Hands on a Hardbody Musical
Jun 7 @ 7:30 pm
Asheville Community Theatre

“this scrappy, sincere new musical brings a fresh, handmade feeling to Broadway” – NY Times

Is there one action you could take that would immediately shift your life from stalling out to taking off?

How hard could it be to just stand with your hand on a truck?

For 10 hard-luck Texans, a new lease on life is so close they can touch it. Under a scorching sun for days on end, armed with nothing but hope, humor and ambition, they’ll fight to keep at least one hand on a brand new “hardbody” Nissan truck in order to win it. In the hilarious, hard-fought contest, only one winner can drive away with the American dream. Based on a true story!

With a terrific score by Amanda Green and Trey Anastasio and a book by Pultizer Prize winning playwright Doug Wright, this musical will be one you’ll cherish for a long time!

Darrell Scott
Jun 7 @ 8:00 pm – 11:59 pm
The Orange Peel

Darrell Scott
plus Eleanor Underhill
Show: 8pm
Doors: 7pm
$25 – $35
Partially seated show
Ages 18+

Tickets & Info: www.theorangepeel.net/event/darrell-scott/

“I look like an insider because of everything I‘ve done but I always felt like an outsider,” Darrell Scott says. “And that’s important—to be an outsider.” He’s also a master.

Whether its’ rock, folk, country or blues, Darrell Scott, the 4-time Grammy nominated Nashville songwriter, has written hits all the way from Brad Paisley and the Dixie Chicks to Del McCoury, Sam Bush and Keb Mo; contributing songs to three of 2016’s best albums alone. ‘It’s not surprising that Scott wrote nine of the 14 songs on his own new album, “Couchville Sessions,” and less surprising that he wrote three songs with the like-minded Americana artist Hayes Carll on Carll’s magnificent new disc, “Lovers and Leavers,”’ in addition to “1000 Things” from Sarah Jarosz’s award winning “Build Me Up From Bones” album.

What’s more surprising is that Scott came off of a year and a half of touring in Robert Plant’s Band of Joy with a co-write on R&B star Anthony Hamilton’s new recording, “Save Me,” the opening track on “What I’m Feelin.” Over the past two years Darrell has produced, co-written and performed on three songs from Zac Brown’s latest project “Heavy Is the Head,” in addition to producing Jonathan Edwards latest and Malcolm Holcombe’s upcoming 2017 release, “Pretty Little Troubles.” But these partnerships all makes sense: Although they hail from different genres, these artists are master craftsmen at fitting words to notes.

Witness his ability to make just about any instrument talk, listen to his vocals and songwriting to hear him contain every emotion between joy and pain within one verse in his singing and in his pen. Nowadays he’s taking the outsider role even more seriously; after 23 years in Nashville he spent the last year devoting himself to a self-sufficient lifestyle in the country while simultaneously putting together his best album in years.

Dex Romweber – Sly Grog Lounge Asheville, NC
Jun 7 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Sly Grog Lounge

Dex Romweber with Skunk Ruckus and Mike Kane
Fri, Jun 7, 2019, 8:00 PM
Sly Grog Lounge
271 Haywood Street
Asheville, NC 28801

Dex Romweber is nothing less than an icon of the American music underground. Pioneering the template for the stripped to-the-essentials guitar/drums duo format in the (should be) world famous psycho-surf-rockabilly-garage-punk combo Flat Duo Jets—so often emulated, so rarely duplicated—Dex continues his resurgence with the new album Is That You In The Blue? With sister Sara on drums, the Dex Romweber Duo is a potent combo that’ll get your leg twitching with the beat and your heart racing -and sometimes breaking- with the feral excitement of music. If it don’t, you might want to consider turning in your “I Heart Rock n Roll” badge. Seriously.

In Dex, you have someone who burrows into the guts of American roots music with a uniquely alchemical mania; he’s a man clearly bored with, or oblivious to, genre constraints. With a mix of originals and obscure nuggets from rock and roll’s dusky back closets, the DRD romps through the sweaty cinder block studios of Memphis of the 50’s, channels street corners on the wrong side of town with existential blues and instrumentals that’d find a home in a Tarantino spy flick.

For pure rock and roll at its most glorious, Dex, his vintage Silvertone guitar and Sara’s wall of sound drums kick out the jams, mf’ers, on “Jungle Drums,” the dragstrip rave-up “Gurdjieff Girl” and the soundtrack for your next knife fight at the juvey home “Climb Down.” Bust out your hip flask and hand jive to heaven to that wicked Bobby Fuller beach party groove on “Wish you Would,” or strut down the Rio strand to the buoyant Bossa Nova throw down “Brazil”—a classic that runs a sonic spark plug from Xavier Cugat to Tav Falco’s Panther Burns.

