Art Sturtevant – Tales from the Sturteverse
A one-night only performance, by a very funny human.
Art Sturtevant is a smart, funny comic with the interests of a 20-year old and the body of a middle-age man. His observations on pop culture, being a father and how you can change so much and so little over the span of decades have cracked up audiences all over the East Coast. Art has performed at Laughing Skull, Comedy Zones, Side Splitters, The Laugh Your Asheville Off Comedy Festival, Cola Con Comedy Festival, and — back in the day — NYC’s Comedy Cellar, Catch a Rising Star, Sweeps and Triple Inn. Art’s a contributing writer for Asheville Disclaimer, a weekly satire publication.
Tickets $12, can be purchased at the door, or follow the ticket link from this event to purchase online.

Poulenc | Gloria

Vive la France! Masterworks 4 celebrates the work of four very distinct French composers. Cellist Daniel Kaler, winner of the Payne Prize, dazzles with Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto. Then, the Asheville Symphony Chorus takes the stage to present Poulenc’s delightful Gloria, and the program closes with Berlioz’s grandiose La Marseillaise.

Craig Sandberg is leading a relatively new project entitled Grendel’s Mother.
They play medieval and Scandinavian influenced party music and have dubbed themselves “medieval rave” music. The band itself varies from a 2 to 4 piece plus a dancer.
We’ve talked them into coming in and playing in the Taphouse as a smaller version of the band, and then coming back this summer to rock the beer garden stage.
Come out and experience their medieval rave music for yourself.

Modern Strangers is an Asheville-based band playing high-energy, toe-tapping, and melodic rock music! A 4-piece combo of journeymen musicians, they take their varied influences and form them into a JanglePop juggernaut. Hard to pin down their sound, they’ve heard comparisons from The Beatles to The Pixies to early REM to Elvis Costello to The Kinks. Catchy songs, vocal harmonies and just the right amount of edge make these guys a fun night whether they’re playing originals or quirky covers.

Each full moon we gather from dusk until dawn to celebrate the cyclical, cosmic interplay of life through music, dancing and ritual under open sky. Our purpose is to experience joy, to heal ourselves through movement and to embody the truth of each moment through sound. Every gathering is an opportunity for us to practice living and breathing at a higher vibration, to acknowledge our unity of spirit and to ground this collective experience through our bodies and into our daily lives. We invite you to co-create this experience with us. We share a cultural identity that is rooted in a global, social phenomena beyond specific musical genres or religious associations. As we continue to grow, we will communicate and collaborate with our larger community around the world, celebrating our differences as well as our unified purpose to heal and to manifest The Vibe.

‘Lose Yourself to Dance Party’ w/ DJ Marley Carroll
“Lose Yourself To Dance” is Asheville’s premiere dance party series. Guided by his well-honed instincts developed over years of touring and club DJing, Marley Carroll guides packed audiences through a marathon set that is frequently surprising and always satisfying. From classic hip-hop and soul to contemporary indie dance hits to obscure afrobeat, funk, disco and everything in between, no genre or era is out-of-bounds. This is a dance party for fans of music!”
More about Marley Carroll:
Hailing from the misty mountains of Asheville, NC, Marley Carroll has been making waves as a thoughtful, sophisticated electronic producer with a penchant for melancholy melodies and warm, silvery vocals. Known as “the producer’s producer,” Carroll commands respect among his peers and a steadily-growing audience of fans. A classically trained pianist and percussionist, but never content to color inside the lines, he became the youngest ever to win the title of Best Scratch DJ for his home state of North Carolina – at 17. In the years since, he has never stopped evolving, undergoing a full transformation into a veteran producer, DJ, and dynamic live performer.
His self-produced 2007 debut album Melanaster was the result of meticulous bedroom alchemy, recalling a lost Radiohead LP submerged in ten feet of saltwater. The album’s sonic signature can be found somewhere between the beautiful haze of early ’90s shoegaze rock (My Bloody Valentine) and early 2000s IDM (Autechre, Squarepusher). Smeared, melancholy pop songs tethered to abstract electronic rhythms, or what NPR called “gorgeously subdued glitch-pop.”
In 2011, Carroll truly came into his own as a producer and live performer. He developed a solo PA set to bring a more raw and improvisatory vision of his music to live audiences, combining vocals, turntables, hardware controllers, and analog Moog synth. His onstage performances are exercises in understated talent that mix live vocals with stunning and unorthodox turntablist skills over a bed of sophisticated electronica. In 2012, he toured with forward-thinking producers like Shigeto, Dabrye, and Emancipator, and appeared at groundbreaking music festivals across the country (Moogfest, Decibel, Coachella). The galvanic dance floor energy of larger audiences infused his drum-driven 2012 EP R&S / Cedars, and its title track garnered a favorable feature from XLR8R. Steadily, national attention was building for Carroll’s unique style of subtle and compelling dance music.
In December 2013 he released Sings, a new full-length LP that combines the best of his recent instrumental work with his considerable skills as a songwriter. A densely propulsive electronic album rooted in forest imagery, Sings received universal critical acclaim, drawing praise from tastemakers like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Bandcamp and Impose Magazine. Sings was named NC’s Best Album Of 2013 by YES! Weekly.
“Marley Carroll is connoisseur of groove, a tastemaker with a diverse palette and great attention to detail. Gifted in the dark arts of composition, production and turntablism, Marley Carroll is a veteran in the making.” – Emancipator
Marley Carroll is currently unsigned. He releases music via Melanaster Records, a self-run label.

