Many words come to mind when you hear the name Cannibal Corpse, but one truly defines the soon-to-be thirty-year death metal veterans: Unstoppable. Returning with their 14th full-length, the monstrous Red Before Black, serves to not only reiterate this but to once more raise the stakes, making it very clear who sets the standard when it comes to always compelling music that is equally brutal and complex. Moreover, the band have pushed themselves again, ensuring that it stands out from their catalog. “Throughout our career we’ve tried to improve the precision of both our musical execution and our album production, while still maintaining full-on aggression. ‘Red Before Black’ continues in that direction, but might go even further on the aggressive side of things. It’s definitely precise, but it has a rawness to it that goes beyond anything we’ve done recently,” asserts bassist Alex Webster. “We really worked super hard crafting these songs, practicing them, and getting them where we wanted to be more so than on any of our previous albums,” adds drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz. “And as Alex said, musically I think it’s the most raw sound we’ve had – and at the same time I think it’s our most focused, tightest and catchiest record.”

Having played in the region of two hundred shows around the globe in support of the titanic A Skeletal Domain, the quintet – rounded out by guitarists Rob Barrett and Pat O’Brien, and vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher – settled down to begin writing after completing their successful run on 2016’s Summer Slaughter tour. As has always been the case, there was no blueprint for what they wanted the full-length to be, rather letting it develop naturally with instruments in their hands. “Towards the end of the ‘A Skeletal Domain’ cycle we did talk about having some riffs that breathe a little more, but that was about it. When everybody started writing I believe it actually became a feel thing more than it ever has been with us,” says Mazurkiewicz. “That it wound up being a really raw, mostly straightforward kind of album wasn’t part of a big plan or anything,” Webster asserts. “We just tried to write the best songs we could, and this is how they turned out.” The aforementioned aggression, rawness and catchiness leap out from the speaker as soon as the listener hits play, “Only One Will Die” perhaps the most ruthless yet immediate album opener 2017 has seen. What follows is a relentless barrage of ferocious music that maintains the insanely high standards the unit have long held themselves to, and while there is a great diversity in dynamics there is never a let up in intensity. The devastating “Firestorm Vengeance”, for instance, sounds like the work of men only the most foolhardy would choose to mess with, likewise the title track and ultra-belligerent “Destroyed Without A Trace”. The vile, lurching passages of “Code Of The Slashers” play menacingly off against bloodthirsty thrashings, while “Scavenger Consuming Death” stands out as one of the heaviest additions to one of the weightiest catalogs in extreme music. With “Remaimed” – penned by O’Brien – unleashing some sickening tones that sound wrought from an instrument designed to devastate everything and the eerie droning breaking into “Hideous Ichor”, new flavors have been introduced to their sonic palette this time out. “We’re always looking for ways to move our sound forward while maintaining the style we’ve developed over the years,” Webster states. “I think we managed to do that with ‘Red Before Black’ – it has some new ideas, but you’ll also hear things on this album that would sound at home on our earlier releases. We want to grow as a band while staying true to our roots”.

With 2006’s Kill and the two releases that followed it – 2009’s Evisceration Plague and 2012’s Torture – the band forged a tight bond with renowned producer Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, Goatwhore), and for Red Before Black they chose to reunite with him. Comfortable and confident in his company, Webster asserts that “he understands death metal better than just about anyone, both as a producer and as a musician”, and with his Mana Studios located not far from their home base in Florida it was also very convenient for one of the hardest touring bands in metal. “We of course love working with Erik and he did an awesome job on the albums he did for us, but we just finished a long tour cycle and then worked extremely hard on writing and practicing these songs, so being close to home for the recording was a compelling factor too,” says Mazurkiewicz. “These days, we don’t all have to be there for the whole process any more, but if one of us was needed at the studio we could get there fairly quick.” Under Rutan’s watchful eye the sessions went smoothly and without a hitch, the only thing slowing them down being the attention to detail exercised by all involved, intent on perfecting their vision. With Vince Locke once more handling the artwork, fans can be assured that it suitably reflects the music lurking behind it. “Vince’s style has been a huge part of our band’s visual image since our very first album. With ‘Red Before Black’ he’s made another killer piece, and this time the viewer has the victim’s perspective, which is a little different for us.”