Beyond the wild ruckus the Duo conjures so well, Is That You in the Blue? is colored by Dex’s broken romantic trips to the deep tunnel of un-love. From the slinky, cinematic revenge noir of “The Death of Me,” to the unhinged, edge of the abyss vibe of “Nowhere” to the jazzy, ghostly howl at the “Midnight Sun,” he’s on a dark and sometimes vengeful ride he ain’t taking alone. And the title track has as bitter and liberating a kiss off line that’s ever been sung, the one we’ve all wished we could have come up with when she was walking out the door.

For Is That You In The Blue?, recorded at Southern Culture on the Skids Rick Miller’s studio in North Carolina, DRD filled in their already formidable sound with Tarheel luminaries from the bands The Old Ceremony and Savage Knights, as well as Rick Miller himself and fellow SCOTS Mary Huff. Since their last Bloodshot album, Ruins of Berlin (2009), the DRD recorded a 7” single of hillbilly folk-blues with Jack White as well as a live album recorded at his Third Man record store in Nashville.

“Michael Martin, apart from being a long-time friend of The Scene and patron of the arts in Muncie, is the creative force behind Mike Martin & the Beautiful Mess – a gritty Americana group with with Irish folk and country influences. Their high energy performance is the driving force behind a repertoire of originals and familiar covers, all performed with authenticity and roots-based soul.”

MVD Entertainment Group:
“Mike Martin has been compared to Dylan, Cash and Woody Guthrie but one listen will give you proof that Martin is an American original. In the baptism by fire approach to the road Martin and his band The Beautiful Mess is like when Neil Young joined forces with Crazy Horse, or when Tom Petty met The Heart Breakers.”

“…a gritty Americana group with Irish folk and country influences.”

Scoundrel’s Lounge Live at Triskelion
Jun 7 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Triskelion Brewing Company

Scoundrel’s Lounge is pure Rock and Soul drawing on their influences of old blues to house party rock and roll, and creating a buzz around the Asheville-Waynesville area that’s guaranteed to get people moving. This trio of guitar, bass, and drums with over 60 years of combined experience are professionals at playing to the room. There’s no place too big or small.

Guitarist and vocalist Chris “Lombo” Lombardi has been around the block a few times. Growing up in New England and playing the bar circuit when he was 17 gave him the confidence to to thrive as a musician. After moving to the west coast, Lombo became part of the North West blues circuit and then played in the house band at the famous Blue Lamp in San Francisco, where he graced the stage with some serious players like Zigaboo Modeliste and Kenny Neal. He’s also had the privilege to open up for acts such as James Brown, Flogging Molly, and Booker T.

Anthony Gibson has been playing the drums for well over 20 years.Growing up he was molded by his parent’s love of music. From his earliest memories he was singing harmonies between Dad’s falsetto and Mom’s lead melody. Inspired by the likes of John Bonham, Neil Peart, and Bill Ward, he cut his teeth playing the drums when he was 15 yrs old. Combining the
thunder of heavy metal, the dynamics from a jazz ensemble, and the polish of a rock band with three part harmonies, he’s taken a bit from everything he’s learned and has created a signature sound.Anthony has great feel for what a song needs, and a voice that can lead and follow.

Like most, Jeff started playing in High School, but it was winning a senior year talent show with a group of classmates, that really made him want to dive deeper into music. Following a few years at UNC-Wimington on a Music Education path, Jeff transferred to UNC-Asheville where he finished with a degree in Music / Audio Engineering. Playing with some local bands around Asheville at the time gave him great experience onstage, opening for acts such as Edwin McCain, Phil Keaggy and War. ‘One day I got a call from an old roommate of mine from Wilmington, who had settled in Nashville, said he was wondering if I would like to come that way and record a little?…..Sure…why not” Jeff spent five years in Nashville, TN playing with various bands, recording demos and building recording computer systems for the music industry. “I worked at MARS music (now defunct) and had gone back to school and earned some computer certificates. It was teaming up with some co-workers from the store that got me in with their business (although short lived), building recording systems for some Music Row clients”. It was that time working with computers that Jeff took a different career path, but still maintaining playing music. Moving back to the Asheville area in 2002, Jeff has played with many local groups including Female singer-songwriters (Ashley Chambliss, Leigh Glass), a Dance/Party/Wedding band (the Atomic Sauce), a Jazz/Blues quartet (the Kalyn Conner Band), and an instrumental Rock guitar player (Robert DiMaio). Although there were some down times due to that ‘real life / real job thing’, and some minor medical issues, Jeff has recently teamed up with the Blues / Soul / Rock sounds of the Scoundrel’s Lounge…….

They”re currently working in the studio to put out some recordings of original material. One example currently available is the track titled Winning showcasing their love for good ol fashion rock and roll.
