Kusama: Infinity
OCTOBER 8 – Monday, 6:45pm
Cost: $10 special event (Museum Members receive a 50% discount on popcorn or a fountain drink!)
Tickets sold at the Grail Moviehouse box office or online
Meet at the Grail Moviehouse (45 S. French Broad Avenue, Asheville 28801)
Now the top-selling female artist in the world, Yayoi Kusama overcame impossible odds to bring her radical artistic vision to the world stage. For decades, her work pushed boundaries that often alienated her from both her peers and those in power in the art world. Kusama was an underdog with everything stacked against her: the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II, life in a dysfunctional family that discouraged her creative ambitions, sexism and racism in the art establishment, mental illness in a culture where that was particularly shameful, and even continuing to pursue and be devoted to her art full time on the cusp of her 90s. In spite of it all, Kusama has endured and created a legacy of artwork that spans the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation art, performance art, poetry, and literary fiction. After working as an artist for over six decades, people around the globe are experiencing her installation Infinity Mirrored Rooms in record numbers, as Kusama continues to create new work every day. Introduction and Q&A with Lola Clairmont, Curatorial Assistant.
Presented in partnership with the Grail Moviehouse.

Listen to the compass of your heart. All you need lies within you.
– Mary Anne Radmache
Beneath the layers of the thinking mind and amidst the hussle and bussle of daily life, there dwells a kernel inside each of us that is always present, still and connected. When we are able to access this inner world, we can begin to move through life with more compassion, joy and contentment.
The practice of meditation is one road into this dwelling place. In this four-week Introduction to Meditation series we will practice many accessible avenues for exploring meditation including breath awareness, mantra, mindfulness and yoga nidra.
This series will guide the practitioner within to develop a personal relationship with meditation and to begin cultivating a home practice.
All are welcome! Come as you are.
About Erin:
Using all the senses through the practices of mindful, alignment-based asana, meditation, yoga nidra, pranayama, altar making, chanting, and sound journey, Erin strives to facilitate a safe space for students to move inward. She guides sequences that move slowly and mindfully encouraging self-exploration and cultivation of body awareness. Erin has been practicing yoga and meditation since 2000 and is grateful to have been guiding yoga classes and workshops since February 2007. “We live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love.”-Tennessee Williams
Transforming pain and injustice into love and compassion is a rendering that has been universal to poets and prophets for centuries. In present times, choosing to amplify community and positivity through art can seem like a radical act. With the arrival of People Are My Drug, Phil Cook is taking the spark from lights left on by musical heroes and offering a torch for listeners as they navigate their own dark corners. Where 2015’s Southland Mission illuminated for listeners what Phil Cook hears in his head, this latest record lays bare the way that music makes him feel. Side A alone, culminating with the shiver-inducing “Another Mother’s Son,” has the capacity to light a fire in even the coldest of hearts.
Having only recently stepped to the center of the stage as a solo artist, Cook now takes a moment, citing the power of community as his thesis statement. Each track asserts that he alone is no greater than the sum of the people who have brought him to this moment. Instead of standing on the shoulders of his heroes, Cook is humbly kneeling at their feet. Since Southland Mission, Cook has performed with childhood heroes including Mavis Staples, Bruce Hornsby, John Prine, Amy Ray and The Blind Boys of Alabama. Cook notes, “I see life on a timeline that includes multi-generations. As someone who has sought mentors my whole life, I am honoring the people who shaped who I am, not only musically, but spiritually, emotionally and personally.” He brings that forward in every note on People Are My Drug.
Cook has firmly planted his roots in his adopted hometown of Durham, NC for the last decade, while simultaneously maintaining a musical presence in the upper-Midwest where he was raised. Cook and his band recorded and mixed in both Wisconsin and North Carolina, finishing the record in ten days. The result is a spiritual tour de force, delivered from the gut with open arms. Enlisting Brad Cook as producer was a given, as the two Cooks have spent their entire lives working alongside one another. They’ve long developed an honest working relationship based on the love of family and community, as well as staying true to oneself artistically.
His band, The Guitarheels, comprised of drummer JT Bates, bassist Michael Libramento and pianist James Wallace, forged a common language touring the world with Cook. Fueled by the power of that chemistry, Cook crafted each new song with reverence for each players’ artistic brilliance. He imagined vocalist Tamisha Waden (Foreign Exchange) soaring above “Steampowered Blues” and turned to collaborator Amelia Meath (Sylvan Esso) to co-write “Miles Away”, a plainly honest song about the complexity of emotional proximity. He heard Brevan Hampden’s distinct sanctified tambourine in his head the whole time he was writing for the sessions. The composition of the record plays as a love letter to Phil’s greatest inspiration of all: People.
People Are My Drug is a radical album, in every sense of the word. In 2018 choosing community and positivity and music is radical. Cook’s smile is still as infectious and ernest as it’s ever been. However, he presently appears charged with a newly-minted seriousness that is revealed to listeners in solidarity, that he too is fighting like hell to keep love alive.