Side Hustle
Originally from the cultural landscape of South Florida, singer/songwriter/guitarist, Anton Laplume relocated to Jacksonville, FL. Laplume emerged from the blues scene as the lead guitar player and band director for international blues band, The Rockin’ Jake Band. Laplume toured with the band throughout 2014 and 2015, across the U.S. and Canada. Known for his strong guitar skills, he enjoyed being a go-to for many local artists before creating, Side Hustle.
Sean Thomas (vocals/bass) is a key component in the new sound emerging from the band. Thomas was a key member in one of Jacksonville’s premier funk/jam bands Herd of Watts, routinely playing festivals around Florida, as well as up and down the east coast.
Billy Begley (keys/synth) is a newly added member who brings bold and creative ideas to the band’s catalog. He brings a traditional touch with his classical piano upbringing and provides a modern electronic improvisational flair with his jamtronica and subtractive synthesis background. As a founding member of Lucky Costello, a Jacksonville band touring across the Southeast for the last five years, Begley is reaching out into new territory by collaborating with talented artists to create as much new music as possible.
Aaron Plotz (drums) anchors the band with his high-energy performance and talents grounded in a classical percussion training. Plots has collaborated with heavy weights such as Tony Steve, Richard Kirkland, Charlotte Mabrey and Danny Gottleib. Aaron has found much success in the Jacksonville arena as the go-to drummer, sharing the stage with numerous national acts and occupying festival slots with some of the best Jacksonville has to offer.
The band’s composition is an entertaining fusion of singer/songwriter arrangements with improvisational elements of jazz, transitional grooves of funk, melodic awareness of pop, and the raw emotion of blues rock.

The History of Tea
Camellia Sinensis is an evergreen shrub native to Southeast Asia. It’s leaves, when discerningly picked and skillfully dried, produce the second most consumed beverage in the world: tea. Since the plant was first discovered to produce a stimulating beverage over 4500 years ago in China, nations all over the world have developed their own unique tea culture and methods of production. In this class, we will dive deep into the storied history of Camellia Sinensis, learn about the many ways the plant is cultivated and taste different styles of tea.

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.
In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
Winter can be the most beautiful time of the year at Chimney Rock. Leafless trees make for expansive views of Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge. We’ll use the winning entries on our website and Facebook album, and you’ll win some fun prizes. Photos must be taken within the Chimney Rock section of the Park.

YWCA of Asheville is proud to march in the 2019 Women’s March on Asheville on Sunday, January 20th in downtown Asheville, and you are invited to join us.
Please meet at 10:30 am in front of Pack’s Tavern to march together in solidarity with the mission of the Women’s March:
“The mission of Women’s March is to harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change. Women’s March is a women-led movement providing intersectional education on a diverse range of issues and creating entry points for new grassroots activists & organizers to engage in their local communities through trainings, outreach programs and events. Women’s March is committed to dismantling systems of oppression through nonviolent resistance and building inclusive structures guided by self-determination, dignity and respect.”
We also want to share this statement from YWCA USA: “In light of recent concerns and news reports about anti-Semitism and financial transparency, we have undertaken considerable due diligence regarding our continued support of the Women’s March, including direct conversations with lead organizers of the March and with our peer organizations in the women’s advocacy, racial justice and social justice spaces. We are pleased to see strong statements denouncing anti-Semitism and bigotry prominently posted on the homepage of the Women’s March, which have also been reflected in the various conversations that we have had.
Our decision to continue to support the January 19th Women’s March events is based on the existing alignment between YWCA’s work to empower women and advance racial justice, and core issues that are central to the Women’s March policy platform. As with other national partnerships, our engagement with the Women’s March is both long-term and substantive: we have and will continue to focus on the policy issues that further our mission to eliminate racism and empower women, while we do the long-term, hard work of building a truly inclusive movement.”
We look forward to seeing you downtown on Sunday, January 20th in front of Pack’s Tavern (20 S. Spruce Street at City/County Plaza).

January marks the first of our traveling rides for Sunday ladies mountain bike rides and we’re headed to Payne’s Creek in north Georgia. Meet in the Sav-Mor parking lot in Brevard at 10:45 if you plan to carpool (make sure you have plenty of gas prior as there is not a planned stop in route). Carpool will leave promptly at 11:00. Drive down is estimated to take 1 hour 45 minutes so we’ll plan to be in the trailhead parking lot at Payne’s Creek at 1:00 to ride at 1:15. For folks coming in from other locations than Brevard, plan to be at Payne’s Creek by 1:00 to make the ride. The location listed as the address for this event is the campground which is a little farther down the road. Simply follow the signs to the trailhead parking area once you get to the main entrance. Trails at Payne’s Creek are directional and fun. Total route should be right around 10 miles. Social, no-drop pace. Prior to the ride please check that your bike is in good working order and that your tires are properly inflated. And bring water and a snack for on the ride. Feel free to message within this event to arrange carpooling. Hope to ride with you soon!

We are honored to share our passion for our Beloved Black Bears in our exhibit at the “FW Gallery” in Woolworth Walk – downtown Asheville. We are grateful to have been chosen to be their Featured Artists. We want to also thank the many lovely people who work at Woolworth Walk and have supported and assisted us with the exhibit.
The FW Gallery exhibit will end Tuesday, January 29th at 6pm. Our permanent artist booth #229 downstairs “Beloved Black Bear” has over 50 black bear canvases 11×14 at $75 each. We hope you will stop by to visit.
We are happy to say that many black bear canvases have been sold and are now adorning many homes. Our wish is for all of us to share our compassion for the black bear with our friends, family, and neighbors and create connections with the bears giving them a voice.
