Growing up in the mountains of Southwest Virginia the son of a musician, Chris has been around music his whole life. Picking up his first guitar at the age of twelve, he became a young musician that has played in several bands and groups including Stonewall Grey, a regional band that he formed with his father Melvin in the late 90’s.
After taking several years off from music to pursue his education, Chris has returned to music as a singer songwriter performing regionally for the past year. With strong influences from his Heartland Rock roots with artists such as Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, and John Mellencamp, he enjoys writing about life with a little twist of history to it.
Coming from a region that is deeply rooted in coal mining and farming, Chris loves telling the stories of people we see every day that go untold. Passionately painting a picture in your mind, he will make you identify and feel the struggles and triumphs of life, love, loss and war like no other.

Featuring Singer-Songwriters:
Spalding McIntosh
A songwriter from Brevard NC. He has been described by some as “smooth and powerful folk” but thinks of himself primarily as a songwriter whose genre knows no bounds. “I just write from the heart and sometimes it comes out rootsy, sometimes country, heck I’m not above writing a pop song! As long as I can get it out I’m happy.”

Nathan Robinson
grew up in the northeast going on trips with his truck driving father, he learned life on the road from an early age. He and his family moved to NC at 15 and picked up on the southern culture after some awkward teen years and after his time in the Marine Corps, he returned to Asheville with a new found freedom. He began to write lyrics and realized he could sing and began to street perform. He fell in love with the art and packed up his car for livability and traveled around the country playing on street corners, small-town bars and alleyways with foot traffic and echoes. He writes about his travels and the experiences that come with it. He sings and plays with a slow soulful draw you can hear a block away.

A timely restaging of We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite, a seminal recording from the civil rights era. The piece will be performed by the NYC / Philadelphia-based ensemble Fresh Cut Orchestra with vocalist Melanie Charles. Recorded in the fall of 1960, the Freedom Now Suite was the most openly political jazz recording ever made, combining musical prowess with political dialogue. Nearly 60 years later, the issues posed by We Insist! are still relevant to our current political moment.
Presented as a part of Come Hear North Carolina, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Natural & Cultural Resources and the North Carolina Arts Council. Additional support provided by UNC Asheville.

Chicago Don hosts the AGB Stage for our Big City Blues Jam. Come sign up to play!
Chicago, Detroit, New York. Bright lights. Big city. Get mesmerized in the sound of Big City Blues. Clear, sharp melodies on horns and harps contrast the deep, rich back beats of the electric bass. Keyboard riffs battle electric guitars that are on fire, and classic blues drum beats drive home the groove. Lose yourself in a night of soulful music reminiscent of Freddie King, Charlie Robison, Billie Holiday, Luther Allison in the smoke filled dance halls of the past.

Music by Tom Snow; Lyrics by Dean Pitchford; Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie
A musical version of the 1984 film! When teenager Ren McCormack moves from Chicago to a small town, he isn’t prepared for the stifling local laws, including a ban on dancing and rock music instituted by the local preacher. As he struggles to fit in, he encourages his classmates to defy the local pastor and call for a rock’n’roll prom. Fist pump!
“Footloose” combines songs from the hit 1984 soundtrack with dynamic new songs – and though it might seem like just a lot of fun, it also celebrates the wisdom of opening minds and listening to the voices of young people. Director Jerry Crouch, music director Lynda Ferrell Shuler, and choreographer Tina Pisano-Foor have put together an incredible cast of students and adults from our community to bring “Footloose” to life!

From the moment he enters a room, it becomes clear that Jay Allen is here to tell his story. The tattoo-clad singer/songwriter has his heart inked on his sleeve, so to speak, and sings with conviction onstage that stems from the lessons his parents taught him and the music he heard around the house. Knowing the stage was the only place he wanted to be, and so Jay packed his bags and moved to Nashville. Working day and night, Jay has achieved major milestones in the course of the past few years: he’s signed a publishing and development deal with Sony/ATV publishing, enlisted management team Edge Artist Management and released a five-song EP, which produced his first hit single Sounds Good To Me dubbed a Highway Find on SiriusXM’s The Highway. The budding musician continued to perform and write, honing his craft with the likes of ACM-nominated songwriter Phil Barton and Lindsay Rimes, both credited as co-writers on his debut single. Born and raised in rural Iowa, Jay discovered his love of performing one Sunday amidst the congregation of his church, Jay initially attempted singing harmonies with the ladies, much to the chagrin of his pastor. Proving his chops, he was invited to sing solo the following Sunday and thus, a passion was born: “There’s nothing like being on the stage. When the lights come up and the band starts playing and I get behind that mic , I’m alive. To spending every day writing, then see your songs come to life on a record, then see people laughing and dancing along, it’s heaven on earth.”

ON-SITE FOOD TRUCK: The Purple People Feeder ______________________________________________________
Hailing from Kentucky with a sound as unique and smooth as the state’s beloved bourbon, C2 & The Brothers Reed’s authenticity shines – in their music, and on stage.
Forming in 2013, the brothers hit the road to spread their sound and haven’t looked back. After the independent release of their first EP Hot Mess, along with an extensive tour schedule, they took to the studio less than a year later to cut their newest record Weigh Station Tour.
Split into sides, ‘Exit A’ and ‘Exit B’, Weigh Station Tour explores gritty rock and roll while referencing 60’s and 70’s era soul music, embracing a style that is nearly forgotten in the surge of modern sounds and technology.

“Sawdust and Tinsel” (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1953). Bergman presents the battle of the sexes as a ramshackle, grotesque carnival. The story of the charged relationship between a turn-of-the-century traveling circus owner (Ake Grönberg) and his performer girlfriend (Harriet Andersson), the film features dreamlike detours and twisted psychosexual power plays that presage the director’s Smiles of a Summer Night and The Seventh Seal, works that would soon change the landscape of art cinema forever. Doors open at 7:30 / Film begins at 8:00 pm. Come on in, get comfortable, have some refreshments and enjoy great films from around the world every Friday! Open donation.
Hustle Souls takes the stage at Sanctuary Brewing Company Friday, February 22nd, 2019! DONT MISS THIS!
About:
Once upon a time in the budding music-mecca of Asheville, NC, a man with a trumpet, an acoustic guitar and a mission metamorphosed into the synergistic soul/indie-pop band, Hustle Souls. With 2 ½ years of touring under their belt, the band’s feel-good, modern meets vintage sound, have earned them a reputation as one of the region’s most promising independent acts.
Lead singer and keyboardist, Billy Litz’s rootsy influences and vulnerable compositions are embroidered, garnished, and decked out by a powerhouse soul band. The rhythm section, Tommy Moore and Sean McCann aggressively usher in a tight jazz and R&B influence, while guitarist, Chris Everett, brings the group to the next level with his rock-ribbed feel.
In 2017 the band was approached by gold and platinum mixer and producer Eric “Mixerman” Sarafin (Ben Harper, the Broadcast, Pharcyde) about making a record which has set the ball rolling at a different pace. Hustle Souls’ eclectic sound will soon come together on their debut full-length album, “Color.”
