Veteran’s Day Virtual Celebration
Nov 11 @ 11:00 am – 11:45 am
Online

Veterans Day - A Virtual Ceremony

One thing that remains solid during this time of rapid change is the gratitude we, as Americans, feel toward those that defend our freedom. What started as a day to honor the end of World War I is now a national day of recognition during which Americans reflect on the monumental sacrifices made by our service members.

Join us as we honor our Veterans in a Virtual Veterans Day Ceremony-taking place on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. on the Asheville City YouTube channel. This year’s keynote speaker, 100-year-old Dr. PJ Moore, will share his stories and reflect on his time as a surgeon in WWII. Other speakers will be Stephanie Young, Director of the Charles George VA. Also, there will be three readings from Veterans from Vietnam and Iraq who are part of a Veterans writing group, Brothers and  Sisters Like These.

Honor Our Veterans: click here to watch the ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.

Spread the Word: Are you hoping to do more to honor our Veterans this year? Share information about this event by posting this flyer on social media or emailing it to your friends, encouraging them to tune in with you.

The City of Asheville Mayor’s Committee for Veterans’ Affairs invites everyone to join us online for a virtual Veterans Day Ceremony, to be streamed live on the City’s YouTube channel
at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 from Council Chambers, Asheville City Hall.
While City Hall is open in a limited capacity to provide service to our residents, this ceremony will be virtual for safety reasons, to help avoid the transmission of COVID-19.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. P.J. Moore, who served as a WWII Army surgeon. A proclamation by Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer acknowledging him for his service to the community will be presented during the ceremony.
U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Ric Ledford will sing the National Anthem. U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran Ted Minnick will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Charles George VA Medical Center Director Stephanie Young will be a presenter.
The ceremony will feature readings from “Brothers and Sisters Like These” by Stacie Litsenberger, U.S. Army, Iraq; Pete Ramsey, U.S. Army, Vietnam; and Tommy Cannon, U.S. Army, Iraq.

About the keynote speaker
Dr. P.J. Moore was drafted into the Army 1943 and served as a surgeon at Lawson Army Hospital outside of Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Moore operated on soldiers who had lost their limbs. He also taught golf to his patients as a way to help them through their long road to recovery.
Dr. Moore continued his medical career in civilian life for the next 70 years after his military service. He retired as the oldest active surgeon in North Carolina at the age of 96 in 2016. Dr. Moore delivered more than 10,000 babies and performed more than 30,000 surgeries throughout his career. In 2011, Gov. Beverly Perdue recognized Dr. Moore with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for his exemplary service to the community for going above and beyond the call of duty and making a significant impact in strengthening Western North Carolina for more than 50 years.

Asheville Holiday Parade Canceled for 2020
Nov 14 all-day
Asheville NC

The decision to cancel the parade was based on North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s September 30th announcement moving North Carolina into Phase 3. Phase 3 continues to limit outdoor gatherings to 50 people and provides capacity limits for outdoor spaces. The uncertainty of COVID-19 conditions and public safety protocols in effect at the time of the parade drove the decision.

There are thousands of people in the parade and as many as 20,000 have come to watch in previous years, so it’s just not responsible to move forward in the midst of a public health crisis.

The Asheville Downtown Association took over production of the Asheville Holiday Parade in 2008. The parade first marched, danced and rolled through downtown Asheville in 1946, meaning 2020 would have marked the 74th annual parade.

The Asheville Downtown Association is planning to host free photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday, November 21 at Rabbit Rabbit in downtown Asheville. Families will register for a time slot to maintain social distancing, and children and families will also remain distanced from Santa and Mrs. Claus for photos.

The Asheville Downtown Association will also continue to host its annual Downtown Holiday Windows Contest. More information on both of the above opportunities to come.
