Tui Na: Chinese Bodywork w/Nate Novgrod
Mar 16 @ 9:00 am – Mar 17 @ 6:00 pm
Center for Massage & Natural Health

16 CEU’s, NCBTMB and NCAAOM Certified

You will leave this course with:
• A base knowledge of the foundational Tui Na strokes, techniques and approaches.
• An understanding of when and how to appropriately apply these techniques.
• An understanding of the proper body mechanic approaches to use when applying Tui Na techniques in order to prevent wear and tear on the body.
Tui Na can be easily integrated into any style of massage practice and will provide the therapist with a set of new techniques and a different approach to body mechanics. This course is primarily hands on and teaches practical techniques that can be applied immediately.

A little about the modality:
Tui Na is a traditional Chinese form of massage. Its name translates to push and grasp. It is a simple, effective way to work soft tissue, mobilize joints, and relax tension to bring balance to the body. One of the oldest forms of bodywork, Tui Na has been passed down by families and taught in both schools and martial arts traditions. Traditionally, Tui Na was done completely clothed. In this course we will do both clothed and disrobed work so participants should come prepared to spend the weekend giving and receiving bodywork.

Your instructor: Nate Novgrod NCBTMB#1002 & NCCAOM #163852:
Nate practices as a Licensed Acupuncturist in Waynesville, NC and has been a life long student of tradi-tional Chinese martial arts ranging from Tai Chi to Ba Gua. He learned a traditional system of Tui Na in an apprenticeship style education from his martial arts teachers. He also learned a more modern approach during his training at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. He has taught this course for many years and enjoys the hands on nature of the weekend.

MountainTrue

Sign up here: https://mountaintrue.org/event/ash-inventory-training/

Are you concerned about the future of our forests? We need people to help us improve our ability to effectively protect our trees. As part of our Save Pisgah’s Ashes campaign, we are planning to treat ash trees in Pisgah to protect them from the Emerald Ash Borer. However, there are ash trees all over WNC, many that we have not yet documented, and therefore, cannot treat them. We are calling on the adventurous people of WNC to help us find the ash trees in our region. In this training, you will learn how to identify ash trees, assess them for signs of Emerald Ash Borer, collect data on the trees, and how to send us that data, so we can use it to inform our ash tree treatment. This training is free, but please bring your own lunch and water. If you have a gps, bring that too!

Watch the Skies, WNC 2019
Mar 16 @ 10:00 am – 6:30 pm
Disorganized Play Foundation

We welcome you to join us in playing a megagame called “Watch the Skies”.
Megagames are like very large board-games, with elements of role-playing games and wargames rolled in. Think of it like a mixture of Model United Nations and a LARP. We encourage you to come in costume, as we know you’ve always wanted a labcoat.

Megagames involve anything from 30 to three or four hundred players. Watch the Skies (the game we are playing) has been played by groups, universities, and schools all over the world. We are going to run with 40 players.

Despite the large number of players, everybody will be playing in the same game – we will be grouped into teams, each team playing one of 7 or 8 real countries in the world plus a team representing the world’s news media.

There will also be one mysterious team of aliens from another world.

The story of the game is that we are in the real world of the year 2025, just a few years from now.

In this game, the conspiracy theories about the existence of aliens and UFOs are in fact true – though the people of the world do not know that yet. Deciding when to admit publicly to the world that aliens are real will be an important question for you all to discuss right from the start.

You, as the players, mostly represent important government leaders: Prime Ministers, Presidents, Diplomats, Generals and Scientists. You will, during the game, have to deal with real world crises such as wars and earthquakes – BUT – at the same time deal with an increasing UFO menace without creating world-wide panic and terror.

In the game you will be making deals and treaties with other teams – trying to increase the wealth and advantages of your country, and possibly even getting into conflicts using your Armies, Navies, and Special Agents. The game is all about how you interact with the other teams. The important thing will be to make sure your country is safe and secure and does well.

The game rules are not complicated – the designer of the game says “If you’re not sure what to do – find someone on another team and talk to them – you never know, they may have information for you”.

The game runs from 10AM to 6PM on Saturday, March 16th at Freeland Hall on the Montreat Conference Center, Montreat, NC. Food will not be served, so please pack in a lunch. We will have a microwave on-site. There will be an optional cool-down casual dinner and drinks at Dark City Deli in downtown Black Mountain afterwards for any players that want to discuss the game. Join us, and get the inside scoop on what others were actually doing!

Due to adult themes and the frantic pace of the day, we ask that all attendees be at least 16 years old.

Watch the Skies, WNC will take place at the same location as AVL Scarefest and Seekerpalooza:

Freeland Hall,
318 Georgia Terrace
Montreat, NC 28757

Crafty Historian: Penny & CD Spinners, a STEM activity
Mar 16 @ 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
WNC Historical Association & Smith-McDowell House

Saturday, March 16, 2019 10:30am – 12:30pm $5 per crafter
Making a toy! How can this be a STEM activity? What is STEM, anyway? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. From an educational perspective this combines these disciplines in different ways to create awareness of how these are inter-related. So many crafts fall under these categories
Spinning toys have much in common with some of these concepts. A top or spinner has to balance for one thing. Decorations on a spinner can create optical illusions or allow color hues to change. Plus, they are lots of fun.
We will be making a simple Penny Spinner first so that we can experiment with various color and illusion possibilities. Then, we will will use a CD disk to decorate with our favorite designs that we have learned about and make a ‘fancy’ version.
This activity is best with children who have fine motor skills for cutting (scissors), measuring and coloring. An adult is always welcome to help young crafters. Adults are also welcome to make spinners, too, but they must pay the $5 crafting fee. There is a limit of 12 youngsters, so reservations are required by filling out the form in the ticketing box below. You’ll get a confirmation email and any extra information that might be needed.
Still have questions? email Lisa (the Crafty Historian) at [email protected]

Currently they are building the region’s first permanent non-military academy for internationalists. How to Help Your Leash Reactive Dog Free Help Session
Mar 16 @ 11:30 am – 1:00 pm
Animal Hospital of North Asheville

Saturday, March 16th starting at 11:30am
Location: Animal Hospital of North Asheville Education Room
Presented by Tristan Rehner-Fleurant, MS, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, CBATI of Pet Behavior Aid
People Only.
No Registration required. No fee to attend. Everyone welcome!

Does your dog growl, bark, lunge, and just get all into a tizzy when he sees other dogs or people? If so this class is for you. Learn body language so that you can better know what to expect, what steps you can take to prevent your dog from going into this state of mind, and lots more.

A little about our Free Help Sessions:
Our goal is to teach you what you need to know to help your pet. As much as we wish we could include your pet in this class, it is for humans only, so please leave all those sweet and wonderful pets at home.

These Help Sessions are free to the public on a first come, first seated basis. Please be aware that Animal Hospital of North Asheville will be seeing patients while the Help Session is in progress so some of our parking will be reserved for the families of patients needing care. Thank you for understanding.

In case of inclement weather, the class will be canceled. If you have any doubt about whether the class will be held, check our Facebook page or call Animal Hospital of North Asheville at 828-253-3393.
