Ben Phan LIVE at Sanctuary Brewing Company
Jan 10 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Sanctuary Brewing Company

Join Sanctuary Brewing Company and Ben Phan, Guitarist and Songwriter on Thursday January 10th, 2019 for an evening of incredible music by an even more incredible person!

A year of jazz conservatory at Virginia Commonwealth University left Ben Phan rebellious: uninspired by the environment and fed-up with the structure, he knew he didn’t want to be an academic musician.

So Phan began his professional career as a founding member of the Richmond Afrobeat Movement, a blend of jazz, funk and African dance music which earned significant attention in the South, including a TV appearance and other media features.

A stint as Musical Director for Free Run Wine Merchants gave Phan a chance to develop his professional skills, setting up musical events for the company, which included solo jazz gigs as well as band arrangements.

Phan then joined a bluegrass and folk band, the Rusty Strings, and discovered the joy in sitting on a porch and singing together with others, simply for the love of music.

In 2014, Phan decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail and his life changed forever. Along with everything else he needed, he carried a mini-guitar on his back and became known by the name “Shredder” because of how he “shredded the guitar” when he played. Five months of travel on foot, 2,668 miles from the Mexican border all the way into Canada, playing for himself and the people he met, transformed his relationship with music. He began writing songs, drawn from his experiences on the trail as well as his past struggles with depression, addiction, loss and love. The music offered hope and solace, to him and to his audiences.

The time on the Pacific Crest Trail renewed Phan’s passion for music. With a prolific body of original work, he returned to Asheville to record his first solo EP, “Hold On, Let Go.” He assembled a band, made up of some of the best musicians in Asheville: besides liking his music, they appreciate the dedication and professionalism Phan brings to his work. The band released it’s debut album, “Dreams in Modern Folk”, to a sold out crowd at the Altamont Theatre, one of Asheville’s finest listening rooms. The band continued to perform successful shows over the following year, refining their high energy sound which combines fiery improvisation with rich composition. This led to a successful kickstarter campaign to fund their next album, “Fear is the Teacher”, which the band is currently recording with Grammy winning producer Matt Williams. Phan continues to perform with the band, as a solo artist, and in collaborations with other musicians; he has also built a successful guitar teaching practice, which he finds a great source of inspiration.

Phan is a prolific poet, songwriter, and guitarist, with the soul of an improviser. He crafts his songs to give room for improvisation, presence, and self-expression in the moment. He believes that the best live music is when everyone playing is co-creating – which means that every one of his concerts offers audiences a different sound and a unique experience.

Groove on OM
Jan 10 @ 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm
Waynesville Bellydance at Raqs Beledi

Woo hoo! We had a successful first Groove on OM introductory session! Thank you SO much for being a part of it!

My name is Amber and I’m the owner of Kleidoscope Yoga. I’m an instructor, artist, dancer, cat lover, coffee consumer and I’m over the moon to introduce you back (or to) Groove on OM!

Our first 6-week session begins on Thursday, December 6th through January 10th for only $60! You’re welcome to drop in (I know life is hectic and I’m happy to accommodate) – drop in price is $13 cash but you’ll save $18 with the full session. To purchase the session, my safe paypal link is below. Of course cash is always accepted as well if paypal isn’t your thing!

If you want to try #GrooveonOM once for the drop in price and decide you love it – you can still purchase the rest of the sessions as a bundle at $10 a class! Even if you join us in the 3rd week – you’ll still save some cashola. I know it’s important this time of year.

If you’re like me, dancing brings a fresh perspective to life. It releases stagnant energy and makes space for new ideas. It’s MAGIC And DAMN if it doesn’t feel good!

Dancing has been a beautiful form of communication since the beginning of time and there IS something primal about letting your body just move to the music without a care in the world. I believe you just have to find that comfortable space to let that happen.

We will take a few moments to greet one another, set intentions and then get our groove on with all sorts of different types of music. There is no choreography, just the opportunity to let your body find it’s rhythm and flow no matter what that feels or looks like!

What I want is for Groove on OM to grow so more women like you and I have a place to PLAY, let loose, lift each other up and create some powerful magic together. If you haven’t seen my video of the day I was struck by Devine inspiration check it out in the feed.

I hope you find inspiration in it as well.

****Just a quick note. Please respect that there will be no drugs or alcohol permitted, you must be at least 18 years of age and what happens at Groove on OM stays at Groove on OM.***

Again, here is the pricing for you – $60 for 6 weeks beginning Thursday, Dec 6th or $13 cash to drop in.

Dress comfortably – or in costume – come dressed in a way that calls to you.

I can’t wait to see you there and by the way, if you have a tune that gets your booty shakin’ let me know! I’m always looking for music to add to the playlist.

Namaste ♥

Adwela & the Uprising is a nationally touring seven-piece award winning roots reggae band based out of Virginia, United States of America. The music created by Adwela & the Uprising is conscious music that spreads truth. Adwela’s soul stirring lyrics give you no choice but to come to a new overstanding about the world we live in and who you choose to be.

Adwela & the Uprising was named Best New Artist in 2015 by Virginia Reggae out of Virginia Beach. They have since blossomed with several national tours under their belt. Adwela & the Uprising’s resume speak volumes by way of media coverage, television appearances, and rave reviews.

Adwela & the Uprising bring such a unique sound they most certainly stand out in their own right. Musical influences stem from icons such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Jacob Miller, Damian Marley, just to name a few. Adwela & the Uprising will also be touring internationally in September 2018. Adwela & the Uprising continue to grow a faithful following with each performance and tour, and in doing so are grateful for the people they have met along the way. In Times of Seismic Sorrows
Jan 11 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Center for Craft

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Tess Darling
Wildlife Sketches

Tess Darling’s creative pastime developed into a career when she attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville from 2008-2013. She sacrificed an 11-year competitive tennis vocation to pursue her Bachelor in Fine Arts, acquiring the Tucker S. Cooke Scholarship for Studio Drawing and a Minor in Psychology as well. With a psychological mindset, Tess focused on figurative work, creating portraits and nudes that emphasized isolation, which continues to be a recurring theme throughout her career.

While attending the university, Tess became a River Arts District Artist for WhiteSPACE Gallery where she sold pieces from her series Mud. Each painting was full of color and movement, as the nude figures blended in to their environment, representing the mesh of personae that blend into our virtual world.

In 2015, Tess took a road trip around the American Southwest. The unique landscape inspired a series of acrylic paintings entitled Awe, which were showcased at the Grovewood Gallery. Her paintings depicted locations in Pisgah National Forest and the French Broad River, each piece painted with colorful, gestural movement and pockets of tight detail.

Her current series Fauna portrays wildlife inspired by her road trip, as well as animals from Western North Carolina. She retains an abstract modality, creating sketch-like paintings. The subjects are painted with a certain realism, but with quick and efficient proportions to give them a study aesthetic.

Tess continues to work on her drawings and paintings in Asheville, NC. Her most recent wildlife paintings and drawings are on display at the Mark Bettis Studio and Gallery, located in the River Arts District. She’s a member of the River Arts Distrtict Artists and of a local, charity artist group called The Saints of Paint.

FAUNA
Wildlife Sketches in Acrylic and Ink
By Tess Darling

The artist renders her encounters with wildlife in a linear feel. Interactions with different species are recorded in sketches to capture the observed moment. The energy of the animal is mirrored in visible traces, accentuated by a minimalist setting. In transferring the subject outside its natural realm, the artist uses her self-constructed, artistic impression to represent the human condition. Balancing this condition with the animal form, the effect is a visual interpretation of the coexistence between a living animal and the human who painted it.
