12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition At The Haen Gallery
Nov 16 @ 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The Haen Gallery

The Haen Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, is proud to present their 12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition. The exhibit will run through November.

Lynn Boggess is one of the most unique and noteworthy American landscape painters of the 21st Century. He resides in West Virginia, a state whose diverse mountains, forests, and rivers provide abundant inspiration for the artist’s plein air paintings. In place of brushes he uses palette knives and trowels to thickly layer the broad sweeping strokes and exquisite fine detail that capture all the colors of the seasons in rushing rivers, snow covered hillsides, and thick forest vegetation. Mr. Boggess’ work is recognized internationally for its incredible three-dimensional texture, rendered solely in oils. These remarkable paintings combine elements of Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism to create a style that is totally unique and original.

The Haen Gallery in Asheville is located at 52 Biltmore Avenue between City Bakery and Chestnut. There is a parking garage at the Aloft hotel across the street, another garage just up the hill, as well as street parking.

The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 12-5pm. For more information: 828-254-8577 or www.thehaengallery.com. Gallery contacts: Chris Foley, Director; Leslie Logemann, Gallery Manager.

With locations in Asheville and Brevard, The Haen Gallery offers the work of established artists whose distinctive and unique style sets it apart from ordinary and imitative efforts. Visit the website at thehaengallery.com.

This is no conspiracy theory! Deep State Baltic Porter will now be released on November 16th in all 4 Catawba Tasting Rooms and will be available in 5-state distribution!

Deep State Baltic Porter represents the more sessionable end of the ABV range for the style at 7.2 percent. This, combined with its smooth bottom-fermented lager character, makes it a dangerously drinkable dark beer. Deep mahogany in color, it showcases the full-flavored complexity of the style, leading with rich malt, toffee, and dark fruits (raisin, plum, fig).

Clay Harmon: Al Dente opening reception
Nov 16 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Pink Dog Creative

There is a magic point when cooking pasta when it is perfectly done – soft and slightly chewy. Supposedly, throwing a piece of spaghetti against the wall to see if it sticks is a method to determine if pasta has reached this state of perfection: if it sticks, it is ready. The organizing conceit of this exhibit is the same: I am going to throw some projects on the wall to see if they stick. First is the Telos project, which is a dark minimalist take on commuting—driving through the dark toward an uncertain destination. The Curve project is a set of extractions from architectural subjects taken over several trips to Europe that share a common visual sensibility. And the Detritus project documents a strange visual conversation with anonymous commuters who eat in their cars and then leave the evidence ready to be pondered.

Exhibit runs November 16–December 30, 2018.

Science Pub: A Toast To the Scientists of Black Mountain College
Nov 16 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
Asheville Museum of Science

Open only 23 years, from 1933 to 1956, Black Mountain College has become famous for the many artists who were faculty or students at the college. These individuals have had a profound influence on modern and contemporary art. Recently there have been national and international exhibitions dedicated to the influence and legacy of BMC. There is now an extensive collection of literature on the college. Most of this work has focused on the arts and artists from BMC. However, BMC was not just an art school. It was a liberal arts college based on John Dewey’s theories of education. There was a full spectrum of liberal arts classes, including classes in the sciences such as mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology. The college always had at least a few science faculty. Just as BMC was able to attract many great artists because of WWII, they were also able to attract some amazing science faculty. For a small undergraduate college tucked back in the southern Appalachian Mountains, the list of distinguished science faculty is surprising. This talk will give a brief overview of a few of the notable individuals who taught in the sciences at BMC.

Bio: David Peifer is a professor of mathematics at UNCA. His mathematical research is on symmetries and structures of shapes in dimensions four and less, or technically what is known as low dimensional topology and infinite group theory. David became interested in the history and legacy of Black Mountain College after discovering that the great German mathematician Max Dehn taught at the college from 1945 until he passed away in 1952. In the early 1900’s, Dehn did foundational work in topology and infinite group theory. Over the past decade, David has published several articles and given presentations about the history of Max Dehn and the arts and sciences at BMC. Recently, David has given joint talks with NYC artist Dorothea Rockburne, at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art and at the Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia. David has been a board member at the BMC Museum and Art Center, in Asheville, for the past nine years.