Raucous, rowdy, gentle, sweet, eccentric, quirky, and outright irreverent are all words that fittingly describe Tas Cru’s songs and testify to his reputation as a one of the most unique of bluesmen plying his trade today. It’s not for nothing that Cru has received wide praise for his songwriting. As Downbeat magazine noted, “His songs are blues poetry – crafted with rare verbal flair and his ability to cast a memorable hook is magical!” Live, these songs are performed with power and passion as observed by Living Blues magazine, “The vivacity and sheer joy with which Cru plays is intoxicating!”
Tas Cru is based out of upstate New York and performs in multiple formats ranging from solo acoustic to a 7 piece-backing band. He sings and plays a wide variety of guitars – at home on either electric, acoustic, resonator or cigar box. Tas is a Delaney Guitars (Austin TX) endorsed artist.
In his early bands, Tas was introduced to the great Sun Records sound and the country blues that later served as a counterpoint to the rock-blues he idolized as did so many young aspiring guitar players of his time. Cru grew up in a very musical and generally unquirky family (except for him). Unlike his talented brother and sisters, he did not pursue music in school. A brief attempt to play the trombone abruptly ended after being kicked by his 7th grade music teacher who’s name actually was A (alden) Sharpe! Tas says he deserved it. Instead Cru explored and developed his talent by taking up with a rougher crowd of older, self-taught musicians where he was introduced to the songs of the Sun Records legends. His first foray into the blues came after leaving the US Navy when he was asked to join a band formed by a former shipmate named Delray Streeter, an Arkansas-raised bluesman with boundless bravado and attitude but rather limited singing and even lesser harmonica skills. This partnership, though short-lived, proved to be very influential as Streeter’s repertoire tended toward the older, rough-hewn country blues. Cru’s schooling in country blues later served him well and is heard in his original songs along with the Sun Records and, of course his rock-blues influences.
His latest album, Memphis Song completes a trifecta of Tas Cru’s creativity that began with his breakthrough effort, You Keep the Money (2014) and followed by the award-winning Simmered and Stewed. Released this June,Memphis Song showcases Cru’s talents as an acclaimed songwriter, guitarist and vocalist. This album’s title track features long time friend Victor Wainwright on piano along with Victor’s guitar player, Pat Harrington putting down some soulful slide work.
You Keep the Money grabbed the attention of blues radio worldwide, debuting on the prestigious Living Blues Radio Chart at #2 and, quite noteworthy, debuting #1 on the Roots Music Report Blues Radio Chart. Simmered & Stewed alsoenjoyed wide airplay including being featured as a BB King’s Bluesville “Pick to Click” on SiriusXM radio. Likewise it made its way on to the highly regarded Living Blues Chart and resided at or near the top of the Roots Music Report’s Blues Chart for most of 2017. Simmered and Stewed earned Cru consideration for several prestigious awards (Syracuse Area Music Awards – best blues album / Independent Blues Awards – best contemporary artist, best song Grizzle n’ Bone, best band /International Blues Foundation Blues Music Awards – best emerging artist). On the strength of these two albums Tas has since performed at several major blues festivals and notable venues and now is bringing Memphis Song to these stages in 2018.
In addition to his best-known albums is Tas’ 2009 release, Even Bugs Sing the Blues, an album of original blues music for kids based on book characters from the works of acclaimed author-illustrator, Eric Carle. In 2016 he recorded a blues album for dog lovers called Doggone Blues. As a Blues Foundation, Keeping the Blues Alive award recipient, besides performing, Cru brings his award-winning Blues Education programs and workshops to festivals, schools, and hospitals everywhere he travels.

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

This beautiful exhibit celebrates the works of photographer Lauren Rutten and quilter Kari Morton. What these two artists share in common are a partnership in the five-woman, artist-owned Flow Gallery in historic downtown Marshall, and a deep love of Madison County, their newly chosen home.
In 2015, Lauren and her husband Andy, traveled the US for one year searching for a home. “From the very moment I arrived in Marshall while on this journey, I had a sense of having dreamt of this place since childhood – I knew this was where I wanted to be.
I have found that my life here is not confined within four walls, so I’m very interested in reflections, when the light shines through a structure, or a barn begins to dilapidate so the outside and inside merge.
Marshall finds itself in a season of change. Many families who are moving here to homestead live alongside families who have farmed here for generations. This collection hopes to show the range of those who have come to call Marshall home, as well as the hard reality of homesteading and its immense beauty, which are in direct relationship with each other here. In this land I dig my hands in the earth and muddy my feet on the ground, while at the same time experiencing the transcendence of being and connecting to so much beyond my body. I hope those who view these photos might experience this too.”
Kari and her husband, Mike, moved to Madison County in 2012, after having lived a fairly nomadic life. They decided Madison County was the place to put down roots and call home.
“This collection is inspired by my immediate world, the things I live with and the things I see – the garden in my front yard, the chickens in the back yard, the buildings in downtown Marshall, where I spend many hours working at Flow and serving as a guardian ad litem in the county courthouse. Each of my pieces tell a story of connection, to my community, to my world. I love sharing this part of myself with others.”
Flow Gallery is located on Main Street in the historic, picturesque town of Marshall, which lies along the French Broad River, just 25 minutes north of Asheville, NC. The gallery is in its 8th year of business and showcases the work of over 65 talented, regional artists.

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.
In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
Don’t forget to join us tomorrow morning for Toddler Time from 10am – 11:30 am! This program is open to kids ages 6 and under.