With 2017 seeing a slew of stunning new releases from death metal’s old guard – including Suffocation, Obituary and Dying Fetus – it’s been a landmark year both for the genre and its early innovators, and with Red Before Black Cannibal Corpse stand strong alongside their peers. “We’re proud to be part of a scene that has great, experienced bands that stick to their guns,” affirms Webster. “Death metal is an established form of underground music that’s here to stay, and the leadership bands like these have shown by staying true to the genre is no doubt part of the reason it has such longevity.”That Cannibal Corpse have carved out a career spanning almost three decades is testament to their work ethic, innovative songwriting, passion and devotion to extreme music – though it still remains an astounding feat to the members, as Webster makes humbly clear. “Who could have imagined this? When we started, even Black Sabbath hadn’t been around for three decades. There simply was no precedent for a lifelong career in metal, of any kind, let alone a relatively new form like death metal. We’ve been unbelievably lucky, and we are so grateful to our fans for making it possible.” In typically grounded fashion, they continue to forge ahead, seeing no end in sight, Webster stating he likes to think they have yet to write their best record, while Mazurkiewicz outlines their goals: “I would say we just want to keep it going, try to better ourselves – and finally open for Slayer!”

Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters are on tour with their latest album, a self-titled disc released June 9, 2017 on Organic Records. Lyrically driven, the songs of Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters blend the band’s old-school country roots attitude with their shared influences of rock and folk. Amanda says of the album, “I think it’s just about life and all that that entails. Including but not limited to death, strangers, birthdays, money, leaving, arriving, seasons, corruption, and love.”

“This is a band that does everything right,” says Goldmine’s Mike Greenblatt. “Platt deserves all that might come to her over this, her fifth (and best) album. Backed by pedal steel, electric guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, and vocal harmony, it’s Platt’s show as she writes, sings and co-produces. Complete with lyrics of introspection with the kind of words you can chew on long after the album ends, it also works on a lighter level by dint of the fact that it just sounds so damn good. Go as deep as you want. It’s all good, as they say.”

Based in Asheville, North Carolina, Amanda is a storyteller by nature with an incredible band backing her. Performing along with Amanda Anne Platt, The Honeycutters are Matt Smith on pedal steel and guitar, Rick Cooper on bass, Josh Milligan on drums and harmony vocals, and Evan Martin on keys and guitar.

There is an empathetic and charming wit ingrained in Amanda’s songwriting. She has a knack for accessing a deep well of emotion and applying it to her story-telling, whether she is writing from her own experiences or immersing herself into the melody of emotions in another person’s life.

“She’s soothing (even in the hurtin’ songs) and sobering (except for the drinkin’ songs) and nuanced in a way that I think tops even those rather famous ladies of the moment named Margo and Kacey… I’d be hard pressed to find a finer string of recordings from any band working in the classic country/mountain tradition in these last five years,” writes Music City Roots’ Craig Havighurst.

OLIVER BATES CRAVEN

Originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Oliver Bates Craven is a Nashville based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. The oldest son of a folk-singing preacher, his diverse musical upbringing included a family band, a decade of classical violin lessons, and ultimately skipping football practice to teach himself the guitar playing along to Hendrix records. Oliver has spent the last ten years as a professional musician, and from intimately crowded folk clubs to sold-out festivals, has found himself on North American and European stages more than a thousand times.

A founding member of the revered Americana band The Stray Birds, he has collaborated with such artists as The Wood Brothers, Keller Williams and Mandolin Orange, and worked in studios with producers such as Dan Knobler (Lake Street Dive, Rodney Crowell) and Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm). Stepping out of the band dynamic squarely to the center of the stage, he finds a voice and a style more uniquely his own. A poignant writer with soulful and powerful vocal and instrumental deliveries, accompanied by a sense of performance that honors nuance, movement and originality, his musicality is one of a clearly impassioned and tangible joy.

Rudiment

American based artist Rudiment (real name Stephen Wilson) has been a DJ for more than 20 years.
Growing up in Central Florida in the early to mid 90’s he experienced the explosion of dance music culture, and its rapid impact across America. Those experiences ultimately shaped and formed his life long passion in music as he steadily DJ’d until the early 2000’s. In 2006 he moved to East Tennessee where he would switch his focus from DJ’ing to delve into the world of Music Production. During this time he honed in on his craft creating a unique sound which in 2015 led to the inception of Rudiment. Keeping “the music” as his foundation and the core of what he wants to be known by, Rudiment with writing partner Kimball Collins released their first remix of the The Sol Brothers – Maharani on Talavera Records with critical acclaim in 2016. While his partnership with Kimball Collins continues to grow and take shape, expect to see many future releases from the two on the horizon with up coming releases on Emotional Content Recordings, Making You Dance Records, Magician on Duty, and David Hohme’s Where The Heart Is Records

