There’s no better time to visit Western North Carolina than in the fall when leaves are exploding with color. The weather is still warm yet offers an evening crispness long forgotten from the hot, humid summer months. This year, the SERDC Symposium and Annual Membership Meeting will take place in Asheville, NC, just steps from the famed Biltmore Estate, minutes from an eclectic downtown and right beside the Blue Ridge Parkway.
This year’s Symposium aims to foster collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange within the recycling community. It serves as a platform for professionals to stay updated on industry trends, build partnerships, and contribute to the sustainable development of recycling practices. In addition, our 2023 Champions of the Southeast award winners will be announced and the SERDC membership will be able to get an update on this year’s work as well as vote in the 2024 Board of Directors.

Please join us at The 2nd Act in Hendersonville, NC for our first monthly book club meeting that strives to read books that create a closer knit and more inclusive community! We will meet virtually and in person monthly to discuss a book, so read the book and then join in the discussion in person or online every third Thursday. All are welcome! At the end of each meeting we will vote on the next book! The virtual club meeting will be in Zoom format and will meet 2.5 hours after the in-person meeting (8:00pm EST). There will be a myriad of offerings such as smoothies, lattes, matcha, tea, Cuban sandwiches, empanadas, sandwiches, salads, and more. In addition, guests will also be able to purchase frozen meal planning options, wine, beer, and cider. Large group and catering menu options are available upon request. Tori Frasher, owner and operator of The Market by Sage & Spice, is a Greenville, S.C. native who immediately fell in love with the beauty, hospitality, and culinary offerings she found upon her first visits to Asheville. After graduating from Furman University and a brief career in automotive marketing and sales, she moved to Asheville to pursue a career in international food, culture, and event planning. This pursuit led to the creation of Sage & Spice Catering, one of the premier catering and event management companies in Western North Carolina, in 2019 to focus on weddings, large gatherings, holiday events, and corporate functions in conjunction with Executive Chef Sergio Castro, formerly of Conosur Restaurant, and Chef Amanda Delgado. “Growing up in a large Lebanese family, my grandmother and great-grandmother taught me how important food can be to family and as a love language. I’m so happy that I can bring those lessons, our professional catering expertise and talents, and a wide array of local and international vendors together in one place – The Market by Sage & Spice.”, said Frasher. Every Wednesday afternoon, Puptart will be available for reading practice in the children’s picture book room. Help establish a joy of reading and develop early literacy skills. Business After Hours
Adam Rothman, professor of History at Georgetown University, will be speaking on Georgetown’s history of enslavement and his current research on Thursday, October 26 at 7 p.m. at the UNC Asheville Reuter Center, Manheimer Room.
Rothman is the director of the Center for the Study of Slavery and Its Legacies and co-editor of the recent book “Facing Georgetown’s History: A Reader on Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation” which details the university’s history of enslavement and its recent efforts to confront its past.
In “I Came As a Shadow,” John Thompson writes about Georgetown’s slaveholding legacy, especially the sale of 272 enslaved people in 1883 that was made to save the financially struggling university. Aside from tracing the descendants of the 272 individuals, Rothman’s research explores how institutions and communities confront their shameful pasts.
This event is part of the Common Word Community Read series, a set of lectures and discussions centered around a shared text with the goal of engaging a collective educational experience. The program is curated by Wiley Cash, New York Times bestselling author, alumnus of the class of 2000, and UNC Asheville’s Executive Director of Literary Arts. The selection for fall 2023 is “I Came As a Shadow” an autobiography by the late John Thompson, the head basketball coach at Georgetown University from 1972 to 1999, where he won the NCAA championship in 1984.
