served the community in a meaningful way, and, most importantly, actively assisted women to achieve their full leadership potential.

Founded over 30 years ago, ATHENA International is a women’s leadership organization that supports, develops and honors women leaders through the programs it administers. ATHENA’s flagship program, the ATHENA Leadership Award Program, has honored over 6000 women leaders from hundreds of cities and eight countries since its inception in 1982.

Vanessa Y. Mintz brought the ATHENA award to Henderson County in 2008 and she embodied the values underlying ATHENA Vanessas Vision

International’s philosophy of incorporating the talent and expertise of women into the leadership of our businesses, our communities, and our government. Reflective of a quote attributed to Plato, “What is honored in a country will be cultivated there”, the ATHENA Leadership Award honors and illuminates the leaders and leadership styles of individuals others would emulate.

The program is facilitated locally by the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce, a licensed ATHENA host organization. Nominations are sought throughout the community. Recipients are selected by a diverse group of out-of-town professional judges, based on Athena leadership criteria.

ATHENA Leadership Award Recipients hail from all professional sectors. The award’s rich history, international scope, and emphasis on mentorship make this award unique and amongst the most prestigious leadership awards one can receive. Past Henderson County ATHENA Recipients Include:

Kathy Streeter Morgan (2021)

Barbara Volk, City of Hendersonville (2020)

Barb Morgan, Project Dignity of WNC (2019)

Lee Henderson Hill, Community Foundation of Henderson County (2018)

Roxanna Pepper, Children & Family Resource Center (2017)

Judy Stroud, State Farm Insurance (2016)

Judith Long, Free Clinics (2015)

Caroline Long, St. Gerard House (2014)

Annie Fritschner, First United Methodist Church (2013)

Myra Grant, Pardee Hospital Foundation (2012)

Joyce Mason, Four Seasons Compassion for Life (2011)

Pat Shepherd, Pat’s School of Dance (2010)

Ragan Ward, Carolina Alliance Bank (2009)

Robin Reed, Bares It All (2008)

Market Your Brand (Part 1 of 2)
Mar 12 @ 8:30 am – 12:30 pm
online

No cost due to sponsor support

A brand is more than a name and logo. It is the perception that people have in their mind about a company, product or service that attracts them to you. Marketing a brand is like a 6-cylinder engine. If all 6-cylinders are not working together, one does not get the full power from the engine. Having only a website, business card and social media is like only having 3 cylinders. You do not get the full power from the brand.

Can the Market Your Brand Workshop help you with your market your company, product or service?

Take this self-test. You get one point for each that fits your company.
___ Healthy Increases in Annual Sales
___ High Profit Margins
___ Top of Search – Page 1 on Google My Business with a 4.5-5 Star Rating and High Number of Reviews
___ Branded Mobile-Friendly Website with High Traffic Numbers
___ Top Of Mind  (When people think of your business category your name pops into their mind.)
___ Branded Social Media Platform with High Number of Likes & Followers
___ Branded Content Strategy (know and use key words that attract customers)
___ Branded Collateral Material (all printed materials are current and effective i.e. business card)
___ Use Brand Pivot Point in Making Marketing Decisions
___ Have and use a Customer Database to Market the Brand
___ Market to all 3 Stages in the Customer Cycle (Prospect, 1st Time Customer and Repeat Customer)
___ Use Brand Tagline in all Online and Print Marketing Materials
___ Branded Advertising Specialties (all promotional materials are current and effective i.e. tee-shirts)
___ Branded Company Spaces (promote brand in offices, lobby, store front, hallways, bathroom, etc.)
___ Branded External and Internal Signage (use signage to promote brand and it is current)
___ Total
If you have a score of less than 14, the Market Your Brand Workshop can help create a plan to better Market Your Brand.

Volunteer Expo 2022 Junior League of Asheville
Mar 12 @ 12:00 pm
Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts Asheville
The Junior League of Asheville, Inc. (JLA) will hold its fourth annual Volunteer Expo, on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at the Crowne Plaza Expo Center from 12 to 3pm. Modeled after a job fair, this free event will feature more than 70 local nonprofits looking to fill ongoing and future volunteer needs. Nonprofits in almost every area of community concern will be present at the event: health, poverty, legal aid, environmental stewardship, women’s issues, arts, civic leadership, technology, education and animal welfare.
Excitement for the Volunteer Expo continues to grow. The 2020 event featured over 70 non-profits and was attended by more than 600 community members coming to network and sign up to volunteer with nonprofit organizations.
The 2022 Volunteer Expo will be accepting applications starting in October. Due to the increase in interest for booths at the Expo, this year the League plans to jury all applications received instead of awarding booths on a first come first serve basis. They hope this will ensure a good mix of volunteer opportunities in a variety of service areas and allow new nonprofits a chance to have a booth at the event. All community members are invited to attend this event. If you are a nonprofit interested in participating in the 2022 Volunteer Expo, please email us at [email protected].

Buncombe County is seeking project ideas to help the community recover from and respond to COVID-19 and its negative economic impacts. Nonprofits and public organizations can submit projects now for consideration to be funded by federal COVID Recovery Funding.

This is the second Request for Proposals issued by the County as part of COVID Recovery Funding, which Buncombe County was allocated $50.7M through the American Rescue Plan Act. So far, the county has awarded $23.1M to 27 projects, leaving $27.6 M available still to award.

Buncombe County Commissioners have selected ten categories for this round of proposals:

  • Affordable Housing
  • Aging/Older Adults
  • Business Support/Economic Development
  • Environment/Climate
  • Homelessness
  • K-12 Education
  • Infrastructure and/or Broadband
  • Mental Health/Substance Use
  • NC Pre-K Expansion
  • Workforce

If you are interested in applying, the deadline is Tuesday, April 12 at noon. Learn more here.

The county is also holding a workshop that will help you better understand what projects the County is looking to fund and best practices on creating a successful application. Learn more about the scope of projects Buncombe County is looking for and have a chance to ask questions. All questions and responses from the session will be posted in the form of an addendum, and a recording of the session will be published.

The virtual funding workshop will be held on Monday, March 14 from 1:30-3 p.m. Register here.