The trio’s (Ezekiel, Lucas and Nomad in the Dark) tracks have proven equally effective in tiny darkened warehouses as well as in packed, international nightclubs, spun by some of the leading names in electronic music. Marley Carroll Bio:
Onstage, Carroll brings a more raw and improvisatory adaptation of his music to rapt audiences, combining live sampling, drum pads and looping with stunning and often unorthodox turntable skills. He has shared the stage with similarly-minded peers like Floating Points, Bonobo, and DJ Shadow and has appeared at groundbreaking music festivals across the country (Coachella, Decibel, Moogfest).
With Flight Patterns, Carroll has tuned his instruments skyward and infused his unique style of subtle and compelling dance music with samples and textures from the natural world. Bird songs, field recordings, gongs, deep basses, wooden drums and plaintive analog synths provide the substrate for expansive songs with the kind of three-dimensional depth that invites immersive, intentional listening.
“This all started with the crows,” he explains. “I work from a small home studio in the mountains surrounded on all sides by trees, and I began to feel this spooky intelligence all around me, like I was being watched. I became fascinated by their activities, their comings-and-goings, the little dramas that are playing out all around us, all the time. That led to an obsession with bird calls and communication and now it’s gotten to the point where I have a Cornell Ornithology Lab calendar hanging in my bedroom.”
Regarding his new label home, Carroll says: “Signing with Loci felt very natural. I’ve been touring partners and friends with Doug for a long time and he deserves a ton of credit for helping my music reach wider audiences. I’m immensely grateful for the opportunity and I hope it reaches fans of Loci that are open to something a little more uptempo.”

Brandon Audette Bio:
A Detroit, Michigan native, Brandon quickly found himself carpooling to warehouse parties in the late 90s and early 2000s. Needless to say he was hooked on the music, the energy, and the dance community in the city of Detroit.

Fast forward to 2010 where he started spinning records and
became known for his subtle but effective early evening sets as well as for his late night/early morning sunrise vibes. Style choices range from deep soulful house, techno, acid, disco, funk, to boogie. He’s had the pleasure of sharing the decks with with Stacey Pullen, Mano Le Tough, Dj Three, Ataxia, Golf Clap, and a plethora of other local favorites and respected international selectors.

Having moved to Asheville, NC in 2012 to be closer to nature, he again found himself searching for that feeling of community in Detroit. “Asheville has come a long way in the short 5 years I’ve been here. There wasn’t a whole lot going on as far as dance parties with house & techno. But now it seems there’s somewhere to go get down every night of the week.” After an amazing summer of memorable shows at Ellington Underground and All Go West Music Festival, Brandon is ready to continue supporting dance music culture in a small, but growing mountain town.

Every year, First Baptist Hendersonville partners with the Store House Ministry by providing gifts to help the needy children of Henderson County celebrate Christmas. This year our church has volunteered to “adopt” 100 children. You can help either individually or as a group or Sunday school class by purchasing gifts for a child/children.

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.

About the Artist

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

Join Professional Photographer Chuck Hill for this two-day workshop focusing on fall’s beauty.
This class will discuss and review panos, types of scenic photography and the equipment needed to make a photo pop.

Saturday
9:00 – 9:30am Meet & Greet
9:30 – 11:30am Class starts in classroom with discussion and examples of panos, types of scenic photography and the equipment needed.
11:30 -12:30pm Lunch (provided)
12:30 – 5:00pm Move to upper parking lot for hands-on learning of
Macro photography
Focus stacking
Panos

Hike to Upper Hickory Nut Falls where we will photograph the falls using various techniques including dragging the shutter and the use of neutral density filters

5:00 – 7:00pm Back from Falls

Free time for dinner (on your own) and set up tents, if needed

6:00pm – ? We will go to the top of the Park and photograph the Park at night.

Sunday

5:00 – 7:00am Rise and shine for an astrophotography class followed by sunrise in the upper parking lot

7:00 – 11:30am Free time to get breakfast, (not provided). explore

the park and photograph on your own.

11:30 – 12:30pm Lunch (provided)

12:30 – 4:00pm Computer class time where we will go over all filters and programs I use to enhance my scenic images. You should have your laptop with at least Photoshop installed.

Lunch on Saturday and Sunday included in Price. All other meals and lodging are at the expense of participants. Workshop attendees are responsible for bringing their own camera, computer with photo editing software, camping equipment and food outside of lunch during this workshop.
